ANYONE WANNA SEE A "SENECA CHALLENGE"?
Hookedup replied to lakebound88's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
With this warm early spring you will see weeds and fleas by the Lake trout derby. We have been getting pods of green fresh weeds the last 5 weeks on Seneca. That is the only draw back to these lakes. Like Nick said he is working on it, no one wants an observer and any ideas to keep people honest would be welcome? A polygraph is big bucks. We could all take our chances with a cooler check and flags on the antena of each boat? I think for the most part we would be ok but if it gets big you will have problems. The end of July is prime time so the boxes should be good im in if we can all come together and set up a fun tournament that could last for years. Sean -

Same thing we found the day we were out. Two groups of fish and if you were not in them it was all over. I found a lot of fish out in 50 fow but the were not interested. They could have been bass and pan fish they were all schooled up. Sean -

The trees are great I run inline or the big boards, most of the time it is inlines. They are from great lakes planers his stuff is great, I also have the elevated dual dipsey holders and they save on the back big time. Sean -

Hi Andy, I wouldn't of fish yesterday in my small boat the wind was cranking. The launch at Warrens worked great. You want to launch and go to the East along the docks then turn North around the bouy to get to the lake. Dont just take the short way North/East from tha launch it is all sand and only 1ft deep. I never thought I would be fishing on Lake Ontario in February but after all the great fishing we have had on Seneca the last two months, and the reports of open water we decided it was time to try the big lake for Browns. With all the wind we had Friday I didn’t know if we would make it out but this morning at 5am the wind had switched over to a light breeze out of the South/East. We hit the lake at 8:00 am after launching out of Warrens Hook Line and Sinker where we also picked up some tackle. Once we hit the lake the snow and wind started and it stayed that way off and on all morning. The water temp and air temp were both 34 deg most of the day, it was cold but with the heated cabin it was easy to get warmed up. We had five of us on the boat and we were able to run a great spread of crank baits and spoons off the boards, riggers and I even ran a 25ft copper rig off the outrigger with good results. We set up just west of Sodus in 30 FOW; I wanted to get most of the riggs out before we hit the fish. Once we hit 13 fow we tripled up with three browns, it was nonstop till 1:30 when we called it quits. At one point we had seven Browns on and my dad, sister, and daughter got to put over 30 great looking browns in the boat. My sisters brother-in-law was also out, he took a few for the grill and the rest all went back in the lake for the next trip. Cranks out 120 on the boards, spoons down 5 to 10ft on the riggers back 60, and a 25ft copper rig off the outrigger all took several fish. The boat ready to go! Flea flicker 20lb from cortland then you lighter floro leader off of that, or 30lb mono with the same floro leader. You should be ok for derby but a couple weeks later and you will need it. Sean

FYI - DEC Proposed Regulation Changes
Hookedup replied to Tim Bromund's topic in Open Lake Discussion
Its a good Idea The Rainbow population needs some help down on the Finger Lakes. I know on my boat we started the one Bow limit last year and all of my clients have been more than happy with it. The Laker limit goes along with this, they want to try to balance things out to give the other fish in the lake a chance. From what I was told (this passed) the laker limit takes effect this October and the Rainbow limit starts spring of 2013? We keep track of every fish we boat for the state and this past year we found a nice two pound year class of Bows coming back on Seneca and Cayuga. Keuka lake needs the five Laker limit, I doubt it will do much since the lake gets minimum angler pressure. I think the Bow limits on the North tribs made a difference over the last few years and it should help down this way. Some guys will not like the fact that they can only keep one fish from the creek, but if it helps bring back the population to even close to the late 80s levels I'm all for it. Sean -
SODUS LAUNCH OPEN OR FROZEN
Hookedup replied to skyn60's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for all the info shameless. All of us guys down South appreciate it, I am thinking about Saturday or Sunday we will have to see what it looks like Firday. Thanks again Sean -
Lake trout by the thousands 3lb fish, they stock salmon but I wouldn't plan on catching them.
-
I will check it thursday when im working up that way. Most years they would be ice fishing it Sean
-
What every you guys want to do. We can start small this year see who wants in for 100 a boat and who is willing to weigh in at the same location? Do it in the evening and every one will have time to make it to the weigh station. What do you guys think?
-
You could do both! Have your big fish Friday then have a one man box on Saturday for $100 per boat. Most guys wont fish Friday but we will all be on the lake Saturday.

Any smelt left in Seneca or Cayuga
Hookedup replied to pokepole39's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Thats bad news Bill, These Lamprey had just hit these fish most of them had not even broke the skin yet. Every Brown we caught had them, one had two and another Brown had three. It could be a bad two or three years with this new bunch of Lampreys. Last year the number were down and looking good with just a few big Lampreys, this year looks bad. Sean -
Any smelt left in Seneca or Cayuga
Hookedup replied to pokepole39's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
When the Zebra mussels took off the smelt went down hill. The lampracide treatment was not put in most areas that had smelt spawning and it was not put in at the same time of year. On a side note the lampreys are back in full force in Seneca most of all the fish we have been catching the last few weeks have had five inch lampreys on them . I don't know what year class a five to six inch lamprey would be? (they do spend time in the creek before they hit the lake). I don't know how Cayuga looks but we will soon find out. Sean -
If anyone needs a winter boat for the Finger Lakes my parents have one for sale. Its a 16 ft Mirro Craft with a 15 hp Mercury and a Karavan Trailer. It has an eagle fish finder, battery, and cover. The boat is an 2005 or 2007 the motor was manufactured in 2005. The Boat and motor have about 5hrs on it. The boat is covered in my parents barn and the motor had stabill ran in it and is in my heated basement. I took a pic of the motor tonight it looks new same with the boat. When I get a chance I will get a pic of the boat and the exact year off of the title. Asking $3200 OBO they are sick of looking at it in the barn. The motor would also work great for a kicker it is electric start.

Every once in a great while Seneca has to knock you down a peg or two today was that day. I had Dan and his fishing crew from PA out today for what we thought would be some great fishing. The fish had moved from the South end we fished both sides all the way past Glenora with 6 fish to show for it. Four Lakers, two short Salmon and one big Salmon lost at the back of the boat. Only Bait I found was 250 to 300 down out in the center of the lake, Lakers were parked at 120 to 200 and wouldn’t move. It was still a beautiful day to be on the water, and we all had a good time.
