  1. lucked out early this year! OCT 7th , i had 0 motivation to get out and sit on Sunday,i spent all day Saturday trying to get my nephew a youth hunt deer in the rain to no avail. Sunday evening i tinkered around the house until my wife insisted i get out of her hair. finally i convinced myself to just get in a tree and enjoy the relaxation. i headed to the hardwoods with mostly red and white oak , the stand put the NE wind in my face. i was txting with a buddy joking how it was a nice night to watch squirrels.we were both convinced this was night was a wash. at around 5:40 i hear crunching behind me (down wind) !?! i can see some legs in the brush and some horn but wasint convinced it was a shooter. he was crunching acorns at 25yds but still didint get a great look at him with all the foliage. then he finally took a few more steps towards me stuck his nose up in the air and started licking his lips .. i said oh S*IT he's on to me its now or never.. just as he started t do the turn and burn i snapped one off like i was shooting a recurve. and drilled him in the boiler room , he crashed hard got up and crashed again then it went silent. it happened so fast my heart never even raced .. it was almost like did that really happen moment. Best of luck to all this season !
  2. I would consider invasive plants like australian phragmites much easier to grow then fussy natives. Kidding of course but I have ovisosly considered it myself due to its cost and duribilty it would be hard to beat of your goal is to make solid screen cover fast. But obviously their are many other eco friendly reed and switchgrass types. Right now I do a winter mowing on my natiive golden rod then a light disking. it's nearly 6' tall right now and the deer seem to love it as edge cover. If you take the thuway down twards dunkirk they are using a type of hybrid willow for snow fence it's thick and grows fast seems like it would be great but again water is key.. One thing I found is don't mow around new tree bare root plantings add a shove of wood chips and let the grass grow around it. It helps shade and hold moisture longer in the hot sun. I have also taken bare root trees from the DEC stock in the spring and planted them in 1 gallon containers baby them all summer then plant them in the fall with about 10x more success rate but also more work digging a hole. But what the heck do I know I still have a buck tag and frozen fingers typing this.. But to enjoy the habitat improvements as much as the hunting and have seen benifets to all wildlife.
  3. Took my nefew out for his first opener. Had a great morning the buck came out and hit a scrape after watching a fox mouse around us for over an hour ! 20yd shot dropped him His first deer ...One happy kid !! He was about in tears. He asked how old it was I told him at least 7.5 and declining....the one iv been after for years
  4. 100% chance it's going to rain bullets today! Good luck to all!
  5. Been there plenty of times ... hang in there good luck
  6. I wish everyone on here would just shoot the first 4pt they see and go home for the season. I'm sick of competing with guys that work as hard as I do to shoot mature deer. .. I support QDM, but honestly if you wanna shoot a 4pt and go home and watch football the rest of the season that's great one less guy in the woods to shoot the buck I'm after! Unfortunately too many good ol boys treat deer like the enemy and try to exterminate them with total disregarded for laws or managment. Tags are plentiful and ECO are spread so thin in my area it just makes it easy.
  7. Nice one Sean. It's no 160" but nice
  8. I was down to 2 hunts left for bow. I chose not to hunt last weekend and let the property rest. Had perfect conditions for a stand I havint sat in for 3 weeks. This guy came in solo but on a mission had to give him a grunt to stop. He gave me a 15yd shot he didint even flinch he walked another few steps and tipped over ..whew!! Good luck to all that are still in pursuit.
  9. Bald buck down!! Lol.. did you put Rogaine in you mock scrape...hehe he
  10. Congrats to all that have BBD! It's crunch time
  11. Oh man.. I hate reading this while stuck at work with a buck tag in my pocket ..it's gotta be worst then waterboarding!
  12. I'm sure all you NY hunters can relate to this story... shoot your bow once, first hunt show up late to your stand. Miss a 10pt at 20yds then shoot a 190" an hour later. Only in iowa!!! https://iowawhitetail.com/forum/threads/brothers-bow-kill.56755/
