  1. I have used 3" and 3.5" and don't see a huge difference. I personally don't notice the recoil except when patterning loads. I ve killed them with 4, 5 and 6 shot and now generally use #5. As peviously stated, inside 30 yards it doesn't much matter. My wife flattens them with 20 gauge 6's. That said, premium shells may make a difference on occasion. If you chose to shoot at beyond 40 yards do your homework and find what works with your gun and chock. I also plan on trying the new Winchester Longbeard and I agree that a 20 yard shot is more thrilling than a 45 yarder.
  2. I tried Krings today and only caught few keepers. I talked to a former student who hit them yesterday but not today. Taped a bunch of holes and fished inside and outside the gapsbut could find many today. Not sure where to go tomorrow.
  3. Fished Loti this morning lts of dinks but not many to keep. I need to find some fish!
  4. Les, I also wish you a rapid recovery. I enjoy your post and our comunications. I remember fishing the Seneca derby about 40 years ago when was at Hobart and when I lived in Phelps as a kid. Quick rcovery and good fishing!
  5. I was at Kring's Point this afternoon and saw the ice breaker go by opening the channel. Didn't seem to have any effect on the ice near Krings. I only caught a few dinks in the gaps.
  6. Look good not hard to make. I've got some colored wire I'm goint to try to make up some.
  7. Took a drive over yesterday just looking. Still trucks and wheelers driving on the ice but ramp is rutted. They\re also driving on at Eel Bay and it looks like South Bay has access as well. With better weather coming I'll be posting a report this week.
  8. I 'm looking forward to some busy time starting Wednesday! Perch fishing the ice till the boat can be launched.
  9. Definately wouldn't try it on public land or anywhere you could possibly encounter another hunter. On private land it would be interesting to try. Also a safe way that would be fun to try would be with a camera during preseason but you'd risk spooking the birds. I sometimes will photgragh them in April. It's mch easier to gain access to photogph then to hunt. Here's one I took a few years ago.
  10. Nice Tom choo-choo! I've seen them strutting in the snow up here as well. I don't think May is going to have to enough days to do everything I will be wanting to do at that time. I enjoy chasing browns on the lake but also like turkey hunting, walleye, pike, crappie, perch and bullhead fishing. I would also like to try the Hudson for stripers and may even try to fit in a trip to my brothers at Cape Cod. Oh yea, also stream trout in the latter part of the month. I also may be headed to Florida to do some fishing with a buddy at the end of April. I wish May had more than 31 days!

I still try to get one a year if available as I haven't been as successful with the deer as in the past.
  12. I think I'm a little like the birds I've noticed this week, Optomistic for spring! I've seen robins, geese, turkey vultures, redwings and a rumors of a killdeer. Sooooooooo, I put new line and leaders on my brown trout rods, got out my spoons and stick baits, charged my boat batteries, cranked over my outboard and am about an hour away from being ready to launch on the big lake. Only problem is the lake may be a long way away from being ready for me.
  13. Wow I thought it was a strange post. I remember cathing many browns that year in March.

I use to do the same on Seneca Tribs. Justin, when I was at Hobart in the early 70's. It was fun and pretty productive. One spring I lived on stocked trout, smelt and a road kill deer!
  15. Like to get together sometime too.
  16. Justin, 6 weeks is to long to go with out fresh fish. Better make a run up and join me when the perch are on.
  17. Krings access is blocked beyond the launch. Not many people fishing it but there are some fishing in Goose Bay. Perch, bluegills and crappies are at LOTI but are spotty. I'm getting about a quarter pail in a morning of fishing. I tried Chippewa on Monday and nothing but dinks but a friend got some there on Sat. This morning the bite was an early one for me fishing perch and crappie and slowed after 9:30.

I've caught them in Milsite. I used 4 lb mono with a couple small gold hooks and a smallish Sweedish pimple to get to the bottom. Put a spike on the hooks for bait and use a light tip jip pole to see bites. I was fishing deep around 60-70'. Since I know the lake I knew where deep spots were and drilled numerous holes until I hit fish. Once found I fished two jigpoles and had decent action (guess I caught about 30) I haven't try it there in a few years but you're sparking my interest in trying. A graph would make it easier to find them but I was fishing blind but I am pretty familiar qith the lake structure.
  19. Sk8man, I guess if variety is the spice of life than mine is pretty spicy. I certainly do enjoy the area where I live abd have a great deal to be thankful for. I fished Chippewa Bay today and got nothing but dinks, Drove my wheeler all over looking for perch but couldn't find them. Kring's Point access is not good due to dredging at the ramp. Can't get out to the end as road is blocked. I guess you could get on with a wheeler or from Goose Bay. May try Loti again in the morning. Need to find a good perch bite.
  20. Perch seem to be starting to move into the shallower water in prepartion for the spring spawn. Most traditional spots have been late this winter but with longer days and warmer weather things will only improve. I'm planning on checking out Kring's Point, Eel Bay,Chippewa Bay, and Chamount. I caught some at LOTI last week and a friend got some at Chippewa yesterday. I plan on hitting the ice a lot this week. With the thickness of the ice we should have a prolonged spring ice opprotunity as long as the thawing shoreline makes access possible. Be careful near ramps as they are often the first place to break up. I'm sure we will hear of a vehicle going through as the thickness of the ice may give people false confidence. It's always a good idea to check the ice as it can go in a hurry. I was catching them from my boat at this time a couple years ago!
  21. Fished LOTI this morning. Ice is slush covered and has 6" puddles of water. The ramp is deeply rutted and I wouldn't be surprised is some vehicles had a difficult time getting off the ice. (I took my 4 wheeler) Fishing was slow and I kept 13 perch. Rain and snow with wind this morning. More snow tonight and cold temperatures the next couple days should tighten things up. Still lots of ice once you gain access.
  22. Not much available for hotels this time of year but Watertown isn't really too far. I just called Chamount Hardware and they thought the ice was mostly clear with some drifting. They are a good source for bait and fishing information and are located right on the main drag of Chamount.
  23. LongLine, Thanks I needed to see some hopeful photos.
