Get ready for awesome tangles . The pancakes wander all over . I have two 13 # pancakes that haven't been wet in three years . I used then for one season and hated them . there is less blow back . but the wander , especially in cross currents cured me . Back to 12 and 15 # finned weights for me.

Anybobody got a handle on what the cut bait supply will be like on the south/east shore of LO this year. Is Familiar Bite still making the herring ?

I am trying to put rings on some of my flashers that use snaps . Most of my better flashers have welded solid rings . Any one out there know where I can buy the rings ? I have access to gas or electric welders so that is no problem . But I can't find the rings anyplace . Thanks for any help .

New Proposed Law Will Cripple Boating and Fishing in NY

Courtesy and common sense are a big part of navigation, I agree . The problems that i have encountered on the water show a complete lack of knowledge of the "rules of the road ' . Basic navigation skills are taught in the boater's safety course and I maintain it should be a requirement for EVERYONE who operates a boat ANYWHERE . -
New Proposed Law Will Cripple Boating and Fishing in NY

Passing port to port is the preferred way to pass when meeting head on in inland waters . It is NOT a rule . Boats meeting head on , neither boat is the "stand on " boat both captains must give way . I took the boater safety course years ago with my son . If memory serves me , it was a six or seven week course of three hours once a week . so it is not just a one day money grab . The things I learned have served me well over the years . -
New Proposed Law Will Cripple Boating and Fishing in NY

After seeing some of the antics on lake Ontario and other water ways in NY , I am 1000% behind this bill . I have had the certificate for years ,as has my son . We test drivers of other motorized vehicles , why should boats be any different ? There are many folks on our waterways that have absolutely no clue what they are doing and it puts all of us at risk. -

What’s the deal with The new Rhys Davis/Familiar Bite strips
chinook35 replied to Patriot's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I haven't had a chance to try the new Familiar Bite / Rhys davis herring strips yet , I have some in my freezer , just need to find the time to get out . The old RD strips could be used and refrozen , I have used the same strip several times on different trips . I wasn't too concered with food poisoning , the smell alone stopped me from ever tasting them. I hope the new cut bait is as good as the old RD . It looks and smells like the old stuff , if it stands up to trolling I think we are back in the meat business. -

I know for a fact that they will be available . I will let the owner of the company announce when and where . I have seen them and they look great can't wait to try them . I'll post when I have a report. -

chinook35 replied to chinook35's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Mark, That is the best news I have heard in a long time. Keep us informed about the availability of the herring strips. If you can PM me about availability ,I will order a case as soon as you let me know that I can. Thanks. Mark -
Cut Bait ??
chinook35 replied to chinook35's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Anyone know if the FISH ON Bait Co. is still in business ? I tried to find their website but it appears to be gone . I still have some of their salted herring strips left, but I have had limited success with this product . I really wish Rhys Davis would come back. -
Time for the annual question . Any body know if and where cut bait is available on the East and South shore of LO ?

Stony Creek

You must be the Lund . I went out at the same time you did . We caught a six # laker right off the bat . Then we had a lull till we got down to Lakeview and found warmer water . We ended up with 4 lakers and 4 browns boated and we had a lot of hit and miss . Very cold ,I thought my hands were going to fall off . Glad we didn't have to enter that 40 degree water . All came on Rapalas , gold with orange belly was the hot ticket. -
I have used the SNT since they first came out . Had issues with the early version but Cannon replaced a defective probe and antenna with no hassles . I find the depth feature very usefull and have checked it against my sonar and rigger counter and find it to be spot on for accuracy . Easy to check , put boat in neutral over deep water , lower prode to any depth and check all readings , SNT , sonar and rigger counter . As far as losing signal at depth , try wrapping a wet hand towel around your rigger boom and SNT antenna , Cannon can't answer why it works , but it does . When mine dies , I will replace it with the new model .

I am so sorry to hear of Duanes passing. I never met him in person , but had the pleasure of many IM 's . A couple of years ago when cut bait was hard to come by on the Eastern Shore of LO , Duane sent me a dozen packs of Fish On salted cut bait and never asked for or would take a cent in payment. This man was a class act and I am truly sorry I never got to meet him in person. My sincerest condolences go out to his family . RIP ,Duane.

Just got a PM on the LOU website from m_ab asking for help in Sierra Leone. The name she uses is marriam abdullah , I guess she thought this is a phishing website , not a fishing site. LOL. Anyone else getting these PM's ?

This is good news. I have been advocating this move for years. There are people on our lakes who should not even be operating a rowboat, let alone a power craft capable of high speeds. You can't make people follow the rules if they don't want or care to, but at least they will know what the rules are . And that port is not just a wine. And bow is not something to shoot arrows. This measure should make boating more enjoyable and safer for us all.

I just saw a trailer on tv for a National Geographic Channel documentary on the Asian Carp (Flying Carp) which is going to air on Sunday , July 18th , at 10:00 PM EDT . The preview showed people standing in the bow of a boat catching these critters with landing nets as they jumped. Looked like a good way to break an arm or fall overboard if one of these brutes hits you. Maybe we can get a handle on what these fish are all about. Looks like their entry into the great lakes is inevitable .
