Unless you know someone with a cottage along the shoreline there is little public access. At the north (PennYan) end most people go onto the ice at Indian Pines Park (a mile or so out of town Route 54A on your left...there is an ice cream place near the turn - follow the winding road to the pavilion area. I don't know whether the Branchport arm is frozen it often isn't but if so you can park at Keuka State Park (also just off 54A). At the Hammondsport end the parking was very limited last time I went in the past. Maybe near the motel? Maybe someone who has been there recently can pipe in.....but I wouldn't hold your breath as the parking there has always been "coveted"

Yup the couple pickerel I got the other day did exactly that and there was no doubt they were going to take it like you mentioned....the flashers do add a whole cool dimension to ice fishing don't they? -

WTG Mike. Just an FYI but they don't always hit when the lines meet The trick is to time it right so that when they meet you are looking at your line and rod tip rather than the flasher screen....takes some practice and "willpower" The "lookers but not biters" will drive you nuts....Les

Try to balance your jig box with an open lid on your knee while changing jigs I can't even imagine what it would have been like with a foot of snow on the ice....luckily it was bare.

A lot of those dudes at the northeast side were Menonites as were most of the people fishing on Keuka yesterday and they had what looked like all brand new equipment including power augers.... A couple guys I saw cutting holes in close today with an axe....tough going in 10 inches of ice -
I just returned about an hour ago. Fished the east side from 8 -47 ft of water jigging. Only managed a few perch and one pickerel. Three guys I talked to on the way out caught a dozen or so early in the AM then they shut off. A lot of huts but most of the folks that quit when I did did about the same as me. The perch seemed to be hitting minnows today and in fact the perch I cleaned Saturday all had either partially digested minnows or nothing at all. 90 percent were females too. The water is crystal clear and I could see bottom clearly in 25 ft. There were quite a few huts out there way north of me.

Sounds as though you had a fun day and plenty of action. I heard that they've been getting some good pike there too....see any evidence of that? Les

Mike -Sweet! You confirmed my hunch from today too that we were fishing too far north and not nearly deep enough today...I'll bet those kids will remember that day for a long time maybe forever! Keep up the good work! Les -

I think Otisco would be a great venue. It is the only Finger Lake that I have never fished....I'm up for it....would be a nice get together...summertime camping and trolling would be great. Les -
My son and I fished it today from 6 ft. of water to 22ft. The dinks were at the22 ft level and instead of following my intuition and going deep for the big guys I opted to try a bunch of previously successful places from the past in shallower. ....mistake. ... a couple keeper perch and one decent pickerel (fun jigging on 4 lb test) that my son wanted so we kept it....not a very impressive day and I think I'll stick to Honeoye and Canandaigua for now.....here is what the ice looked like facing south from the park. -
Nice going Bondouley - You are a lucky dude to have your girlfriend ice fish with you....my wife did too when we dated until we got married...that was it for the fishing I guess we should have fished Honeoye today Keuka (Penn Yan end) didn't treat us real great....vast wastland today. -

Running stick baits off boards

I've always used 1 or 2 large split shot about 3 ft. up from the jointed sticks. It takes them down a little and also keeps weeds off the lure itself. The jointed Rapala's (J-9's and 11's )seem to handle higher speeds better on my boat while the solid bodies seem good even with the split shot at slower speeds -
Hey guys I just went by Butler Road a little while ago on the way back from town and there were two fire trucks and all sorts of rescue folks there. The shore ice is all broken up....not sure what either happened or is going on but a whole bunch of huts out there entered the lake at that point and is now open water.Les
