  1. we used to go to key colony when i was a kid we did a charder each year there is/was a captain out of marathon called the main attraction his son ran a inshore boat called 2nd attraction they work hard for you and they know there fishing
  2. I was thinking tomarrow (sunday) was gonna be my best change gonna try to take the boat out late morning how was the launch did you go to clute? and how are the roads in watkins i come from the north end and wont tow if the roads are not clean. dont wanna dig out the waders to stream fish as they dont fit real well anymore. If i go i'll post how the fishing is.
  3. the kicker is worth its weight in gas alone. I have a 4 stroke nissan i can troll all day on less than 2 gallons i have a 6 gallon tank and top it off everyother trip at most and have never needed more than 2.5 gallons. gonna fish infront of the genny today hoping for some big lake O trout. good luck out there today is prime winter fishing weather.
  4. best advice i can give is get a pair of leadcores. they are the most productive rods i own. i have a 4 color and a 6 color that i love on the 4 color i have a piece of mono splieced in at one color and and the 6 color i have one spliece in at two colors. run a search on this site for how to set them up thats how i learned. the mono means you can run them off a board at that leangth or the full leangth. get good flurocarbon i like P-line and go the fingerlakestackle.com and pick some lures. i only have a handheld gps so for speed fish anywhare from 2.2 to 3.0 vary untill you get a hit that repeat that speed each day is different. I like big boards but inlines will work i have a homemade mast PM me if you wants some pics did the whole thing for under 50 bucks. spring and fall are my favorit times fish are up high and inclose so with good weather i can fish lake O if not seneca has several launches so i can run from the wind (small boat). If you dont want to do boards to start you can flatline the cores of the back while still using riggers also good in a crowd. get a kicker its quieter and as a result the boards are less important i started catching more fish when i went from an old 40 hp to a newerish 7.5hp I lost a lot of range but have better speed controll and better gas mileage i caught a lot more fish this year. for your rigger rods on the fingers you can use any backing you want but if your gonna fish summer the fleas can be a pain many on hear mention 30lb mono for that and it works like a charm get a spool of your prefered brand and fill the reel than go light with your leaders. I use 10lb in the fingers but keep one rod with a 20lb leader for the spin dr I like the heavier line for the twist. check your leaders often and dont be afraid to change them. with the finger lakes you want light releases on your riggers or something on a teather because you will at somepoint hit a small fish and drag it around for a while. winter on seneca is a good place to learn just keep an eye on the weather winter can turn quick. best part of the small boat mine was only winterized for like 6 weeks last year. I had it out in dec and feb. this is a good site to learn ask any questions you can. most of what i know i learned from the people on this site so i try to pass on what I can but there are many here who know a whole lot more than I do
  5. zimm this time of year drive to watkins glen and launch out of clute. set up right out of the shoot and troll the south end. typically the warm water attacts good numbers. DW super slims work or the FLT spoons last year i did real well in the top 50 feet of water off boards and riggers I usually run sliders as well and had more than one single pole doubles. lot of LLs in the 18-20 inch class but they should be a year bigger now plus there is a good chance at a rainbow. I here there are lots of browns to but i never got into any. If you want you can drag a dipsey or run deep and catch some lakers as well. I will be out in am ut with the wind down i may try to fish out of the genny in lake O or out of naples on canandaguia just because i wanna try a new lake but seneca has been good to me the last 12 months or so but it took a couple years for me to learn to catch anything consistenly there though i have limited fishing time. this site helped a ton
  6. if it catches fish you can use my remains that way but my brother might beat you to it
  7. if you put a hook in that and pull it in can you use the mink as pike bait?
  8. i did some searching on google and it seems like the strips are hard to come by and a bit pricey are there sellers that i'm missing or local retails. I definatly have an interest and will have to experiment on seneca this summer. the rockets look like there right up my ally but the thought of soaking the stips in my own brine sounds fun to get to play with a recepie. I saw on another thread about using belly meat from a kept fish. I like that option as well. when running on a spin doctor do you have to have the bait rotaing in the same direction as the blade or the oppiset or doesnt matter same for bigger paddles? i have a protroll that i think might work well
  9. I am interested in trying cut bait or even the fake version next year i like to try ot learn a new technique every year. however i mostly fish the finger lakes does anyone every have much luck on fish other than salmon? I think the slow speed roll would be good for lakers but the target on Lake O is usually kings any of your finger lakes guys out there use cut bait. any of you lake o guys take a hit only to come up with a trout of some type. is there a smaller version that might appeal to LLs on seneca?
  10. i was on a charter in the keys as a kid we caught a bunch of dolphin when we go to the dock i asked the captin if he ever missed while he was putting fish on the spikes for pictures. he said never in 20 years and than 5 mins later missed and threw one off the dock his mate (who was his son) yelled "jump in" and he did. he got the fish back and while down there cleaned off some scum from the bottom of the boat we still have the pic of him standing next to my brother dripping wet holding a sock infront of the board of fish. my dad sent him an 8x10 a couple years later we were on his boat again and he had the pic displayed.
  11. early intervention it should mean somthing to you and a double meaning is always good
  12. i know the white sturgeon in the pacific jump and these sturgeon jump when not hooked my buddys pulled and dogged to the bottom I gotta imagine when they get over 100 pounds it has to be a decent fight even if they just try to hug bottom. i'm just glade the DEC continues to work these kind of restoration projects as well as the gamefish stockings it will only serve to improve the overall health of the waters a diverse eco system is a resilant ecosystem
  13. Tg8 how dare you dampin my optimisium with your science. still i know the stocking in the genny several years back had some good success my buddy caught one about 4 feet long a couple years back and he dec did a survey that showed good numbers surviving. I've seen them caught in the seneca river and i know onieda lake has a good population. Interestingly black lake has a small but very big (size) population and i recently discovered that they have lampreys in there thogh they dont seem to explode in numbers. so i still have hope for cayuga I know they had a huge year class of lampray this year hopfully they will get most of them in the traps and there wont be any flooding this spawning season
  14. i seem to remember sombody wanting to buy lamprys to sell for sturgeon bait if they truly do pray on those blood suckers these little guys could thrive in cayuga id love to see a viable sport (catch and release) fishery for them in new york in my life time people would be a huge draw for tourism and put more money in the conservation fund if cumo lets the dec spend it
  15. when i was a kid my parents took us on a faimlily trip to the 1000 islands i remember my dad drifting over 80-100 ft of water off the main channel and we would catch smallmouth till we limited out this was pushing 30 years ago before the clear water.
  16. always good to help when you see a boater in distress in my life ive given 3 tows and once went in to get a camp owner to help out a stranded boater on black lake (offered tow they declined but asked us to get owner). when my turn came and our engine stalled out 2 miles from the dock someone was nice enough to stop there day and tow us in so karma is definatly worth it.
  17. making me debate this sunday if i wanna take one last trip to the genny for kings or if wanna try canandagia finally i did watkins glen last winter and it was rewarding. so i'm looking forward to winter fishing on the chosen spot this year just dont know if i wanna start this weekend or in three weeks on my next trip

    Seneca perch

the challange is always fun and jumbo perch are a prize worth finding but part of the process is knowing what it take and what you have available and to find jumbos on seneca takes time and practice and I just dont have the time i've fished lake O bays since i was old enough to walk and so can usually find action i've only lived in teh finger lakes about 7 years so just dont have the time in on seneca. like justtracytrolling said some lake / species combos are tougher than others seneca perch is one of them there size is why its worth the work if you have the time to put in. if you dont than you gotta maximize what time you do have and that means change water or species i started trolling trout because seneca is close and convenient and that species in that lake has a better learning curve for the time i have

    Seneca perch

if your new to seneca perch and you dont have the time to fish regularly my advice is go to sodus i only get out on weekends and have spent many many hours of my life chasing perch and have at least the basics down. even though the last couple years i have concentrated on trolling trout. that being said i have never done well for perch on seneca and have come to the conclusion that seneca just has to big of a learning curve for perch for the limited time i have. i have gotten them on canandaguia as well as I-bay sodus portbay in lake O and cayuga. seneca is the only place i have never had a good perch day. I know there there i just dont have enough days to dedicate to that lake. if and when my scedual changes and i can fish a couple times a week i will definatly try the challange again but as i said at the begining best advice for perch on seneca drive north till you hit sodus
  20. small boats are nice for us poor folk pick your weather and do some research and lots of options are open to fish just gotta keep an open mind and a back up plan thats the nice part about living in new york if you get blown off a big lake there are lots of rivers and small waters to fish
  21. it can be done quite well its real shallow so you have to have a smaller boat fish the creek channels or the flats around the docs trolling works but if you have an electric its better. its a long drive for me now but used to do it a couple times before ice in every year.

    Seneca perch

a lot of the guys that really know seneca are not what you would call internet people so that contributes to the secrecy seneca is a tough lake for perch and it takes a lot of hours to be able to consistantly produce fish.
  23. in some areas of the country they are fished commercially for the eggs apparently there very marketable and have to be managed very carefully as there is a lot of poaching
  24. will a romer stick on the braid if you wanna do a double stack or will it slide up if you try to tighten the rod down? i will say i switched to 150lb power pro for my boards this year and I like it way better than the 300lb dacron i was using made me start to think about the riggers
