i like to run them only about 10ft off the ball usally with a short lead to the fly. mt. dew fly glow green fly and purple mirage are best but like i said make sure you always have some green out. glow nuclear has been best this year so far. speed anywhare from 1.9 to 2.7 on the gps i dont have down speed. just keep varying it to something pops. they work well on the dipseys to. better chance at LLs and other silvers at the higher end of speed but some days lakes are all i can get. go to the fingerlakes section of this site lot of guys on there that are a lot better at this than i am but most of what I've been able to do i learned here

What is everyones BEST spring setup for browns look like?
ifishy replied to Outcast189's topic in Tackle and Techniques
the last two years my best set up has been leadcore off the corner 2 colors out with a 28 spoon i run two sticks off the boards and if its slow i'll put down a rigger or an extra stick out its a 14 ft boat with a 5 foot beam so its only two people though and its tough to run 6 when i cant spread with depth also a good set up for Land locks in the fingers but there i run two riggers two short cores and two sticks with the cores and sticks on the boards and will swap out as the fish dictate. -
maybe a question to ask the DEC but if i remember my biology right if coho and chinook are truly different species than there hybred offspring should be steril. In fact if i remember correctly the inability to produce viable offspring is what makes the final determination that they are in fact different species and not just strains. so if chinook and coho are different species than there could be no second or third generation crosses as the original hybred would be unable to reproduce in the hatchery. is it instead possible that a mistake was made at collection time and a coho male or female was mistakenly stripped and added to the chinook stock creating some hatchery raised fish that would get clipped?

its nice to know there is at least someone who cares and actully tries to do it right even if they are very likely overworked and understaffed gives the impression of good knowledge and research -

i believe they are pretty good as table fare as well they should be commercially fished and turned into fish sticks -

ifishy replied to repoman826's topic in Open Lake Discussion

is there a web site for this derby? have been looking for a late summer one to fish is it a 3 day or a one day derby?
-
i'm leaning towards north end because thats shortest drive use manual down riggers so i rely on dipseys to get deeper than 60 down or so its nice when i know theres a t-cline up high because i can fish that with the riggers and lead cores thanks for the advice though i will definatly start with the dipsys deep

planning an am trip tomarrow debating between launching out of roys, sampson, lodi, or severn. I dont have a probe so was wondering if anyone could give some info about what depth the thermocline is in any of those areas. most likely will go to sampson or lodi as i have never tried those two before. will report if i catch any

I havent been on in a while. I apologize to lakebound 88 I had no intention of putting this derby down and in fact if I were in town that weekend I would be trying like hell to fish it I was more venting because i have been very fustrated the last couple years with engine trouble and a disticnt lack of funds and am now relegated to fishing with only a kicker. I understand that putting togather something like this is difficult at best and have no illusions that I could do a better job. i hope it does well and in future years grows to something as big as the lake trout derby. I like the rule format and is my favorit style of derby when ice fishing shot gun starts are a good thing for one day torunys I guess I just put my foot in my mouth a little I just wanted to publicly apologize to the organizer for my bi***ing.

The date happens to be the weekend I get back from vacation the wife would never let me fish that day thaat being said I wish it were more small boat friendly I have a small motor and limited range so the start from the pierhead is a major disadvantage if u could fish from other launches id be more interested [ Post made via Android ]

i feel ya info from this site has gotten me to try lead core and wire dipseys this year espically they have combined for the most fish with the short cores being the best my next one to try is copper but I may wait to see if i can get a bigger boat first. if that takes to long than i will be looking for a 400 copper

Left or Right hand retrieve?
ifishy replied to Curro's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
just give it some time and you wont even notice i'm just getting back into trolling after spending the last 10years or so doing only spin cast and I picked up the rod and it felt completley natural to reel with the other hand (grew up trolling lake O with dad). just reel in a couple full cores or coppers and your muscles will get used to it quick -
Scary to take a 16' alum on one of the bigger lakes?
ifishy replied to genEus's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
I fish out of a 14 footer in all the lakes even big o its all about watching the wind if its blowing fish the calm side of the lake only if you have any doubts about your motor get an electric and stay where that can get you to shore its a great tool for controlled fishing also. If u plan to troll. Planer boards are a big plus I have an entirely homade mast I made for 20a bucks and homemade boards I inheareted from the 80s I caan troll 6 rods pretty easy if you want ill send some pics im all about the small boater [ Post made via Android ] -
