  1. :geek: I had the special opportunity to take my little brother Rick, and his son Brian trolling for salmon.... They both have never trolled up an Atlantic, so I had to truck them down to ol reliable..... converse... We set up our usual 6 rod spread with divers, lead core and riggers with sliders. Brian started the day and we pick Away at the small fish laker and salmon during the morning. Surface temp was 64 and 69 by end of day. Key temp was 54 at 55 and it broke colder from there... We set riggers at 55 and 45. Slide diver out 180 to get em down to 50. It got hot... At 10'we found a pod of fish between garden and thompsons. After set I g back up from doubles I had a fish take a three amigos custom Raz mpg taped spoon........ Out of my hand as I was putting the slider on! I was pissed cause I thought I popped it..... But as I held the line a huge salmon rocketed out of the water from the 45 foot set and I had him I Hand! I quickly dropped the line and picked up the rod and handed it to Rick.... Who has been watching his son catch fish all morning not touching a rod yet.. I told him real, tighten it, hold rod tip up and hold on! The fish Leaped again at 70 ft back and slapped back in the lake and we knew he had a hog... The fish them ran deep and stayed down..... And pulled and pulled............ And pulled... Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz Slowed the boat down, picked up the slide divers and other rigger.... Hold on.... More line going out.... 7 min of the fight... Middle of he battle.. Caught a fish in middle of sequence, no need to reset rod:) http://youtu.be/viS9Xx7IKns Like me I get on radio and tell super cab we got a pig on... 10 min now... We troll from thompsons to picket dragging this bastard at 1.4 mph and Rick can't get him off bottom.... We make a full turn and head back to thompsons win him still out 100+++ haven seen him for 20 min but we know from the early leaps he is not a laker  After super cab and 5 other boat troll by watching us... We are working him into the warmer water at the surface, he is 20 ft down 50 ft back.... We start rolling film... At 11. See below for a quick video.. I get the ego slider out and mount the merc.... Spread out over the motor between my legs Rick pulls Jaws into the 68 deg surface water... That poops him out good and we were able to handle him into the net.... 37 min I tot the fight Jaws is OURS. Yes, Dave we got him... He is deep and dark and has a 1" Kype just like the Jaws we fought in that local before.... I have to post some pics now, cause the best fun was watching Rick try to wrestle his pissed off 27" 8.8 lb salmon into letting take his picture... :geek: Wow look at that Jaw Boy he's girthy We know you like him, but get a room. There ya got him back into position.. But hold him out for a Reelax style pic! Wait can't get him in the frame! Now ya got him... Where the tail? Oops There ya go again... Give up.. Short YouTube video of net job. Seemed to have pulled a vocal chord when I lifted the net to get him into the boat.. http://youtu.be/w5UAfgQOBW0 We filleted this fish, 2 nice 3 lb slabs.... Took carful Measurement at 27" and 17" girth. Weighted in at 8.8 lb on my stingy Berkeley digital scales.. Rick will have a replica mount done of this really nice fish... I am blessed to have help him with it... Being over a lb and a half bigger than my personal best and truly a fish I have been hunting for over a year... It was a special day we will never forget. This fish has never been touched by a lamprey... A testimony to the efforts of the lamprey reduction program.

  7. When you are fishing really skinny water... (have caught salmon in 3fow)
  8. Also same as Nissan.... Merc , Nissan and Tohastu all the same under 30hp. Bought a 9.8hp Nissan 3 seasons ago and love it.... Elec start is key to keep electronics charged during a 12hr troll....
  9. Thanks for the updates and pics... I was supposed to join a group heading out tomorrow, but we bagged it a couple of weeks ago when it was locked up tight... Has anyone fished out of the State Launch yet?? Now it looks like Oswego around the 25th for another trip... Hope the bite is on...
  10. I bought the 9.8hp version Nissan with elec start and long shaft 3 seasons ago for my LUND 21foot Sportfisherman. Love the motor and with ezsteer and a troll master setup it is PERFECT. Have never had any problems with this motor yet and put 250hrs per year on it.
  11. If you can read the depth of the probe real time on your sonar maybe not??
  12. Hope it works out for you. I have a 9.8 Nissan which is same motor and I love it...
  13. Depends on the fish... 30 seems heavy for me... I know 10lb works fine on Browns and Atlantics... I think you will need more with Kings, maybe 30, but that still seems heavy.
  14. Was out on one of the twin 24 foot crestliners from Vermont that day I think we went 4 for 6 on browns, biggest around 10lbs. Saw you guys out there and wondered how you did. Tough bite last week, seems it is still early in Fairhaven for the Browns to hit heavy... Need warm water, we found 47 deg water in a couple of spots, and that was where the action was..
  15. Homemade peanutbutter crackers with salt side out is a good luck charm on my boat... And absolutly NO bananna's!!
  16. Last week in Fairhaven... this worked ok....8-14fow riggers at 5ft with spoons, black and silver. planer boards pulling storm, yozuri and rapala sticks, blue and yellow worked best. 2.1-2.4mph or even slower if you can. Long setbacks, 150ft on planer and 80 on riggers... Hope this helps... Matt
  17. I think flowing water backwards thru a set of gills is like choking a fish. I like to crank the flow in the live well and put them in and regain strength in there under control. Once they re-liven up a bit I then put them back in the lake once they can swim out of my hand... Sometimes 15min in a live well will do wonders...
  18. Thanks for the word Gill, we picked at 3pm when it picked up, had a long ride back into little sodus... Looks like the guts were over 50 by the time we landed.. Only 1 brown landed today, hardest 4 lb gush I ever worked for. Here is a video in the shoot.... http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx38/reelax/IMG_1398_zpscda0b03a.mp4 May not get out tomorrow, so we ended up pulling out the white flag. Before we picked up:) Fish on!!'
  19. Got an invite from Mike Dostie, Scott Baker and Mike Smith to join a 2 boat crew over in Fairhaven this week. Arrived to 22mph winds from the west at 1pm. By 3pm it had died down some and we headed out. Setup just outside the shoot headed east in 8-15 FOW. Ran mostly stick baits with a couple spoons mixed in. Had 5 releases and boated 2 browns, the bigger around 5 lbs. With surface temps around 43-44 looks like the real fast bite hasn't started yet. At about 8pm we headed back to the cabin. The sunset was very spectacular with the sun setting over the big O.. Back out this mornin, looks like fishable conditions for the next 3 days Atleast! Will update as the week goes on.... Fishon! Day 2 under way still slow. Need sun to warm water... Only 42 this mornin. More later... Good news we found 47 deg water in front of the shoot, and this is what you get! (9+ lb brown) Video http://i739.photobucket.com/albums/xx38/reelax/IMG_1340_zps25696e29.mp4 10pm 7oz brown 10 lb laker More later, still Fishin... All Vermont boys present.... Dinnertime Blow day today. 22 to. 45 knt winds! Got out from 3 to 5 but couldn't stay out... Too nasty! Tomorrow, 7-10 from north, hope to get in another full day.... rog f you have to wait a week it may pay off with better bite. 4 boats out today, only 2 browns, so far all fish look fresh from main lake, so they are just moving Into Fairhaven. Water is 2 ft lower than last year and still at 42 deg unless you work the 47 deg water in front Of the shoot in front of little sodus bay. Wind down to 10 out of north tomorrow, we plan on a whole day.... Today is looking better, still slow bite, but with good brownies... Last one was double digit and did some tail walkin!!!! More to come.... Another double digit hog... And a landlocked salmon.. Still fishing... Almost done for the day... More tomorrow..
