  1. For the breakoffs everyone has those days even with 50# leaders. I believe it was Ernie Lantiegne that came up with an improvement on the tourney tie that had a drop of epoxy in the center of the treble. At times he believed that the line gets wrapped back thru the treble's crotch due to fish twisting and thrashing and that the tight crotch there where the hook bend starts will cut line between the single and the treble. I have not tried this tip but it has me interested. Also keep an eye on the line itself between the teeth that later season salmon have and the thrashing along with our netting and unhooking activities with each fish you land there is alot of time for abrasions on leaders. We tie hook/bead rigs as spares and at the first sign of a nick we will pull the fly if it is still in good shape and thread it on a new leader and you are right back into fishing with confindence. Nice job. j
  2. If you got screamed at for crossing behind someone, you probably deserved it and were TO CLOSE. I have never had anyone yell at me about how close I cross, even when they have boards out. If you see boards you should assume COPPER... If you are getting screamed at on a regular basis (enough to post on here about it!) you should look at how close you pass alongside and behind others. my $.02
  3. Anyone know what is happening this. I agree that there should be some concessions made for these events. Anyone taking action? j
  4. Pretty sure you are not the only one but I also think that it is JULY, 7/5...
  5. Not sure if you noticed the Wanted post below but a member lost one otter boat this weekend. Might want to try to contact him
  6. I tried a few years back, went outside the harbor, hit some humps just east and went to ford shoals west and never found anything but gobies and bass. Not saying that they are not there but I have never found them. Found it was just easier to trailer somewhere that I know they are. If you do find them let me know. J
  7. It is not an out of state thing, they are pushing this law as it is fairly new and there are needless drownings every year in spring and fall. Case in point look at the search for the 5 year old and father in Jefferson County going on now. Just wear it. j
  8. Are you looking for a how to book? One of the most useful items that I have found is the precision trolling books. Not sure if they are in print any more but full of information for walleye trolling baits and their dive charts. Beyond that a search turned up a book by Gary Parsons on amazon that was called walleye trolling secrets that I had never heard of. Might want to check that out. J
  9. There is no other name for them but there are similar items, The blade is chrome, the tape is green on one side and is a chrome tape with lightning bolt type 3D images inside it on the other side, the image changes as you twist the blade in your hand. I think the pigpen #2 is similar but I think that isa chrome blade with green on front and chrome scale pattern on back, might be easier to find or a decent substitute if you can't find it. I know the shops in Pulaski carry it. j
  10. Went sunday night in the boat, found fish along shore but tons of weeds on top that fouled 2 of every 3 casts as the wind picked up. Droped a few and managed one that had gizzard shad in it also. A lot of small fish right on shore, saw eyes in 6" of water last night and passed over some very small fish with lights on. Fishing might be a little slow for a while between the weeds still alive and those floating and the fish filling on shad before the winter die off but it is coming. j
  11. Since when is the hatchery hybrids producing hybrids that they are fin clipping? There is no doubt in my mind that this is an immature king from the pictures that you posted. Have a good day j
  12. I'm with you, bring on the fillets... j
  13. Had a guy fishing alone take a 300 copper from our boat this past weekend. he was only 20yards off the board and decided to cut behind it right after he passed us. If someone is running boards don't cut behind them guys. jj
  14. I agree with the others above, find space if you are new, you will catch fish and be happier out there. If you can't fish with space, GO WITH THE FLOW.... If you are a newb and don't know what the others are doing but choose to fish the pack, set up outside or inside the pack, watch what they are doing and go with the majority of the traffic. As adam knows direction outside the salmon river is generally north and south, every year you get some guys that are either not paying attention or just don't get it try to cut accross the traffic. This typical yearly problem is easy to avoid if you watch, pay attention, and plan ahead. If you are looking to turn in a crowd, push in or out gradually as you pass traffic and have clearance until you get inside or outside the pack and make your turn and work your way back into the pack of boats. Guys that try to make the turn from the inside of the pack to the outside through the majority of the traffic path usually recieve more hand gestures from others. One other topic to bring up, riggers and divers are fairly easy to make sharper turns with him, long lines are not. If you are new to combat trolling fish simple riggers and divers. If a large boat is running boards they are running copper and or lead cores. They cannot and usually will not turn as easily as small boats or others with no long lines out. Also there gear stretches out 3-500' behind the boat and 55-105' deep. If they are fighting fish they may be even further behind the boat, that should your deciding factor for cutting behind other boats. Pay attention and plan ahead and you can usually avoid all but the most crazy of situations.
  15. If you already have the 2 down rigger rods then go ahead and stack them like you plan but if not then get yourself a set of wire diver rods instead. Run one rigger and one wire diver off each side to start out. You will get more addicted from there but that is the way to start. Flashers, (spindoctors and echips) not dodgers, the flashers are alot more speed forgiving. Get some whites based colors, the dots are always good or plain white/glow crush. Get some chrome based colors, like Cpt Valium or double chrome. Get some green and some chartruese with glow tape, I use these most in echips/protrolls. That will be a good start for flashers. jason
  16. I do it the exact same way, Inprobed Clinch to the quick snap, the quick snap is also used to poke into the pool noodle for storage, open snap poke into noodle wrap till you can insert hook points. j
  17. If you get your leader material right up to the lead and keep it there when you finish the knot off it helps a little, if you make sure that the lead is blunt and has no point it helps, but you will see that tail poke through from time to time on lead no matter what you do. I have reeled the rig in and found that the lead worked it's way out of the sheath while trolling. Just carefully poke it back it, you will see in most cases that the sheath didn't tear, the lead just works it's way out and the sheath opens up around it. If the sheath tears and gets frayed looking you want to retie your knot. j Paul, how do you peel the sheath back after the knot is tied?
  18. I talked with John Bretza from Okuma a year ago about the blue diamond rods and asked if they could look at the Fuji Silicon Nitride II guides on the wire dipsy instead of rollers. End product will be more $$ then the regular dipsy but would be nice to run wire line guides like these instead of rollers. j
  19. Not to ruin your report for the weekend but this should be a sticky somewhere. I run all tekota's and have only had an issue with one drag that was sticky, opened her up and a little cleaning and it runs great but I have heard alot of guys refer to issues lately with the shimano drags and this would help alot of them in the future. j
  20. Anyone run these out on trash lines to see where they are running? I almost bought one for checking all my lead and copper at different speeds/tackle but I baulked when I thought about the added bulk and the possible change that it would lead to with a rig like that. I really wanted to get accurate data about where my rigs were running but I think that pulling the TD would be off a little from actual. Wire divers should be pretty accurate if the TD is attached right behind the diver or at the lure but a 3-5 color lead core might be way off with the extra drag. Any thoughts? j
  21. You didn't mention speed, especially down speed, that is a big factor, if you are going slower this week then you are dropping deeper. As stated above if you were going with a current the drag on your line/lure was light and it dropped lower. You will now when you have to bump your gps speed up to keep your down speed in check. If you don't speed up your gear could be sinking as it drifts along with the current below. Also if you made a turn before you noticed the bumping, I have been on boats with guys that have bounced bottom after turning and your inside line dropped down as it slowed then they think that they have super divers that reach unheard of depths. Keep with your rule of thumb 3-1. Hows the fishing out of oswego? j One other thing, the only accurate way to know where your diver or any other gear should be running is to do the bump check on bottom while trolling in a straight line and with no down current. Unfortunately, the amount of time necessary to do these checks is too much for me or most of us to sacrifice with the little fishing time we weekenders actually get.
  22. You are killing me. I am stuck in canada till the end of the day. keep the updates coming. j
  23. Ok how about some places to stay near Pt Clinton? I would be trailering from NY and have no info on the area. thanks j
