  1. I was told it was an electrical cable that ran across the lake. I think what you told me makes more sense now. I can hit this cable every time I troll the bottom there. The fish love this area. I got enough wire and copper wrapped around the cable. I'm still trying to find the barge that sunk off perry point. No luck yet hooking into it. But that darn cable is a pain in the as-s.
  2. Im also a 40 year man fishing this lake. I know bait can collect along the barge. I know it takes long cables to anchor the barge. Seneca is almost 40 miles long. You can find plenty of bait out in 500' any ware along the 40 mile length of it. If I had to pick a spot on this lake to fish for trout this spot is on the bottom of my list to fish. I know there’s an underground cable off Dresden in 200'. every time I troll the bottom at that depth there I hang up on it. I don’t know what it is.
  3. Ed nice pictures. The top picture looks like a coyote moving in. the bottom one confirmed it was a turkey. What you need now is a few bee hives.
  4. There’s a boundary line out there trolling around the barge. If you get to close to the barge they will let you know. There’s somebody in the barge all the time. Every morning you can see a small boat from Dresden harbor taking people out. If you get to close to the barge they will come out with a load speaker and tell you to back away. If you don’t listen. You will be reported to the Seneca county police. They will come out with a boat to give you a ticket. It makes no sense to fish to close to the barge anyway.
  5. This lake had a lot of small fishing shops years ago. If you needed something you could find it right here. Penn Yan was the center for all the shops. If you needed lights to fish at night you could buy them from Bobs bait and tackle in Penn yan and he would show you how to use them. If you needed a victrola they were built here too. Those old timers were blacksmiths. That why back in the old days we develop thing by using our brains and applied it to fishing. We don’t have those kind of people today. Everybody is educated to go to a big box store and buy their fishing tackle from another country. Its good we have a few people trying to bring back the old way of doing business in the fishing community. Support them. We need more of them.
  6. Fishing is still the same with plenty of small lake trout. Its a good spring and fall lake to fish. Party boats dominate the lake during the summer months. Heavy boat traffic slows down the fishing. What changed the most is the fisherman. 40 years ago this lake was very popular fishing at night. Today I don’t here much night fishing done anymore. Its still a good lake to fish at night but you have to know it if your going to be successful with it. Don t count out the pan fishing here. Its an excellent perch lake. This lake is much easier to fish for perch than Seneca. Where can you go on a nice fall day with beautiful foliage with a small boat and fish.
  7. Ed Those cabins at sampson are private. The state did not build them. The state gets a cut from the rental fees. What this park needs is seasonal campsites. They have the land to put in at least 100 to start. I hope the park will be turned over to a private developer soon. It will be a lot better than what it is now. The place is falling apart. It will take about 2 million to rebuild the marina alone.
  8. Great lakes lure You think we have it good today we had it better 40 years ago. Its was better back in the old days. We had everybody paying into the system and we had a lot of things for free. Today I pay more and get less for it. I agree The dec has done a good job with our lakes. Our boat launches are in terrible shape. Very little maintenance at most of them. Fewer people using them every year. You said you would pay 150 dollars to clean your trailer because you were one of the passive Americans that let our politicians get away with these foreigners coming in with their dirty ships and dumping their crap in our water. Yes I agree times are changing not for the better. Pretty soon you wont be-able to afford your fishing because they have you brainwashed to believe you have to pay more to enjoy your sport. I'm paying to much now. Its cheaper now for me to go out and pay to go fishing. I'm ready to sell the boat and screw them all. My boat is still setting home and its probably going to sit there all year, these bastards wont screw me. This is election year. Get rid of them. I saw the better days. They will never come back during my lifetime. You like to pay. Keep paying. Some day you wont be able to afford it.
  9. great lakes lure more wrong about what.
  10. Ed If deans cove is a state park, how come the other state parks don’t have the machines in now. Lodi is state. If sampson puts them in. it makes no difference for me. I get camping. That means I can come down and launch for free at lodi.
  11. Bigfoot How long have you lived camped, fish and worked in New York State. Almost 62 years for me. This state is in the worst shape I have ever seen it during my lifetime. Your passport is good for somebody that likes to launch at any state park. I agree its a good deal if you use it for this purpose. Your passport is not helping out with any state ramps. Its going in the general fund to help pay for the liberal empire of NY city. Take a good look at the conditions of the state ramps now. Your sleeping here. I agree our parks are underfunded .We don’t need most of them now. We don’t have the population to help fund them anymore. Why do you think the state is taking them over because the people think the government is better. Our people are moving out of New York because of liberal mentality I think the state should close up the parks that don’t get the use, or turn them over to a private enterprise. Sampson state Park is one of them now that’s going under. Take a good look at the marina. It should have been closed up 5 years ago for safety reasons. The roads in the park are deplorable. This is one park the state should try and move off to the private sector now. No it will be closed up someday. Don t say it wont happen. I can see the handwriting on the wall. Anybody that camps in New York State that gets a camp site can go to any state park during your reservation time and use that park the same day any ware in our state for free. I do it all the time. A passport is useless for me. Deans cove is just an experiment. If it works out you will see it in all state ramps. All ramps are empty now during the week. It makes no since to have somebody collect your money during the week. Just weekends. What I would do is boycott this ramp and send a message to the idiots that want to come up with another tax to stop this stupid thing now. It cost more to put in a machine. Its cheaper to have somebody collect your money on weekends.
  12. Bigfoot If you didn’t use the machine how did you get away with not paying for a parking ticket. You would have to put in your passport number to confirm you paid for a season pass. I don’t think deans cove is state. I think its a county ramp. I had a problem with them once. I get a camping spot at Sampson every time I fish the area. They told me my Sampson reservation is no good at deans cove, I would have to pay to launch there. I wouldn’t pay them. This is just another tax to suck the little guy dry. Its sickening with all the taxes we pay now to live in this brain dead liberal state. Who knows what they will come up with next to tax the people. Did you here the federal government wants to add a 12 cent gas tax to the gas now. Keep voting for the same crap. If they can get away with it here. All state ramps will have them. Another computer taking a summer job away from somebody. You can see why New York State has only 48 percent of its people paying taxes. The people that work and pay taxes continue to get ripped off. We don’t have any boats on the lakes now. Have you looked at all the fees and expenses we have to pay to enjoy a boat here. Its not worth it to own one now.
  13. Pokepole39 I like you. You call a spade a spade. Your entitled to your opinion if they like it or not.
  14. Most copper pullers work out to 90' to fish. All you need is something to tell you how deep you are fishing. Its pretty hard on the finger lakes to figure out how deep you are fishing with out one. Copper pulling is learning how to fish a contour with your spoon on the bottom. If you let out to much copper you will snag up. It requires boat skill and learning how to let out enough copper to fish the contour. If you want to fish with out a fish finder, fish the thermocline out in the middle of lake. It works if you know how deep your copper is running. Most of the time the fish will be bigger fishing the thermocline.
  15. Seaweed shouldn’t be a problem. Most of it will dry out and fall off your trailer by the time you get home with your boat. Its water left in your boat and motor that collects all the microorganism that spread to another lake. My launch at Sampson state park is loaded with the crap. My trailer is covered with it when I pull my boat out. There’s no way I’m going to crawl under my trailer and pick the stuff off. Nature put it there ,nature can dry it out and blow it away. Its been 5 years my boat as seen another lake. All the crap I collect with it came from Seneca Lake. If I fish another lake I fish with them with their boat. Sampson is probably one of the worst ramps on the Finger lakes for seaweed. by september its so thick you cant use the ramp. a constant north wind for a few days will plug the ramp up.
  16. Meat sticks and Peen 49 reels were very common back in those days with 40 oz of lead. Lol You could fish 15 spoons with those rigs. Times have changed. Today we can use 3 rods per man if you want. I cant get use to 3 rods. I catch enough fish on two rods
  17. Copper pulling is tough on your shoulders if you have arthritis. I got 2 Victrola boxes I don’t use anymore. I had a lot of fun with them over the years. Sawbelly fishing is obsolete. Who can afford a dozen sawbellies at today’s price. Night fishing is still a good way to fish but I wouldn’t use live bait. A jig and a good fish finder would be better way to fish under lights. I loved that Earl Holden book. Its a classic. I still have mine.
  18. The way this thing is handled, makes me laugh. It goes to show what kind of people we have running New York State. You can blame the federal government for all the invasive species we have swimming in our waters and walking our pastures today. Our government should have passed strict laws 30 yrs ago to prevent this problem. The damage is already done. Passing new laws wont control the problem. Our Voters continue to Reelect The same breed of politicians every year. This is election year. Vote everyone out of office. New york State should have cleaning stations now at every ramp paid by every boater. It would not cost much to put them in. only thing we can do is clean our boat every time we move it to a different lake. Make sure you drain the water out of your motors and make sure you have no water in the boat before you leave the ramp. Good luck. 5 out of 10 boaters will do all of this. Ray
