It is during the NON-FLEA season but not DURING flea season. No fleas on copper and copper reaches greater depth easier. On the downside it can kink much more easily too if you aren't careful with it. I think that 7 strand stainless wire is superior to both of them most of the time and if weights are used can get down to greater depths than either are capable of for less footage out.

Setup/ Leadcore questions
Sk8man replied to howboutthosemets's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Oh and should I mention.....back in the early eighties during the ESLO Spring Derby my fishing buddy and I had a ritual of the first guy to lose a fish had to chug a beer no matter what time of day etc. Well....I lost one right as we started the second day at about 6 :30 AM or so. I hadn't eaten breakfast that day either . I chugged the beer but that is the only time I ever felt queazy on the water... and it was the last time I suggested the ritual. Moral of the story: Don't drink beer before 7 AM or on an empty stomach OR think it might be the other guy that always loses -
You can also use inline sinker (few ounces) where the leader attaches to the main line.... or use a good sized duolock snap on the split ring (suspended) of your swivel and hang the sinker from that. (I'm assuming a short leader with this setup allowing you to net the fish with the sinker still attached) but for longer leaders you can unsnap the weight on the way in from the duolock snap if you use the duolock setup or else hand line in the rest of the way. Been doing it for years and it works.

Thanks again Flyrod2 ...for the report and your efforts.

That must be one heck of a year class of landlocks down there too because they look like the bunch of "cookie-cutter" ones we got a couple months ago there. They're a lot of fun.

And.....don't mention too much about flare guns because Emperor Cuomo might decide we can only have 1 cartridge

Way to go Sean...nice box of fish too!

I don't think you'll be getting a whole lot of arguments on the expensiveness part of it

It was the same way last year at the north end....it took forever (and why?)

The earlier point made about the depth of freeboard (sides of the boat) is very important as well as the design of the back splash itself. I used to get my feet wet riding on a friends big Grady because it had panels (or little doors) on the back of the transom deck that allowed water to come through big time when it was rough despite making it easy to wash down and keep clean etc. In my current boat the freeboard is closer to my waist and I've never had a drop of water in the boat from waves or from the back splash....much more comfortable ride.

I wouldn't try them with salmon though. I used to have the salmon knock the crap out of my small/medium dodgers and fly on lake O in the late summer and they would release with no fish and after awhile I figured it out they were hitting the dodger itself so I rigged a hook on one and got one of them. It wasn't worth doing a lot because eventually it tangled in the line....but interesting never the less.

Kicker motor on a trophy 2002WA or similar boat. Good idea?

Zack: I haven't been there for a week or so but the fellow who runs things there told my son last week that it is open until April 15th. I doubt if the ice has formed much in that particular spot as it gets pretty hammered from both north and south. I spoke with a couple guys in a bass boat there last week or so and they were perch fishing and didn't do real great. The north end ramp and the canal are frozen up again as of this morning when I went by there.

Even scarier was the item on Fox News today. Apparently the government has domestic drones the size of hummingbirds (or smaller) that can lock in on individual computers from above and monitor transactions of the computer user complete with facial recognition of the person and what they are viewing on screen. I have no idea how from a practical standpoint this is accomplished but that it what was said.

Winter boredom/ product idea sharing
Sk8man replied to ioiosoiwork's topic in Finger Lakes Discussion
Quite some time ago I got tired of looking into my plano boxes and other tackle boxes each time I wanted to change lures so I went to Walmart and bought my solution to the lure searching and inconvenience problem...here it is....look closely at the rear right and left side of the boat on the bimini top supports (they hold 200 plus lures) ...a word of caution...use miniature bungees to secure them It works out great when fishing alone top up or down P.S. They are the foam things used by tubers and kids cut into the size to fit my needs -
It should be noted that you can also enclose an open bow with a canvas "dodger" or forward shelter. That was the absolute single best investment I have made in my entire lifetime thus far. It turned my 13 ft Whaler into a Lake Ontario boat as well as a "reading area" and play area for GI Joe's when my kids were young

DOWN RIGGER TROLLING QUESTION.......
Sk8man replied to finnlander's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
Hey Tim I hope you didn't think I was referring to your comment ....I fully agree with what you said. -
Cool! Looks like as of today on the news that Feinstein's idiocy is going down the drain. They don't feel there is enough support to do anything with it (less than 40 of the necessary 60 votes:>).

DOWN RIGGER TROLLING QUESTION.......
Sk8man replied to finnlander's topic in Questions About Trout & Salmon Trolling?
I know the "purists" out there will disagree with me but if you experiment you can run just about anything with anything if you do your homework and keep track of the data and make changes as necessary. There is no "miracle" setup... sometimes its just the fact that it is something different being presented. Sometimes things work great for a short time and then....nothingI I was told by a bunch of fishermen friends that lake trout would never hit the little peanut behind a set of flashers back in the late seventies too....or that they wouldn't hit flies behind a dodger on the Finger Lakes (only the Great Lakes salmon) yet both produced some of my best fish back then. It's still a matter of finding active, hungry or aggressive fish and giving them something to think about in terms of either a "vulnerable" or "provocative" target prey. Sometimes its that "oddball" setup that sorts you out from the other contestants in derbies too. MY motto: "Keep experimenting...that's what its all about anyway"
