I have a question. Does an inflatable friend have to wear a pfd ?

I fished off the haystack on Sat. 8/15 . We managed a small laker first thing ( about 7 AM ) then nothing for 3 hours. Marked very few fish . Finally hooked up about 10 and landed a 29 # king . We were headed deeper and had the hit in 150 FOW . 1 more knock off with no one home and that was it for the day. Quit at 2 PM . Looks like the charters were targeting lakers . Talked to a guy from PA at the launch who told me he had his best day ever on lakers. Ho Hum, he can have the oil cans . But I guess if thats all that will cooperate then it's better than nothing. Kings are few and far between . I don't know what is up .

It will make it much easier for the coasties to find your frozen corpse.

All the reports I have seen say that the towel trick works on all riggers. FYI , Cannon has discontinued the Speed N Temp so the price you are paying is for a discontinued unit.

Hi, I have used the uni trolls for years and i have experienced what you are referring to. You will have to remove the square (early model) or rectangular (late) cover on the opposite side of the rigger from the handle. Then back off handle to remove from the shaft , don't loose the ball bearings and washers and the cone shaped spring ( the grooves in the washers are supposed to be there) . You can the pull the shaft out from the cover side. The drag washer ( composite ) is between two metal washers, one has the grooves for the dogs the other is smooth on the circumference. Check these washers for any damage, if they show wear or grooving you will have to replace them. The drag washers will need replacing for sure (one per rigger).I have always ordered my parts from Cat. Gary's but there are other Cannon parts dealers out there. If you call them I am sure they can fix you up if you describe the parts you need. Don't forget to grease the bearings under the handle when you put it back together. Hope this helps.

There are many variables that determine how much cable is required to reach actual depth. I have seen times that i needed 160 ft of cable to reach 110 ft of depth. You may have been in a serious current. What was your boat speed compared to your down speed ? The larger the flasher you use , the more drag on the cable and more blow back .An 11 " flasher pulls much harder than an 8 " . There are times when you must use an 11-13 " flasher , and you just have to put up with more blow back. Your tangling problems ,and we've all had more tangles than we care to remember, may be due to your weight. Try using a different weight, yours may be wandering all over down there. I used 13# pancake weights for a while to minimize blowbacks and had amazing tangles. It turns out the weights were wandering back and forth many feet. Sometimes due to strong side currents acting on the large surfaces. I went back to balls with fins and my troubles decreased . What kind of set back are you running (distance from release to lure) ? The longer the set back the more chance of tangling in a current or turn. I have experimented for a lot of years and found that there is no hard and fast rule for the amount of cable needed to reach a certain depth. An uncoated cable with an 11" flasher seems to need an additional 15 % let out to reach target depth (with no down currents), that is ,to reach 100' of depth try letting out 115' of cable. lastly don't rely on sonar to give you the depth of your lure . It is merely telling you how far from the transducer your st up is . If your sonar shows your ball at 100' , it only means that it is 100' from the ducer , actual depth may only be 80'. Hope this helps a little , knowing you are not the only one dealing with all the variables.

I have owned SNT's since they first came out (for better or worse). Try this trick, wet a towel and wrap it around the rigger boom and the spring antenna . Cannon cannot explain why this works but it does. I need to re-wet mine every 30 minutes or so.

Leader length depends on what you are using . Some cut bait rigs go 60- 72" from flasher to rig. I would say that flies should run a shorter leader. The flasher gives action to the presentation, the shorter the leader the faster the action.

If you look on the chart it is called "drowned island" . If you fish inside the green can , be careful, there are some seriously shallow spots between it and shore.

I have a 1992 Mercruiser 3.0 L with Delco EST ignition. My question is : can I use an automotive module or do I have to buy the Mercruiser module? There is a huge difference in price. I can see no external difference in the two modules (auto vs Mercruiser) but the timing advance is determined by the module and I don't want any problems .

Has anyone had the chance to use the new cut bait ? If so , how does it perform ?

The gentleman that took the boater safety course should know that there is NO right of way. There is a "stand on boat" that is required to maintain the course they are on if safe. That would be the boat being overtaken. The "give way" boat must alter course to safely pass the stand on boat, either in a crossing or overtaking situation. The give way boat in this instance is the overtaking boat which must alter course and speed to safely pass to port or starboard. This right of way idea is where the trouble starts. All boats must do everything in their power to avoid collisions(and confrontations).

I find that 1# lead balls are a good choice in these situations, if it's dark so much the better. They can't tell where it came from.

Chinook, Thanks for the reply and update. I am trying to keep my optimism concerning this product . I hope it will be available . I still can't believe Rhys Davis has not come up with a way to preserve their cut bait in order to meet the DEC guidelines. Any DEAD fish can be used if it is brined and not just frozen.

Chinook, I tried to order a case of A grade strips from Jason at Fish On. First I was told that the cost of overnight shipping was prohibitive. When I told him that the cost was not a concern , he told me that they would only ship to dealers. Could I ask how you were able to get a case shipped to you? I am still interested in purchasing the cut bait, but I seem to be getting the run around.

Cannon has stopped making the SNT. When ours die or go to visit Davie Jones , we will have to find a differnt brand to sacrifice to the fish gods .

I've been running the SNT and Roemer together for at least 5 years and never had a problem. I always thought the wimpy 135# cable that Cannon supplied was a weak point. The second year of owning the SNT I bought a spool of 150# Mason coated cable from Stamina and have breathed a little easier ever since. I reterminate every year at the start of the salmon fishing season and scrape off a new spot for the contact point of the probe, I also crimp on a ring connector (electrical) for the safety wire so it can't just slide off the cable if I loose a ball. Been running 12 - 13 # weights exclusively .There must have been a crimp in the cable and you just happened to put your Roemer over it. I guess none of us have to worry about replacing a SNT probe. The SNT has gone the way of the dinosaur.

Any reports on availability of cut bait on Lake O ? I see a company on Lake M making claims they will have it available this year ,but I'll belive it when I see it.

There is a proposal to raise license fees in NY. Resident fishing will be $29, non resident fishing will be $70. According to NY outdoor news the salmon/trout stamp is a dead issue. But the license increases make up for it and then some.

I found a petition on another website to ask the DEC for a three rod per person limit on LO. It was (according to the other website) started by longline on LOU. I have been unable to find the link on this site. I think the webmaster should move it to a permanent location on the South Shore site so everyone can get onboard this movement. This is legislation that is long overdue.

I am surprised that BPS or any retailer would replace a reel that has been in service for 7 months. The warranty is from the manufacturer and not the retailer. Your course of action should have been to contact the manufacturer and get a return authorization to have a defective reel repaired/replaced. I think that it speaks well of BPS that they replaced this reel.
