  1. When you guys go out the coast gurad station how far off shore are you? I know the sand bar is over there but I don't want to bang up my prop. We always go out of Margaretta.
  2. I second that you need more prop but I would definitely NOT re-prop because you need to troll slower. Has your boat always ran at 4000 rpm? If it just started doing this there is something else wrong. I don't like trolling with my big motor mainly because it loads up a little and like to keep the hours off the motor. Run tolling socks if you can't get down slow enough. I would start with a larger sock and work your way down but do not get the biggest sock you can find. When I trolled with a friend he made his own socks using 5 gallon buckets and running a threaded rod thru the bucket (handles won't hold up to trolling)
  3. Alright sweet. I didn't reall want to spend the money on a kicker bracket this year mainly because I want to add the plate for easy removal.
  4. I am itching something terrible to go out right now but have to get my boat together first not to mention its a 2 hour drive for me. How big is your boat, beam and length?
  5. Here is what the 7.5 Johnny looks like on the back of the boat. My grandfather told me it was a short shaft if he remembered correctly. If I measured correctly (from the bottom of the block to the prop shaft) it is 25" shaft. I guess I lucked out with this one and don't need a kicker bracket. These side by side comparisons make my big motor look like a 300! haha
  6. Is there an online guide of how much weight makes a spoon sink a certian amount along with line length at 2mph. I have a Precision Trolling book that is great but doesn't have any spoons. I like to flat line spoons with split shots to get them down a little but am unsure how much I need for certian depths. I can stack on my down rigger but would like more than 1 spoon in my spread.
  7. According to NOAA there should only be 1-2'ers. It will be an off shore breeze so it won't get too rough. http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... &map.y=105
  8. I need a vacation home in Florida...Deep Sea in the winter and trout, walleye and bass in the spring summer and fall....
  9. Seems like some are catching them between the channel and maxwell but I am not sure. If you can take a look at the instant fishing reports. There are some guys doing well and they mention an area or 2. When we go out we use boards with cranks and spoons, never really had a lot of luck in the bay.
  10. There are 2 main launches. 1 being public and the other being the coast guard. I am not sure if they allow launching out of coast guard during the main season but as of right now people are putting in there it is on wickham blvd. all the way at the end. The other public launch is at the end of Margaretta rd. called Margaretta launch. Beware this is a steep launch and will need 4wd to get out of it. You might be able to launch at Arnie's marina but will have to pay. Here is the address for Margaretta: 7315 New York 14, Sodus Point, New York Here is the address for Coast guard launch: 8597 Wickham Boulevard, Sodus Point, New York
  11. 3 years ago there was a bass tournament up by chaumont bay. Coast guard was out rescueing bass boats in 6' surf. We were out on my father-in-law's ocean boat but were tucked into a cove where the waves were much smaller. I have braved 6'ers in my boat but that was because of a freak rain storm and the bow is about 6' tall.
  12. Not to hi-jack the thread but I see a lot about these "Snake Head Fish" anyone caught any? I have never seen one other than pictures online. Are they in the big O?
  13. I have to admit the "Spotted Gay pride" copper blank made me laugh and think it might be worth a troll.
  14. haha I figured most would say its comes down to water color and clarity. I was just looking for a general consensus on color. I have some reef runners that I might give a try I hear they have a nice presentation.
  15. How would you pick it up? Is there any spikes like catfish? I have never seen one to know. They look harmless but I am sure there are places you don't want to put your hands.
  16. I believe you are correct they are bottom feeders. I heard of people catching them trolling in the St. Lawrence but none in the lake. I would love to catch one and get a couple photos. I don't think you are aloud to bring them in the boat.
  17. Thanks, I generally like to run a deep diver spoon combo. Anyone ever tried this with trout and salmon? I use it quite consistantly with walleyes. The spoon acts a lot like a flasher but has a hook on it.
  18. So here are my spoons, if you guys could let me know which colors you guys see results with it would be much appreciated. Most of my spoons I won in a raffle so I doubt they will be what I want. Here are the stick baits I have but generally only use the Thunderstick Jr. Black prism for walleyes. These are the rapalas and smithwicks I also have good results with walleyes. 1 bait that would produce more than any other is no longer made. I tried writing the company and they have none back stocked and can't find anyone that has any in stock anymore. I used to have 5 or 6 of them but now only have 1. They came back out with the color but it is nothing like it used to be. I might learn how to paint just so I can make a few more.
  19. I use the rapala glass minnows and storm black prisms in various sizes for walleyes will they produce results when fishing browns? Also what about smithwicks in black back/silver body and blue back/silver body?
  20. I ended up using my circular saw. I cleaned up the angle with my palm sander and used 10" pine board.
  21. I would be interested in one. How does shipping work?
  22. Name: Chas Brightman Location: Lindley NY Home Port: Sodus Bay/Chaumont Bay Boat Name/Type: Sea Mist / 1981 23' Proline I fish for: Mostly walleye but try my luck with trout and salmon ================== I figured if I was going to lurk around here I might as well intorduce myself. I work in Horseheads NY live in Lindley. My father and I used to fish out of Sodus for trout when I was a kid but haven't in quite a few years. My grandfather, father, and I are going to start fishing hard during late March and April for trout and salmon. After that the boat goes up to Chaumont bay for walleyes. If anyone is looking to go fishing out of Souds on weekends during April I will be around! I have been thinking of dropping the boat in the past week after seeing all the success already. I will post a pic of the boat if I can find one.
  23. Sorry to resurrect an old post but I need some canvas work done and was wondering if the above mentioned still does work? I live just south of watkins glen but fish out of sodus so any where in between would work. Thanks, Chas
