  1. given the size of the lakers that show up on the boards you think they would want to promote the fishery how many places in the world can you catch a 30lb laker? as far as protecting the species i think i remember there shorting brown trout and salmon as well due to disease issues and random thought why do they only get lakers from VT why dont they get any from the finger lakes hatcheries? there is an overpoulation in a couple different fingers (keuka) to the point where they upped the creel limit so they could lessen stocking to suppliment lake O
  2. was there on sunday found much of the same my smallest fish came on a wire dipsey back 300 so the small ones were everwhare
  3. i've never tried the chamberlins but as far as ball color i have an opinion. I run two fish shaped weights one is dark green with a white belly the other is (was) bright orange powder coat. over the last couple years one downrigger has consistently taken more fish. now this finally hit me when two weeks ago that rigger had the handle broke when i was out alone so i switched to the orange one and didnt have another hit the rest of the day (i had a dipsey out as well that was also quite). so I thought for an experiment i would spraypaint the weight black and see what happened. I went out sunday and both riggers took fish all day and in close to equal number for the first time ever. now thats the only day so far that I've fished with the painted rigger but in my mind i think it makes a difference.
  4. i debating if i can push it another two weeks and take it out once more. the garage isnt heated so its tough to say
  5. yeah weatherman called for 10+ mph west wind i figured we would have to hug the shore all day but it was dead calm we could have fished anywhere we wanted to. good luck with the sale and the new boat hopefully in the spring i will be in the market for a little bit larger aluminum myself I would like one in the 18' range.
  6. so had the chance to fish today weatherman said west wind chance of snow didnt want to risk getting stuck on the hill at severen so took the chance and went to watkins. lake was flat fishing was decent boated 9 one rainbow around 20 inches the rest LLs up to 18 inches pretty consistent action and a lot of short hits on the free sliders. everything took hits but orange was the top producer mostly spoons but the rainbow and one salmon were on flasher fly. The graph was full of fish and bait all day. caught fish from the surface to 90ish down tried to get deep to get under the small ones and still hit small ones. I dont know if there wanst any bigger fish around or if they just couldnt get to the bait. was supprised to see i had the lake completley to myself I thought there was a whole group of people that fished through the winter. Oh well if I can figure out how to keep the boat ready i'll be back out if not i'll be in the tribs till the ice comes in.
  7. a good carb cleaning goes a long ways buy a can of spray cleaner take apart the carb and clean it thoughoughly my last two motors i have solved many poblems that way one is a 66 and still runs but has been decomisioned due to a bad fuel pump and its a hog on gas the other is a mid 80s honda that sat in a garage for 10 years and now starts and runs like a top. if its stalling out at low idle than theres a good chance that gas is not flowing through the carb correctly.
  8. damn sounds like I missed it by a day guess i'll just have to try it again do you have a listing for the boat? realilistacly i'm probably still a year away but you never know the funds are moving in the right direction finally
  9. Took the long drive to watkins today and from the wind probably was the only place I could fish. ended up getting 3 smallish LL two around 20 inches one undersize. I had one bigger fish on the dipsey but it pulled the hook. I got all 4 hits in one pass across the mouth of the channel and up the east side. Other than that couldnt move a rod. My buddy bailed last minuet (got drunk) so boat controll while fishing alone was a challange. Was still fun I will probably try it again in a couple weeks if I can get a last trip in before putting the boat away. I was supprised how many other people were still out there this late in the season there must be something to this fall and winter finger lake fishing.
  10. in that case anyone elese gonna be out? my best seneca fishing has been november but its always a little testing to be out there late fall with no help in site last year late november infront of the genny on lake O my motor stalled out and never re-started had to come in on electric. this year new motor much more reliable but it still left a lasting impression.
  11. worried about the south wind myself gonna go to watkins and fish seneca i dont wanna see a crowd but is always assuring to see at least one other boat out this time of year in case of sudden trouble good luck out there
  12. plan on fishing there sunday looking forward to some november trolling has anyone been out recently
  13. 21 lines seems like a lot but honestly i'm both proud of you and jealous sounds fun
  14. soak them in fresh water than run them under the faucet while realing them i used to do a cod trip in maine and a week in the keys with my dad for years and use the LC reels for the cod we did that for 10 years and i'm using those same reels now for my dipseys they are diawa great lakes 47lcs by the way and are from the early 80's good maintenece can make good equipment go a lot ways.
  15. thats a lot of good info on how to mount it for my boat (14ft with 5ft beam) i had many of the same issues ended up making a trolling board. I used a piece of pressure treated lumber across the back 2x6 made sure to seal it with thompsons and bolted it through the gunnels with some heavy duty 4 inch bolts. i re-seal it every couple years but it has held up so far for the last 6 with no signs of cracking or spliting. bolt the rigger right to the board but use a backing plate or large washers on the underside. When i'm alone i fish the rigger oppisit the stearing wheel for balance if you only have one mount it oppisit your usuall sitting side. i also have extra rod holders and my adjustable holders that i can angle for dipseys off of this board makes a nice platform to add on to. ended up doing something similar over the bow for my homade planer mast. a little creativity and you can get away for real cheap with some of this. I plan on going out this weekend i will take some pics if i get a chance. i've been accused of haveing to many rods before as if, but my boat has been gutted and entirely re-built in order to troll. remember if you dont have a swivle or clamp base your rigger is sticking out just asking to run into somthing during launching towing or put away worth thinking about long term
  16. anyone know the reasoning or the logic behind not putting kings in caledonia? you said the dec pathologist was against it does that mean there are some disease treatment and containment issues?
  17. fluro leaders are a good investment as well i like P line but everyone has there favorites if you store it right a single spool will last years for leaders i know you have a small boat but weather permitting in the spring dont be afraid to fish places like seneca at watkins for land locks or even lake o for browns i have a 14' starcraft with a 7.5 hp motor and fish both i just follow as many different weather reports as i can find. chances are whatever spin cast rods you have can be flatlined for those things. once your set up and trolling lakers for lures get spin doctors they are expensive and i can only buy one or two a year (sad I know) but my best producers for lakers all year.
  18. you can use a braid line but wire offers the option for deeper i got an okuma 47 line counter reel and dipsey rod combo at gander mt for like 80 bucks filled it with 1000' of wire and am so glad i did. I plan on buying another one next year as the braid i run oppisit it just doesnt get as deep and therefore isnt as effective certian times of year. a couple different size dipseys will open up all the depth options you need for those lakes and keep the lures away from the boat. great first option espeically for a small boat and trolling alone. the second rod i would recomend is a leadcore can fish a lot of the water colum and again gets away from the boat for spookey fish took a ton of early season trout on short cores this year. I learned how to rig them and everything elese from this site so browse and read as much as you can. as you start to catch fish you get more hooked and have to buy more gear. sorry about that cant help it.
  19. i like to run them only about 10ft off the ball usally with a short lead to the fly. mt. dew fly glow green fly and purple mirage are best but like i said make sure you always have some green out. glow nuclear has been best this year so far. speed anywhare from 1.9 to 2.7 on the gps i dont have down speed. just keep varying it to something pops. they work well on the dipseys to. better chance at LLs and other silvers at the higher end of speed but some days lakes are all i can get. go to the fingerlakes section of this site lot of guys on there that are a lot better at this than i am but most of what I've been able to do i learned here
  20. and i thought the guy shooting salmon was bad
  21. get spin doctors best thing i ever did for seneca anything green has got a chance glow and chartruse are good as well. and if you do fish lake O spin doctors work there as well in fact got my only salmon this weekend on one and all my biggest lakers in seneca so far this year
  22. in a small aluminum you can get all the way up to the island but this time of year to many shore fisherman to go farthur
  23. the last two years my best set up has been leadcore off the corner 2 colors out with a 28 spoon i run two sticks off the boards and if its slow i'll put down a rigger or an extra stick out its a 14 ft boat with a 5 foot beam so its only two people though and its tough to run 6 when i cant spread with depth also a good set up for Land locks in the fingers but there i run two riggers two short cores and two sticks with the cores and sticks on the boards and will swap out as the fish dictate.
