The smallmouth was a shade over 22" but had super girth. I've actually boated longer ones but never one that approached it's mass. It was extremely dark in color and did look like a grouper or big black sea bass. One more year and it may have overtaken the state record of 8.4 lbs. I guess the smallies really are thriving on the gobies!

I spent an incredible day on Lake Ontario with Kelly Page and Pete Stratton. We were trolling deep diving cranks off boards. Fished from 7:00-2:00 and went 13 for 15 with two lost behind the boat. Fish ranged from 6.5 to 10.5 pounds and we also caught a 7.5 pound smallmouth ( the largest I've ever seen boated) We kept three and release ten. We had 3 doubles and ended the day with a quad although we landed the first before the forth one hit. We caught them on TD 11, Reef Runners, and Trolls To in a variety of colors and no I'm not going to share the location as I've been sworn to secrecy. I'll post more photo but here is a hog of a smallmouth.

Nice fish Justin, I have a small lake about a mile from my home that has tigers in it . Since there is a 10hp limit on the launch I seldom fish it as I would have to use my Gheenoe with a six hp. I have caught a few casting f18 Rapala and through the ice ( I caught two small ones through the ice last winter). Maximum depth is about 35 feet and it's basically a bowl with a few weed beds stretching out to 15 feet. What trolling strategy would you suggest? Send me a pm if you want. -

Crossing into Canadian waters
Kevin J Legg replied to Up-trim's topic in Musky, Tiger Musky & Pike (ESOX)
Canada customs number is 888-226-7277. As I understand as long as you don't anchor or go to shore you can report in by phone. US customs 888-523-2628. You will need names, birthdays, and perhaps passport numbers for all in the boat as well as boat registration numbers. -

Gator, I sure am blessed to live in a great area for outdoor enthusiasts and being retired am able to take full advantage of it. With Lake Ontario, the St Lawrence River, the Indian River Lakes, the Salmon River, the Adirondacks, and the Bay of Quinte all within an hour and a half drive I have world class potential for many species of fish and game. Having lived here for nearly forty years, I've fortunately mastered many of the techniques for a successful outing. Nice to hear that your daughter is interested in sharing time with you.

I made a quick evening run to an Indian River Lake last night to try the crappies. I found a bunch off a weed bank in about 12 fow and caught one nearly every cast. All were caught on jigs and Powerbait minnows on a 1/16 jig head most hit it on the fall. Caught all 25 in around a half hour and they were still pounding when I left.

I caught a couple large pickerel ice fishing this winter at Henderson. When I filleted them I was expecting them to be like a pike but I too found they are different in bone structure. That said, when I cooked up a batch of fish, my wife rated them ahead of everything else. Once you learn how to fillet pike they are also great fish to eat. Handled correctly, cleaned correctly and cooked correctly nearly everything that I keep is delicious.

The halibut I brought back from Alaska is hard to beat but the Black Sea bass from Cape Cod are also very good. I give away a great of filleted fish and often have fish fries at our church. Most people can't tell the difference between any of it when it's cut into fingers, bread and fried! Sometimes I keep them separated and poll the eaters to see which they liked best. In my opinion perch are tough to beat!
