  1. Hunted my buddy's marsh this morning using layout blinds along the edge of the marsh. After placing goose and mallard decoys we began to have birds arriving in small groups. The birds were apparently feeding on grass along the edge of the marsh where rains had raised the water. We ended up shooting 6 geese, 4 mallards and 2 black ducks. Great to see them cup and come in feet down! Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  2. I also froze the heart and liver and have even taken the tongue on occasion. I got 4.2lbs of meat off the bones and few gallons of stock. I'll take the tallow off the top of the stock tomorrow and freeze it up with meat. No waste which I like. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  3. Great buck. They must have been on the move after the rain and wind as several nice bucks were taken yesterday. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  4. I like to cut up my deer whenever possible. I take my time but know I get every scrap of meat and it's all beautiful. Last week the morning after I shot a buck I skinned and boned out all but the front shoulders and put it in my refrigerator. Today I boned the front shoulders, trimmed it all and took off the silver skin, fat, blood spots, and grizzle. Then I cut it up into steaks, loins, tenderloins, sirloins, sirloin tips, jerky and grinding meat. I put it back in the refrigerator for a few more days of aging and will then vacuum seal it, label it and grind the burger mixing in some pork and fat. I'll make some into breakfast sausage, some into Italian sausage and leave some for plain burger. I even save all the bones and roast them and then boil them with onions, carrots, garlic and garden herbs. After picking the meat from the bones I freeze the stock and meat in gallon zip locks and can use it for an quick soup or stew. That's my afternoon project. I may not be fast but the results are worth my time. It generally takes me two or three sessions but that way I don't get too tired and careless. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  5. This week was more confirmation on why I love living in the Thousand Island region and am blessed to be retired and healthy. Monday night I harvested a buck with my muzzle loader. Being extremely warm I boned it out on Tuesday and put it in my garage refrigerator to age. Wednesday a buddy and I caught three walleyes on a quick evening trip on the SLR. This morning another buddy and I hit his marsh and shot 2 black ducks and 3 wood ducks. The regular deer season begins this Saturday but due to a rainy weekend I have a couple goose hunts scheduled with two more groups of friends. I am truly blessed to have a great group of friends and to live in an area with so many varied outdoor opportunities to enjoy. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  6. Great story Mike. I've seen fishers while deer hunting on two occasions. Very neat animals. I was once sitting on a log pile and I heard a rabbit squealing right underneath me. A moment latter it ran out and had a weasel attached to it's neck. I watch the tumbling struggle for 30 minutes after which the weasel dragged the rabbit back under the log pile. Sure wish I had a video of it. Those are the types of natural dramas that non hunters will likely never view. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  7. Nice job Landshark. Looks about like the one I shot. Good eats for sure. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  8. Went out this afternoon hoping to beat the rain. Saw a couple scrapes under apple trees on my way to an old tree stand. Sat in the stand for about an hour and a nail pulled out of the seat. That made me uneasy so I climbed down and went back by a green field near a bedding area near the rubs. Didn't have a good place to sit so I lay on the ground with my head on my back pack. After a short time a deer stepped out of the bedding area into the green field and was about 125 yards away facing me head on. I knew it was a basket 6 or 8 and soon another small spike stepped out. They were curious and moved closer and the spike moved to my left out of view. I had my gun resting on my knees and the larger buck moved closer and turned broadside. Although I was still on my back I was certain I had a great rest so took the shot at around 80 yards. Could hear the hit and saw the buck going away dragging a front leg. He went further than I anticipated but fortunately after a search found him piled up about 150 yards away. No blood trail but he was hit behind the shoulder and His chest cavity was full of blood. Always amazes me how far they sometimes go after a hard hit. I was fortunate to find him as it soon began to rain and thunder and lightning. Glad I didn't have to return in the morning to continue my search. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United

    Decent day

As Prof T said the SLR bite has slacked off. Not sure if they are headed toward Quinte or down river to Ogdensburg. Both areas have good fall fishing. Will likely make a run up to Mr Walleye's camp for some late season trophies sometime before ice up. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  10. . Nice shoot this morning. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  11. Nice hunt. We ended 3 birds shy of our three man limit. Great early flurry and then things slowed quickly. Tons of woodies that we had to pass on. A couple other groups of my friends I talked to also had successful openers. Hopefully this will be a start to a good season. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  12. Great job Gene. Still a good bite going on the SLR. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  14. Not for waterfowl. I think it's around $125 plus their duck stamp. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  15. Hunted the Canadian side of SLR this morning. Not much moving but we got 3 scalp and a mallard. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  16. 3 1/2" from a pump is probably similar to shooting slugs, uncomfortable in my opinion. I believe a quality auto properly maintained function fine even in frigid conditions. You definitely do need to keep them clean and use a light amount of the proper lube. I disagree that auto shooters flock shoot, you can do that with any type gun. I believe the lighter recoil allows me to recover more quickly for second and third shot. Bottom line is you need to know your gun and how to maintain it. With any type you choose the more you use it the better you will shoot it. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  17. 870 is probably foolproof but the recoil using 3 or 31/2" shells is brutal. I shot an 1100 for years and tried an 11 87 supermag and the 1187 was junk until Remington replaced it with a new gun. Bought a Winchester SX3 and it just plain works. The Remingtons needed frequent cleaning and often hung up in cold weather while the Winchester just keeps shooting. It also handles 23/4', 3' and 31/2" shells which make it a very versatile gun with interchanging chocks. I've taken woodcock, grouse, rabbits, pigeons, duck, geese, turkey, pheasant, and sporting clays with it. Used it heavily for 4 years and had no breakdowns with only occasional cleaning. Personally I see no need for 10 gauge and generally shoot 3" rather than 31/2" shells and seem to do pretty well. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  18. Hand another good hunt with The Alan Hunter clan. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  19. I use my 18' Lund Alaskan and usually look for <1 footers. The boat handles 3' or more but it's not comfortable and one footers can quickly turn into 3 footers. I really don't feel had I handicapped when out among the big boats. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  20. Hunted with Gabe, Eric, Prof t, and Bailey the wonder dog this morning. After the first two flocks landed about 150 yards away we made a quick move and ended up shooting 31. A good shoot but could have been better if our original set has been on the X. Certainly not complaining as its always great to spend a morning with a great group of guys. 21. Great shoot. They are fun to hunt, decoy well, fly hard, good dog work, no limits, and decent eating. Going to have to give them a try again soon as I haven't been in a couple years. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
  22. Hunted on a good friends farm this morning. Been hunting with Alan Hinter for 40 years! When his sons were starting out they tagged along and today we had 4 grandkids. Geese worked perfectly and we ended up with 26 and lots of great memories! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United

  24. Got after them this morning in St Lawrence county. Three of us ended shooting 35 geese. Didn't get a photo of all of them as one friend had to leave early and took 15 birds. This photo only shows 20 geese but one did have some bling. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  25. Great cast and blast. We use to shoot a lot of pigeons when there were still small dairy farms in Jefferson County. Best shoot we has was 108 birds. I really think they are great eating. Hope to do a goose hunt on Thursday followed by and evening of walleye fishing. Sent from my iPad using Lake Ontario United
