  1. Part of the beauty of this site is getting many opinions!! So we have 2 trains of thought here with a $6 cost difference. Prior to 2000 when repairing a dog's torn ACL I had to rely on tied braided nylon suture to act as the new ACL. Now we have a crimping tool to secure an inert monofilament cord. There would be occasional knot failure with the old method but only an improper crimp can cause the new to fail. I'm thinking $6 now may save the cost of a cannonball later......
  2. No warm water outflow changes everything. ☚ī¸. Like you Katydid, I fished there a ton during 4 college years with some of my classmates. You could tolerate being out there in chest waders for hours cause of the warm outflow. Egg sacs were great and during the smelt run we would drift a live one out and wait for something to grab it. When the fish weren't biting we would use weighted trebles to snag carp just for the fun of the fight. Whoever caught the biggest carp bought the first pitcher at that little bar up on 34B.....is that place still there?? Memory lane....
  3. About 2 feet from the weight attachment end of one of my downriggers the wire has started to fray. Is there a best way to cut the end off and securely reconnect to the metal loop at the end?
  4. No ice yesterday. Water is down but the pad at Dean's carries out enough for now. If the lake dropped another foot it might be a problem for a deep V. First time I've launched in winter and my Wellcraft Walkaround was fine. If memory serves me in past years February and March the lake is often lower than it is now so not sure about Dean's then but maybe could fit under the bridge at Taughannock at that water level.
  5. Had some time this afternoon so headed to Dean's and on the water by 2:30. Went North and zigzagged from 60-150 fow in search of fish. The screen had the most marks throughout the water column in 110-130 fow. Tinkered with speed from 1.6-2.3 and adjusted lure depths a few times. Finally found hungry lake trout down 80 feet. Picked up 3 stout fish off the chute copper with a flasher/fly. They liked the speed below 2.0. 3 other times that rod fired but fish didn't hook up. One laker took a spoon off the rigger also at 80 feet down. Plenty of fish were higher in the column but they were not buying what I was selling. Off the water at 4:30 and a fish fry with the family for dinner. Plenty of fillets left so excited to try out the smoker my wife gave me for Christmas. Hoping this Winter has more calm days like today!
  6. It used to be easy in and out in the late 80's through early 90's. Irishgoodbyes must know the scoop on Millikan these days. I've gone near by boat the past few years but never trolled in close.....too many bad memories of boaters moving in tight on us when we waded out with chest waders and were casting. I hated boaters back then.... jealous of course! 😁
  7. That's great!! Brings back memories of my college days. We would drive from Ithaca up to the power plant in Lansing and fish the outflow from January on. Seemed like we had better luck catching browns and salmon in the winter using spoons or drifting egg sacs in the current. Lakers picked up in April and May as the smelt started to run. Hot pink Rooster tails were great for lake trout back then. Does anyone know if they even allow fishing at Millikan anymore?
  8. Read you all loud and clear with safety being a priority! What speeds do you drop down to in cold water? Is there a point where the slow speed kills the action of the lures? With stickbaits are certain sizes, styles critical, (ie floater/divers, deep divers, solid or jointed). Is there a certain increase in water temp in Spring that triggers a change in fish habits? Sorry lots of questions but nothing else to do this time of year. 😉
  9. With deer season over I'm hoping to hit Cayuga when the weather cooperates from now through April but I've never fished it this time of year. Summer and Fall I've typically worked from 120 fow and deeper with spoons on downriggers and flasher/flies on dipseys or a copper down the chute. What adjustments should I make now? I do have some inline boards for shallow fishing but never used. Don't have stickbaits but Christmas is coming so should I have certain styles on my list? Thanks in advance for your input. Greg
  10. Thanks for the report. Looked like calm water out there today. Glad to hear you took advantage of it. I'm hoping to get out there again soon. Just need the weather like today when I've got the time.to get out there.
  11. Sorry to hear about your shoulder. Went through it 5 years ago. All I can say is if your surgeon did a good job you need to embrace the physical therapy with a passion and it will come back for you. Prior to my surgery I couldn't play catch with my kids never mind draw the bow. Been able to do both ever since but I still make time to do the exercises that keep the shoulder sling strong.....I'm not ready to give in to a crossbow anytime soon. 😉
  12. Is there a set date when they drop the water level? I've never paid close attention before but thinking might try to get out there on some nice days this Winter
  13. Previous post is to you Holy Diver!!
  14. Big beautiful buck. Hunting is like the lottery.....you can't win if you don't play. Glad your wife kicked you out of the house for the afternoon.... You owe her a nice night out on the town. 😉
  15. I only kept those 2. Female had dropped her eggs but the male was still loaded with fertilizer. 😉
  16. A busy weekend but finally had a chance to get out on the water this afternoon. Could not convince my daughter to come along so a solo trip. Didn't expect the North wind to create such a chop but it was a nuisance until I was heading back when of course, it died down. Found some Lake trout, (including the bookends in the picture) that were all over the white flasher/fly combo on the chute copper. Couldn't make anything happen with spoons and no active silvers, not even a Skippy. Ended up a nice couple hours on the lake.....way better than the alternative of watching the Giants lose again!!
  17. That's what it's all about, having a great time out there. With your son asleep I guess you had 50 perch to fillet. 😜
  18. Thanks. Hoping for a nice morning to get out this weekend
  19. Very nice group of fish. Hoping to get some lines wet next weekend. What were the fish after, spoons, flies or both?
  20. With the lake trout in prespawn mode now they tend to head to the South end of the lake. I followed that advice last weekend and found some big fish around the power plant. Good luck.
  21. Agreed. Half I dealt with were easy pickings for the gulls. It did make me wonder if the rigger was quiet since a little one or two would be riding along for some time before I would notice a little twitch on the rod tip and check it.
  22. Depending on what you like the smaller lake trout are nice grilled, (add your favorite seasoning), or look back to ERabbit post earlier this Summer where he cuts the fillets into boneless pieces, soaks in milk overnight, then coats in House-autry seafood coating and pan fries in oil. We just finished dinner tonight cooked that way with yesterday's catch along with salt potatoes.....and of course your favorite beverage. đŸģ If you have a smoker you have another option..... I've been lucky enough to have some of Chowder's smoked Cayuga lake trout and it's top shelf!!
  23. Put in early at Dean's Cove and enjoyed the sunrise while heading farther South than I've run all Summer. Set up on the West side near the Boy Scout Camp and started trolling North. Trying some new things, dypsy with a dodger and fly along with an inline board towing a stick bait. Third line was a rigger at 60 and added a cheater. Has there been a recent release of landlocks down there? Skippies were a nuisance hitting the rigger constantly for the first half of the 3 hour troll. Could not get anything else going so swapped out the dodger for a mountain dew flasher and a stout Laker grabbed it down about 85 over 120. Put the board away and ran 500 copper down the chute with a white flasher fly combo and could hardly keep it set before another Laker on it. Pretty consistent that as zig zag from 100-200 fow the action tended to be at 140. Kept 2 for an ERabbit style fish fry tomorrow night and let 3 more go, all were easily 7 pounds and up. Never could get anything bigger than a Skippy off the rigger. A beautiful morning on the water but it started to heat up by 10 so called it a day.
  24. That's just great. Every Fall I sit in my tree stand talking to myself and asking Mr Big Buckntoncome walking in to bow range. Now your telling me the key to fishing success is singing "Here fishy fishy"!!
