  1. Unit sold. Replaced with X4. Initial testing shows no interference from auto-pilot and appears to work with Humminbird FF. Further testing needed to be absolutly sure.
  2. Very sorry to hear about your misfortune. There doesn't seem to be anything we peons can do in this situation other than to stay on our side of the border. Politically/diplomatically our government needs to turn up the pressure before any progress can be made. If the laws needed are not written correctly to enable our country to act in a similar manner towards other country's citizens, I'd like to see the bluff card played by our government officials. I'm old enough to remember Russia's attitude to the rest of the world during the "cold war era". Krueschev was a master at "bluffing" and Russia got a lot of what it wanted during that period of time. What goes 'round/comes 'round is my attitude of choice. When the dust settles, a reasonable solution will be reached. Until then, our country needs to play too!
  3. I live in Niagara Falls, NY and usually launch at the Fort. Other times at Wilson. I have possessed a Canadian fishing license for many, many years. My fishing exploits have always ignored the border, since I'm licensed in both countrys. Unless I learn this policy has been rescinded, looks like I will have to monitor the GPS and stay out of Canadian waters. However, in the river you never know for sure which country you're in at many locations. The story is that the boundary was formed by floating a barrel down the river to mark the border's location. Therefore, some VERY nearshore waters on our side are Canadian and some on their side are American. Very perplexing! I've never seen their guys patroling the River, but what if they start? Anchoring is rarely done by most, but what assurances do I have that I won't be hasseled if I decide to? Come January, if this reporting situation is not worked out in the fisherman's favor, Ontario has lost a non-resident license sale. I wonder if this attitude is part of the French/Canadian wish to secceed from Ontario. Fishing for me is for fun and relaxation. This fiasco will keep me on "our" side of the boundary. It's just a matter of targeting American waters ONLY, and we have plenty of good waters to fish in.
  4. Looking for $325 plus shipping or RO. Used intermittengly for two years. Incompatable with my new Garmin TR1 Gold autopilot. Both systems work great seperately, but loose Moor readings when autopilot is on. Am changing to a Fish Hawk to try to stop the interference. Reply here or call me at 716-282-5278.
  5. Got them today, Troutman. And they look good. Thanks for the speedy shipping/processing.
  6. Custom canvas made by Nauti-Girl. 773-6291. 1731 Huth Rd, Grand Island NY. The're close to you and do quality work. I'm very pleased with the canvas they made for my 18' Lund. Worth a phone call.
  7. I have a Moor subtrol unit in Niagara Falls, NY. Considering selling as having interference problems because of new auto-pilot installation. If you're still looking and want to inquire, call me at 716-282-5278 (Don).
  8. E-mail me at [email protected] Want to order 4 and need to set up payment and ship-to information. I live in Niagara Falls, NY.
  9. I have a sub-troll and depend on it a lot. However, after getting TR1 Gold auto-pilot installed for my kicker motor, I've discovered that the two systems are not compatable. With the AP turned on, the sub-troll does not give readings. Works great when used by itself. Trying to get both to work at the same time is a work in progress. Others have had the same situation, I've discovered. Did not know this at time of AP purchase. Some boats have not had the problem. Have not heard of this interference problem with the depth raider. Without AP, either system will help with catch rate.
  10. I cut off a 3 ft. section of 3 inch schedule 40 pvc pipe and used pipe mounting clamps to secure it to the sidewall of the boat from the floor up to the gunnel. Have one on each side. The net is standing upright, is easily removed, and the strength is enough to allow me to run hard without damaging the net's handle. My boat layout forced me to place them in the back corners to have access into sidewall storage lockers, but would have preferred them to be mounted more forward, away from the fighting area. Materials available at Lowe's, Home Depot, etc. and should cost about $20.
  11. Got some experiments done this afternoon. Temporarily connecting the A/P to a different battery got the interference corrected, but lost subtrol readings after 60'. Will wait to make the connection change permanent until I can determine how to get deeper readings on the subtrol. Also, the subtrol readings I got today are suspect (to me) because they changed frequently and indicated a very low lure speed no matter what direction I traveled. Expecting underwater currents that affect lure speed, changing direction and surface speed didn't make enough difference. Things are still suspect! More experimentation is needed. Thanks for giving me some insight with possible corrections, Home Office. I'll let you know if I ultimately get the "bugs" out.
  12. Thanks for the reply, Home Office. Could be a problem I won't be able to correct. If moving the A/P power source to a different battery doesn't stop the interference, sounds like a waste of time and money to try the shielding and/or ferrite beads. Will try the battery source option and test it on the water later today. Will also try moving the Moor power source to a seperate battery. Also will experiment with placement of the remote cable. Maybe if I route it along the port side of boat there will be enough distance to eliminate the interference. I'm not optimistic, but hopeful. I'm not looking foward to always having to choose to use only one or the other. I like both units and prefer not to give up on the Moor at this time, because the A/P is definitely staying.
  13. I have an aluminum hull. The subtrol will not give readings when the kicker motor autopilot is functioning. With autopilot off I have readings. I will try connecting the Moor to a different battery to see if that solves the problem. Ferrites beads on the subtrol antenna cable or sheilding of all wires of the autopilot system have been suggested by Moor, but not sure they would correct the problem. And the Garmin rep I spoke to didn't have a solution either; he never heard of that problem before. Anyone have a similar problem? What was your "fix"? Shielding all autopilot wiring will involve removing the boat's flooring to gain access to the gyrocompass wiring. The cable for the remote is the only wiring anywhere near the subtrol wiring or antenna cable. Would shielding only the remote cable correct it? The autopilot wiring to the battery has excess wire looped in coils and both it and the control unit are mounted close to the main battery. There is no other location for the control unit because of the hydraulic hoses. I really need electrical interference help. I will be out of town for a few days so will check back when I return. Thanks in advance to those who offer advice.
  14. The coated cable creates a lot of blowback. 10 lb balls drop back a lot, but 20 lb sharks don't. Use the heaviest weights your riggers can handle to reduce the effect.
  15. State Park is best for launching. I observed for WHI team on Saturday. Fishing the bar area, we encountered several areas of heavy floating debree, watch your lines. Weather reports are not good for early week fishing, suggest you wait for weekend or later.
  16. You can proceed at full throttle all the way if you choose to. A compass read of N-0 degrees will take you there (or use GPS). The can sits in about 50 FOW. Beyond the can (N), the bottom will drop VERY rapidly to 100 FOW with slower increases in depth thereafter. The Canadian border lies about a mile W of red can. Be alert for logs/debree at this time of year, you could find a big tree almost anywhere on your way out and in the red can area.
  17. LED lights worn on your forehead or clipped to your hat brim work great for rigging in low light, or searching dark compartments for things, even when doing repairs/replacements in those dark crevasses that hold the wiring etc. Plus they don't impact the driver's vision when you face the stern of the boat. I always keep one in the glove box of my boat. Purchase at sporting goods or hardwaqre stores for $20 or less.
  18. I use a Moor sub-trol and find the speed .4 slower than on my gps. Like Tim says, repeatability is the big factor. Down speed is important to me because of the sub-surface current variations on lure speed. Knowing the lure speed eliminates the "dead time" of trolling when the lure is going too fast or too slow because of current changes on lure action. Duplication of successful speed creates more hits, and down speed is more important than surface speed.
  19. WNYTony Your boat/motor size is a MAJOR limiting factor for fishing the bar. The inshore fishing in the Niagara region for trout and salmon can be good in the spring when the fish are in shallow. At Fort Niagara, the green can sits about a mile from shore at the river mouth. The river bottom depth comes up to 18 feet or so in this area and stays there for several miles out. On a perfect weather day (light or no wind) you will be safe in green can area. At Wilson or Ollcot, a mile from shore will put you put you into 50+ feet of water, where you would like to go for these fish species as the fish move out as spring progresses (the red can at the river mouth is 4 miles out and sits in 50 FOW-just before the 100FOW dropdown- Not a safe place for your boat/motor combination in any weather because of distance and travel time to shore). Wilson/Ollcot area is safer for you and probably more productive as spring matures. Summer fishing will require deeper waters most times, but your boat/motor combination are too small to venture out there with. Summer fishing is in 200++++FOW (translate 1-12miles from shore). From late August on you can find trout and salmon (mostly) moving back to near shore waters where you could use your boat again. To sum it up, you will be limited to near shore waters during March, April, and early May for spring season and mid August on for fall season. Summer season will require you to fish for other species, unless you are ready to get a bigger boat/motor set-up.
  20. Near shore web cams to view current Lake O conditions: 1. OutdoorsNiagara.com- a webpage with a link to a webcam at 4 Mile Creek (4 miles East of Niagara River) 2. http//www.overboardcharters.com/Weather.htm- a webcam view of Lake O at Olcott (18 miles East of Niagara River. Both give good views of the lake.
  21. I agree with Gill-T. For the swivel aspect, I think that is most critical. A rounded end on the swivel/snap is important to me. Using black rather than silver has been more productive for me. Will be trying red this year to see if it makes a difference. A swivel at the lure appears too bulky to me, so I use a snap instead. Several feet ahead of the snap, I use a barrel swivel in the main line to minimize line twist if the lure becomes fouled causing spinning of the lure. IMO the smallest swivel possible should be used as this is somethind else the fish can key onto. It doesn't have to go through the rodtip eye, because you have up to a rod length of line from it to the lure, but size does matter (strength and visability).
  22. If the booth is not manned, it's OK to just launch. Entrance to the launch area passes a booth- if unmanned, drive past, go down hill and turn left for the better launch. Not as complicated as it sounds. 4 Mile is a campground. Bring your own accomodations. Hook-ups available for RVs and motor homes. Lakeview Motel, located on Lake Road between 4 Mile and Wilson, has accomodations for rent. Many fishermen use it. Can accomodate your trailered boat. 716-791-8668 for details. Ontario House, in Youngstown, 716-219-4073, has rooms for rent that many LOC fishermen use. Just outside of Fort Niagara, and across street from entrance to Petroy Marina. Caveat: no parking for a trailered boat on property. There is a village lot not too far away that you could use for free, but it is on a village street and unsupervised. Any other way I can help? Call me at home 716-282-5278- Don Supon in Niagara Falls, NY.
  23. The $10 is launch fee. The gates to the park are not manned at this time of year, but expect someone to collect launch fees @ 5 AM. during the Derby. Border Patrol and Park Police monitor the park, and park hours are dawn to dusk. You will not be able to leave your trailer / vehicle there overnight without getting a ticket. Youngstown has a village ramp next to Petroy's. Meant for small boats. No parking nearby for your trailer, but some vehicle spots on first-come basis. Trailer parking located at village lot 1/2 mile away. I've seen vehicles and trailers parked at Petroys, but suspect they belong to Petroy customers. Youngstown is a small community, with all available waterfront developed. Food and lodging is available nearby. No water access upstream of Petroy's, developed to river mouth (3/4 mile). Some LOC fishermen stay at 4 Mile Creek State Campgrounds, but it has no launch or docks. They trailer back and forth to Fort Niagara or Wilson daily. Wilson has a NYS Park (Tuscaroura) with a launch into 12 mile creek. State launch fees apply. A good ramp for big/small boats, but dawn to dusk operation also. Food and lodging in Wilson, but limited and 2 mile drive. Ollcott has a town launch (fee) and is 18 miles from the river. Excellent for large boats. Not familar with food/accomodations. All three areas have excellent fishing. Offshore fishing starts in Canadian waters and progresses east towards Ollcott and beyond as the season advances. Give Josh a call for details if you want to be close to the Niagara.
