its not bottom bouncing its contour fishing. you have to know something about the lake you are fishing. best way to learn. get out and fish. it takes time. you wont learn it here. these finger lakes can be tough lakes to fish bottom. down riggers are not meant to fish bottom. those weights will hang up and you will loose everything including the down rigger. most of the guys that fish these finger lakes use copper with a heavy spoon and fish it down to 90 ft. try fishing these lakes inside 90 ft. the bottom contour is up and down. you have to know the lake. this contour fishing is very skilled fishing. not many fisherman know how to do it. they all talk about it but most of them have no idea how to do it. this is very skilled fishing. you have to know how to control your trolling speed and boat control. its not about buying all the fancy electronics we here about today. that stuff catches fisherman. so what is bottom fishing. ask 10 fisherman and you will get 10 different answers. the easy and cheap way to fish bottom. use a jig. very popular with the younger guy. my way fish the contour with wire and lite rod and reel and 12 to 16 ounce sinker with dead bait or spoons. it catches fish but not the big fish. you wont get many big fish on the bottom. 15 to 25 inches are common. anything bigger you have to fish up if you want big fish.

I think we should meet up someday and talk about the past years that went on during the Seneca lake fishery. today a lot different compared to what we had to go thru to learn how fish this lake. those old timers back in those days were a different breed. That old system was better. it weeded out the bad ones and the stronger ones survived. much better system compared to what we have today. why do you think our country is going to the dogs because people have it to easy. best ones I ever used came from a tackle shop from lake ontario. they hardly had any pull to them. they were 3 bladed bells. I trolled those ones off a down rigger rod. commercial ones from davis. they had 7 blades. these bad boys pulled hard. I bent the blades in the opposite direction a little to cut down the hard pull a little. I trolled them with a hand line or connect them to a down rigger ball. I got tired buying them. I made mine up with wire and looked around for parts to make them myself. 5 to 7 blades worked best for me.

I like thin braided 4 to 6 pound test. I use a tiny snap to connect my thin Sutton spoon to it. troll it slow. nice action. this works nice for finger lakes and lake Erie walleye for me. no stretch with super braid line. 10 ft leader.

your 70, im 66. I think we both know what when on here 50 years ago. I ask hows the fishing today they told me go to the white rock its been pretty good. that's the information I got years ago. it was all trial and error. life is common sense. the more complicated you make life the harder to live it. I like it simple. when I meant by the warmer water fish the bottom of the lake. that's were you will find them right now. after all these colds fronts we have had this month, they are glued to the bottom. forget your fancy sonar you wont see them. you have to know something about the lake to catch them. you wont find it in a book. you have to get out and fish and learn the lake. this takes time. good fishing lately, you might get your limit at the white rock. you get it now lol

Sk8man, you make a nice out door writer. you made a lot of good points but you make fishing to complictated for me. I agree this is a nice rainbow lake with a few browns but I think the Lake trout is still the bread and butter fish. Laker numbers are way down compared to what we had here 30 years ago. our weather the past month has been terrible. cold front after cold front with high wind. a cold front pushes fish down and makes them very hard to catch. you can still catch them but you won't get a lot.

This is a tough lake to fish this time of year. where do you find the warmist water right now. I can go out tomorrow and run up this lake with one pass and come back and get the other ones I missed. I won't catch a lot but enough to keep my boat from smelling like a skunk. if you get that skunk smell in your boat. its tough to get rid of it. this is not a easy lake to fish.

good area to fish during summer. worst part about it. the lake can get ruff from the south and north wind.

few miles south you can go to Watkins glen park to hike up the beautiful gorge. another 30 miles or more you can go to the corning glass center for the day. another few miles away you can view our great history sites about the Sullivan Clinton march across our state during the American revolution 1779. check out the new town battle field site too. a beautiful site to see. if you get to horse heads NY. what a funny name. general Clinton killed a lot of horses during the war here. if you don't like history go to Ithaca and check out this area. plenty of things to do. not much around hector to do. just sip a little wine or visit some arts and grafts shops. this part of New York state is a beautiful place to visit if you love history. its forgotten history. not many people know anything about it. this history help make New York State.

I'm not stuck in the past. football is won with big lines and giving the quarterback more time to get rid of the ball you might be right about the quarterback getting rid of the ball quicker. the plays he makes is little league football. short pass here another pass there. you call this football. I believe in big lines to protect the quarterdeck. give him more time to get the pass off. I want to see more Conrad Dobler style linemen out there. you take a cheap shot at my quarterback i will get even with you. to many cheap penalties destroying the game today.

anybody thinks the pats have a weak line you don't know football very well. if the pats had a weak line they wouldn't be on top of their division every year. offensive and defensive lines win football games. no line you cant win a game. the game is won in the trenches. these guys get beat up every play and get no credit for it. the coach and quarterback get all the glory. the media with the cameras show it to us every play. we have to watch the coach and seconds later the quarterback. it looks like a beauty contest to me. the guys on the line get called for a cheap penalty because he touch the quarterback. football is turning into a game of cheap penalties. if the pass receiver cant catch the ball the fans want the ref to call a penalty. back to the bills games, we should have beaten Dallas in the second game. the redskins beat us in the trenches. those other two game we could have one but the coaching was much better from NY and Dallas.
