Fishin Again mentioned temperature breaks......... areas where there's a quick transition from a given surface temp to water that's say 2F warmer...... usually these breaks collect debris (branches, sticks, logs, dead critters, etc.)...... so while you're trolling, look for lines of slick(smooth) water with junk in them....... This time of year the breaks can offer great planer board/stickbait fishing..... right on top.....fish both sides of the break, till you figure out where they're at, and then have at them...... Sometimes you'll have to head N through several breaks to find one with fish on it...... When you hear radio talk about fish caught at a given depth, when you get close to that depth, look for some kind of surface feature to fish...... They're usually a very important part of the puzzle... These slick lines sometimes indicate current seams too...... water moving different(faster / slower) on one side of the slick than the other....... You can watch your downspeed, or your rigger cables to help figure that out..... Don't neglect your riggers out there.....it's a great game.... have at it! -

Considering the day, ....... WTMF! -
very nice, thanks for the pics........ They're one of the most interesting critters to watch.... One year I discovered a den site that must have had 100 dead garter snakes littered around it...... the adults must have been bringing them home for "training"..... not eaten, just dead.....???

Missd..... all the hounds had fun yesterday. At the end of the day, One dog was running a yote, but was too tired to bark...... I saw the yote go thru some thick, and then 15 seconds later saw the dog, but he wasn't open..... and I figured.... musta been 2 dogs...... til the shootin' started...... then you have days like today....... 1 red... still good exercise. I did hear the totals to date ..... as of today.... for the team..... 18 yotes, and 16 reds....yotes are up from last year , but reds are down......big fun.
-
No pics from today, but what a day........ The "gang" took 5 coyotes over the dogs! Every square that held yotes had more than one...... very exciting.

2 more yotes today, and 2 reds to go with them........ both yotes were mangeeeeee.... bad...... we left both of them in the woods..... and the one that got away? a monster with beautiful fur.........

Joplin, with her coyote, myself, and the shooter..... "country". Seems to me there are more and more coyote tracks (in pairs or groups) on deer tracks....... when I 1st started chasing them I never saw that locally........ I think they're learning to hunt deer more effectively. From what I've read, they eat alot of woodchucks, mice, moles, voles, rats....... and at times of the year deer.... like hunting season (wounded deer) and spring (fawns).... I'd be interested to know if others are seeing this behavior more also (coyotes hunting deer in groups).....
-
I've seen coyotes hunt a hedgerow for fawns in the spring..... one on each side traveling along, hoping to jump a doe & fawn.... or at least that was my guess at their behavior.... and a friend from work watched a red fox trying to attack a fawn with a doe.... the doe lowered her head, charged, and gave the fox a couple quick head-butts, and ran it off..... said he never would have believed it.....

Very nice Sir...... we expect nothing less!
-
I've called in feral dogs and cats at night..... the dogs always come barking, and cats approach with a very recognizable signature..... the eyes light up and go out, light up and go out...... they look at you and look down....all the way in........ fox and yotes don't do that.... We hounded up one yote this morning, and had 2 escapeeees......
-
whether calling or runnin' the fox / yote game has become my favorite kind of hunting........ I just wish they weren't so educated.
-
Chrome..... as long as you're answering questions..... Have you seen much lot to lot variability of ammo .... of any brands? how about year to year?

Happy B-Day BTK......... Killa.... Hope you get a new hat.

Northstar Sportsmans Club hosts an annual clay target "fun" event on Jan 1. Shooting starts at 08:30 and lasts pretty much until everyone has had enough.... Cost is $20 for adults, $10 for jrs (18 & under), and includes 50 sporting clays targets and a "spit roasted beef dinner"..... It's just for enjoyment, and no prizes are awarded..... but it's always a blast.... sometimes pretty cold, but always fun. So if you're not out chasin' coyotes & fox that morning, and you're vision's good enough to shoot straight......, stop by the club and test your clay target skills.......

While backpack hunting in the Cabinet Mountains last year, one night I heard a critter come close to my tent, and figured it was a bear........ but in the morning, tracks told another story....... Wolverine! I've been visiting that area for almost 20 years now....... and this is the 1st set of Wolverine tracks I've ever crossed..... very interesting critter indeed.....

That's a good looking buck! Love the hat!
