  1. My mother wouldn't let me play with the blender when I was a lad. That sticks with me today. No cheater with a flasher/fly in any position. Those suckers are like a blender. I don't want anything going through that but a fish, no cheater to get FUBAR'd. I stick with spoons in both positions.
  2. Spike: I always trailered the boat to Seneca when the Big O got too BIG. I launched out of Oswego in a 19 foot Alumacraft. It's about an hour to Seneca. Put in at the North end (Geneva) and run south past the shelf. The shelf is fairly flat and gradual down to about 50 feet and then you will notice a sharp drop off. This is where you'll start thinking about lakers. Good lake trout fishing. Can also go up the canal on the NE end and fish for pike and bass. Geneva has a great boat launch.
  3. DCSO: How much backing and what type did you get on with the copper?
  4. DCSO: How much backing and what type did you get on with the copper?
  5. Can you post the link for the utube? It would help us help you.
  6. I grew up in Massena and spent most of my youth on the St. L. Great bass fishing and duck hunting. Have you tried for browns and steelhead above the Robert Moses dam?
  7. Thanks all. Kell Labs emailed the manual to me so I have it electronically. If anyone would like it, pm me. Their website won't let you on without a username and password so it wasn't easy to get it from them.
  8. Great day and thorough report Randy, I guess I cleared out all the sheepshead for you. Were you using any slide divers? What was your drop back behind the dipsies?
  9. Just ordered a DR to replace a Cannon SNT that I'm TOTALLY Disgusted with. I'm having it delivered to my marina for installation but want to ready my cannon ball hook up so I have several questions: 1. Does the kit include all the hardware necessary to install the probe to the cable. 2. Does the kit include a drop cable to connect the ball or do I need to buy a piece of lighter cable to make my own. I ordered a Walker clincher release per Billy V's method. Does anyone have the manual available to fax to me? Fax # 610-749-0795 Thanks in advance.
  10. Thanks. You missed it by that much. I'm in PA about 300 yards from the Delaware River/New Jersey border. I can still smell NJ with an East wind. Did I say that? I meant to use my internal voice  I meant the flowers and all
  11. Gobi imitations have been working well this year on the browns with the Stinger Glow Gobi being hot. Gobis hug the bottom so they should be fished there. I tried the Yeck Gobi but couldn't buy a bite. I haven't tried a gobi since the browns moved deeper and suspend a bit more. I haven't tried the brand you cite. Mine may stay in the tackle box until next year. The Stinger glow gobi is a copper cup with a subtle glow paint strip on the front along one side. Jon's Little Salmon still has them available. Were your hits on the bottom or were you up a bit? The browns in Mexico Bay have been showing a hunger for NK-28 Glow Frogs. I took a hit on a Stinger Ice Frog within a few minutes of lowering it but the spoon broke. I'm reluctant to try another while the Glow Frogs are working so well. An added benefit of the glow frog is that you may be surprised by a stray king that comes in close.
  12. Talk to Mike's Marina (Mexico Bay, Little Salmon River). As of Monday they had slips available. 315-963-3119
  13. Keithg: The data on 44 degrees at 60 feet came from me; I'll privide data and let you make your own decisions. I marked significant bait and arches between 70 and 95 fow but they seemed to dry up deeper than that. I wouldn't have been surprised to find a king in there but, more interesting was that all the browns came from 70-75 fow which put them well below the 44 degree level. This must be the effects of global warming on the fishery We had a strong NE wind on Sunday which pushed the warm surface water SW and pulled cooler water into Mexico Bay. If you look at the NOAA Lake Ontario Surface Temperature site, you will see the East end has cooled significantly from Friday. I didn't check it on Monday but I bet it was even cooler then. The prevailing Westerly winds will correct than soon so, we'll likely need to continually go deeper than 60 fow for kings. The important thing is that the thermocline is setting in and showing on fish finders. This will bring those buggers into reach of our DRs, dipsies and junk.
  14. The Dapper Dan made me proud last weekend. I had 3 guests on board and we managed a 4-man limit on browns. Saturday was slow with just 2 of us on board. We took 2 browns with the first on a Stingray Killer Dolphin 67/90 at 2.4. The second came on a Blue Whale 36 inches behind a 4/0 Lure Jensen copper/silver dodger. That DR was set 80/90 and speed was 2.4. Got one skipper in a copper back NBK cheated 10 feet up from the ball. The ball was at 90/130 and speed was 1.9. The Dapper Dan had 4 anglers on deck on Sunday. We managed a 4-man limit on browns with one skipper thrown in with a final tally of 12 for 17. Most were on NK-28 Glow Frogs and a NK-28 Sea Sick Waddler. 8 on the Glow Frog 3 on the SSW 2 on Stingray Killer Dolphin 1 on Stinger Copper cup NBK 1 on Stinger Ice Frog (more on this) 1 Skipper on Hammer Fly and Mountain Dew on Black Spin DR 1 data lost in the excitement The Glow Frog was favored whether on the cheater or the main line. The browns seemed to zero in on it. We had 1 hit on the Stinger Ice Frog which is similar but the spoon broke. This was a new spoon connected with a Berkley 30# coast lock clip behind 15# fluorocarbon and a slide diver. The clip came back in one piece and closed so the spoon eye ripped through. I ran the 4/0 dodger again on Saturday and it seemed to be a definite winner. It out produced everything when it was out. The slide diver worked well also. It was set with a 30-40’ lead in back of the diver, set back 250’ on #3. We ended with a triple on browns. It started with a 3.5# taking the SSW on the slide diver, followed by a 5# on the Glow Frog off a DR and ending with a 7# brown firing the other DR on the Killer Dolphin behind the dodger. These were set at 67 over 73 and speed was 2.4. Most were in 70 to 95 fow with 80 being our target. Spoons set anywhere from 5 to 10 feet above the bottom. DR's were cheated fixed up 10'. Target speed was 2.4. The Glow Frogs were the clear favorites. If the Glow Frog was on the cheater - it fired. If the Glow Frog was on the main line - it fired. The slide diver was set up with 30 yards of 30# Big Game behind 30# Fireline terminated with 6 to 8 feet of 15# fluorocarbon. This worked well at about 30-35 behind the diver when set out 250 feet on #3. I went solo on Monday morning and did another 7 for 12 on browns in 3 hours. All came on a 2-rod spread (one slide diver and 1 DR cheated). Again, the numbers were around 80 fow with the main spoon set 5' up from the bottom and cheated at 10' up. The slide diver was set out 50' behind the diver and back 250 on #3. Speed was 2.0 to 2.4. One dipsy hit came on an inside turn at 2.2 mph. All were 7-8# browns except for the last which was a 3.5# brown with a lamprey. The lamprey went back in 2 pieces. I made it easy for myself and only pulled Glow Frogs on the DR and a SSW on the slide diver. I took 3 on the SSW slide diver and the rest on the Glow Frogs. Again, the main DR spoon followed the dodger by 30-36 inches. I managed 2 sets of doubles. The first was on the DR rod with both the main and cheater firing on Glow Frogs with a brace of 7# browns. The second double was a large brown on the DR which I dropped in close and a 7# brown on the SSW slide diver. Interesting to note that, as I was retrieving the Glow Frog DR after the brown dropped off, I watched another strike in the prop wash about 25 feet back. I couldn't identify the fish other than it was a trout/salmon in the 8-10 pound range. It hit and released in the blink of an eye. It might have been a Coho. I guess I can call that one a triple because I did have a total of 3 fish on. Saturday and Sunday we found the kings in the Oswego area. They are sitting on the bottom in the 300-350 fow range. My screen looked as if it was running in demo mode. I had 20 arches at any one time. The kings were so thick you could walk across the lake without getting your toes muddy. Hopefully they will start coming up this week. The thermocline was showing on the graph both Saturday and Sunday steadying up between 80 and 90 feet. On Monday, I had 44 degrees at 60 feet in Mexico Bay. Here’s a picture of our triple: [ Here’s a shot of the Saturday tally. We dropped a bled out fish as we were transferring it to the cooler from the bleed rope so we are only showing 11. I share a dock with Trout One Charters so I used his display board: Thanks to John, Andy and Chris for a great day on the water! These guys made for great fishing partners and we all had a good time.
  15. Ahso, now I understand. If you are looking to spread out for the least cost, seems you have green flies covered with the Hammer. Go white glow or Little Boy Blue so you have a wider range of options versus being Mr. Green Jeans. Some days they like green, and some days they like white. White glow usually does well at sun up and dusk and deep during the day.
  16. The flies are so bad right now that the salmon are reluctant to come up top side.
  17. Yes to both riggers on 1 battery but then that battery must always be your trolling battery.
  18. If you are trolling with the main engine, you shouldn't have a problem. You can always troll on 1 battery and shut off the second to ensure you always maintain a fresh battery. Start and run out on both batteries to ensure they are topped off. Switch to 1 battery for the day and save the 2nd in case the trolling battery doesn't have enough snort to start your engine. You can alternate batteries each time you go out to ensure they both get cycled. Turn off all unecessary loads if you are concerned about battery life. Your engine probably doesn't put out many amps at a troll but should meet the demands for the fish finder and riggers if you start with a charged battery.
  19. A little more information would help us help you. Are you running other electronics off the batteries: fish finder, VHF, stereo, down probe, refrigerator, GPS, live wells etc.? Does your kicker have an electrical system that will feed your bus? Does your fish finder (or GPS) show your bus voltage? If so, set a low voltage warning to warn you. Can you isolate your batteries through a perko switch (troll with one and save a fully charged battery for start)?
  20. Yeah, you were pretty excited. Matt opened the cooler 10 times to look at his fish if he did it once.
  21. If no luck, try the next best thing - storing on your trailer at a marina. Most have gobbs of unused space now because the boats are in the water, not the barn. Mexico bay: Mike's Marina, lot storage available Catfish Creek Marina, lot and barn storage available I stored a boat for a season at Fingerlake Marine about 15 miles south of Sodus. Saved 500 miles of towing each weekend in exchange for $300 for 6 months in a barn. It's half way between Seneca and LO. Seneca has great laker fishing when the Big O gets too Big.
  22. Yakima Bait Company makes spin and glows and all manner of wobbly corks. Google them up, they sell on the internet.
  23. Steve: Put your post in the Open seats/trade a trip section. Open seats are advertised there. I have an open seat listing for this weekend but not next weekend.
  24. I wasn't in the Oswego Co. tournement so kind of felt like I was singing a different tune than others. Boy the lake got pretty empty around weigh in time. Left my boat as the only target for the biting flies. When I shooed the flies, my boat floated higher by about an inch. I think I had more fly meat on the boat than fish meat. Met 2 forum members Saturday, fireplug and thompsm7, and trolled all day from 80 fow through 560 fow. Managed to take 1 steelie at 90/125 on an NBK copper back. 1 other savage hit that stole an SSW about 90/145. Slow day, hot and lots of flies. 5 pm T-storm wrapped 2 riggers and 3 wires into a FUBAR but we managed to get all undone with no loss, just a few bear patches on my probe cable. Sunday fished with The Proffesor and bounced back with a great morning. We followed the tournement pack out of the break water and planned on stoping at 100 fow but when we hit 70 feet we started marking a lot of fish and bait. We took a quick vote and decided it was better to work the fish we saw under our keel than head off in search of others so we set down there. The toruney fleet either missed the marks or had other things in mind. We managed 9 for 12 on browns. They seemed to like 2.2 on the ball and 70/80. Lost a nice one 6 inches shy of the net. Took a double on 1 rod in a 3-way contest between the main line, cheater and me. Got them both in the boat. Copper back NBK and NK-28 glow frog took all but 1 which came on a blue dophin. We kept a limit of 3-5 pounders. 70 degrees can be mighty cold when you are soaked all day. Begged off on the afternoon run due to the rain and chills. Monday morning The Proffesor and I met up with Amazing Action and a friend. The fish were still full from Sunday's buffet. Everyone seemed to be struggling. We converted 15 gallons of gas into 1-3# laker. It came at 90/125 on a glow frog. We had 2 or 3 hit and runs. Amazing Action has fished with me 2 times now and each time we get 1 laker and nothing else I think I'll call him Slob Action until his curse is broken or maybe Amazing Slob. I thought I would mention that The Proffesor works the back of the boat very well. Fast and accurate-he taught me a few things. I am however, trying to understand his reason for tossing my spoons over the back without first snapping them to the leader. With his skill and experience, I'm sure he has a good reason but I've yet to grasp it We pulled wire dipsies and slide divers, a thumper and DRs, and 1 inline. We dragged flies and spoons through the water but all hits came on spoons off the DR's. Temps were erratic. 72 on the surface dropping to only 68 at 70 down. Found 38 degrees at 100-115 feet but it was erratic; 38 then 55 then 42 all within 10 seconds. Didn't mark any bait or fish past about 350 fow. Saw the most bait and marks between 70 and 150 fow. The fleas were very bad on Saturday, better on Sunday and mostly missing on Monday (at least in my water column). Blew a fuse on a rigger at the surface on the last retrieve of the day. Sure glad it wasn't the first retrieve as I didn't have a spare. I enjoyed the weekend and made some friends. Even managed to match a river float guide with a prospective customer (Thom, when will I get my commission?). Had 5 different guests aboard over the weekend. You guys are welcome back.
  25. Cabelas has some good value combos. You can "combo-up" about any configuration you want. I believe the Cabelas trolling reels are Okumas packaged for Cabelas. Their Depthmaster rods are good and as with all Cabelas named items, you get a lifetime guarantee. If it fails or you break it, they will replace it with no questions asked. I suggest you get linecounters only for your first few reels to provide you with the greatest flexibility with limited investment. Your English is better than my French. www.cabelas.com
