  1. The Steelhead will be arriving today and noon. There are still alot of unscheduled feeding times available. If interested in scheduling a feeding time please contact Bob Holden at [email protected] Thanks to all those who have volunteered their time for feedings.
  2. For those trailering, the docks at the state launch, have not been put in as of Sunday 4/22. Saturday did very well on the Browns. Many doubles and finished the day with a triple with a #12 Brown. For me the fish were moving in a large pocket of very stained water traveling East. Stayed in the colored water and pulled fish all morning. Mostly board action 70 to 100 feet back. Jr's in Blk/Sil, Blk/Gld and Gr Riggers firing also 4 feet down. Sunday was a little slower for me. Water cleared and the fishing was a one here one there pick until I found a pocket of fish East of the creek. Same lures and depth as Saturday. Did pick a couple in 15-20 feet of water off boards. Riggers were silent. All Browns again. Managed to put together a decent catch.
  3. Ray, Capt. Bob Songin of "Reel Excitement Charters" is giving the seminar at Gander Mn't. It will be held this Friday 4/20 at 7pm with no charge to the public. Bob fishes the "West End" each Spring and then moves to Oak Orchard for the remainder of the year. Being a West ender you probably already know all this. Did you ever find a LOU snowbrush!!!!!!!!!
  4. The DEC has informed us that they will not be deliverying the Steelhead for pen-rearing today as planned. The weather has postponed the delivery until 12 noon on Monday 4/23. It is still planned to keep the Steelhead for the complete 3 weeks if creek temperature conditions permit.
  5. At the LOTSA Seminar, last Thursday it was mentioned that there is still a lot of ice on Erie. They also mentioned that the ice boom has been lifted so the ice should be moving down river. Conditions should be improving as the end of the month approaches. They still caution anyone planning on going out an fishing the bar, if the wind ice right ice can backup into your port and cause a problem when trying to return. Not so much the ice but the debris that collects along with it. Sorry there is not better conditions to report.
  6. In The Box, will do. Do you fish the Pro-AM's?
  7. Just a quick report on the LOTSA Seminar last night given by Capt. Mike Johannes. Topics covered: Current and wind effect on fish staging, effect of river water ploom, start of day depth of water, lure selection, lure set settup, lure size and colors. Mike fishes out of Wilson. His boat's name is On The Rocks. He mentioned that he monitors Channel 19 and does not mind if he is contacted on the water. He seemed to be very willing to share information. See you all at the West end!
  8. In the Box, thanks for your reply. I will be up your way fishing the Oswego and Sodus Pro-Am's. I have been fishing with Team Rebel for a number of years and we really enjoy fishing in your area. Good fishing!
  9. Skunked, they both have their +'s and -'s. I have a 26' Penn Yan and use large bags. I have found that if set up right the bags will travel away from the boat and not cause ware. Speed is controlled by setting rpm's and then pulling one or both bags depending on wave action and direction of troll. Most plates have the drawback to the effect that they allow for one position, raised or lowered, and must be raised before running at increased rpm's or take the chance of bending the plate. Most plates require drilling into a cavitation plate to be secured. Check outboard manufacturer's warranty. One more thing with the plates, when in the down position be aware of ensuring that you have free flowing exhaust. If restricted you may cause higher operating temoerature in your drive unit. Some have a large hole in the center of the plate to eliminate this concern. As in anything, it all comes down to personal preference. Both are good in controlling speed in combination with throttle adjustment. Hope this is helpful to you.
  10. Hank, thanks for the reply. I was not sure how this simplified solution would be received. Good Luck on the water. In The Box, are you from PA? I had a buddy who chartered out of Oak Orchard ( Blue Ribbon Charters ) who's dock mate was also In The Box.
  11. In the Box, a simple solution to your question is, if you have access to shore power, is to place a work light in your motor box area. A simple 100w light bulb will generate enough heat to keep the compartment warm enough to keep your engine from freezing. Of course you will have to turn it on. Not being smart.......... I also have an I/O and my engine is below deck I hang the work light clear from any contact with motor parts etc. I also cover the hatch. Of course, if the air temperature is forcast to fall ridiculously low you may have to take additional precautions. I am sure this will generate some interesting responses but this does work.
  12. The hatchery truck will arrive at Sandy Creek Marina at 12:30pm on Monday 4/16. The fish will be piped into the pens directly from the truck. The pens will then be moved to the main creek where they will remain until the released date of approx. May 7th. For those unfamiliar with the marina location: It is on Rt.19 just 1/4 mile South of the intersection of Rt.19 and the Parkway. This will put you on the West side of Sandy Creek. All are welcome. Bring the kids they will have fun!!!
  13. Just a reminder that there will be a volunteer meeting Satuday 3/24 at 4:30pm at the hamlin Town Hall. Please bring your calendar as feeding dates will be assigned at this meeting. Before the meeting, the group will be getting together at Sandy Creek Marine to move the pens from storage to the marina and to put the netting on the pen frame. This is and open invitation for anyone wishing to participate. Timeframe is approximately 9:30am. The DEC has not given a solid date for fish arrival, however, we are using April 13th thru May 5th as the active dates for this year's project. We will adjust when a firm arrival date is given. Anyone wishing to be scheduled for a feeding and can not make the meeting can contact Bob Holden at [email protected] with your available dates and times. Thanks

  15. Sandy Creek opened yesterday but the docks will not go in for a while. A lot of chunk ice and large debris is flowing down the creek at this time. Would not attempt a launch.
  16. Tom, sorry, I will check the numbers again and post a reply tonight. Claude is the guy that comes to your home. I will also post the pen-rearing information as I receive it.
  17. Tom, have you contacted Bob Fredericks of Rochester Seat Covers. 19. The Sandy Creek Pen-rearing Volunteer meeting has been rescheduled for March 24th at 4:30pm at the Hamlin Town Hall. Please bring your calendars as pen assembly, pen placing and feeding schedules will be set up. As of this date we will be receiving 7350 Steelhead which will be divided into two pens. The date for fish delivery has not been established but should be known by the meeting date. Bob Holden will be chairing this meeting. Thanks Capt. Pat Pullinzi - Treasurer
  20. PMJ, do not hesitate to run a small J-Plug behind a cow-bell rig for your lake trout. This combo works really well when run along the bottom. Run it slow 1.0 to 1.5 mph. As far as Spring goes, you can run the small J-Plug off your boards and riggers. Run them back 100 to 135 off your boards and a litltle closer off the riggers. Color choice is dependent on water clearity. The larger size J-plugs can be included starting in Aug./Sept. timeframe for Kings and Bows. Capt. Pat Pullinzi
  21. Off The Hook The Sandy Creek Pen-rearing project has taped into a great resource for volunteers. The local Boy Scout troops have been a reliable and energetic segment of our volunteers. The Scouts use our project for a number of merit badges which include Community Service, Enviromental Service and Fisheries. You may want to contact your local troops to see if they would be interested in helping out. We have also contacted a couple of high school science class teachers and their response has been positive. They will be involved again this year. Good Luck Capt. Pat Pullinzi Treasurer Sandy Creek Pen-rearing Project

  24. Muskybob, the pens will be located in the creek proper, just South of the channel leading into Sandy Creek Marina. You can access the pens by taking the driveway just South of the Marina road enterence on Rt#19 and taking the driveway all the way to the last house ( #8 ). Just walk along the house to the creek, the pens will be there. I live at #16 which is two houses up the creek. My boat, Persistence, will be docked in front. The marina operator, Bruce Butcher, should be around, but if not someone will be there to feed the fish every two hours from 8am until 6pm. Stop by. I will post when we receive the Steelhead. Thanks for the inquiry. Pat
  25. The Sandy Creek Pren-rearing Project will be pen-rearing approximately 7500 Steelhead in 2007. In the past we have pen-reared Chinooks, however, due to the water temperature spikes we experience, we have backed off pen-rearing Chinooks. The feeling was that we did not want to put 50,000 Chinooks at risk. The Steelhead seem to do better and we are pleased with the product we are releasing into the fishery. The option is there for us to add Chinooks again but we feel the Steelhead option is our best course. Sandy receives 100,000 direct stock Chinooks, which in the past were split between Altmar and Caladonia. Due to the recent VHS concern the Chinooks will come from Altmar only. Sandy also receives 15,000 Steelhead which we split into pen-rearing and direct stocking. In the Fall, Sandy receives 25,000 direct stocked Coho. In my previous posting, I failed to mention that anyone wishing to volunteer to assist us in this project is welcome to join us at the meeting. It is a great way for you and your family to have some fun watching the fish attack those food pellets.
