  1. I witnessed the biggest largemouth I have ever seen (over 22") while fishing an unstocked pond in the woods behind my house 12 years ago while a little kid was reeling in a sunfish. Not exaggerating I think it was at least an 8lb bass. It engulfed the sunfish just before he lifted it out of the water and actually landed the fish on his Mickey Mouse pole. I have hiked back there with my fly rod a few times over the past 5 years and those large bass seem to have been pulled out but I will never forget that. There were 2 of them swimming side by side all day and I assumed they were carp from a distance. The pond is maybe 2 acres with a max depth of about 5' and loaded with 5" sunnies and 8" bass. Crazy to see such a large fish there that most wouldn't believe, but I was lucky enough to see it with my own eyes.
  2. Justin, your lure recommendation from last year finally worked for me. Every fish came on the size 9 except for the smallie on a Flicker Minnow! I love seeing the rod bend all the way back to me while trolling over 40' of water, you know it's ON
  3. Otisco was pretty hot for me tonight just before dark even though I forgot that I had left my fishfinder battery at home on the charger. Had a heavy fish on my second pass but came unbuttoned before I caught up to it in the yak. As soon as I reset my line it fired again and landed a nice 26" walleye that went back to swim another day. Just after sunset got another hit on the same rod and ended up being a nice 21" "eater" that I kept for dinner. As always I also had a nice smallmouth visit for a quick photo op. Lots of mooneye activity on the surface tonight once the wind died down. Best day I've had out there since last spring.
  4. unfortunately in my kayak I am limited to an area once I decide where to fish then fish the heck out of it, especially at night. I wish I had more confidence in various areas of the lake but have only had consistent success in 2 areas so far so that is where I focus on. I need to hire Justin one of these days to learn the grounds better.
  5. no I stayed at the south end near the boat launch
  6. Bosco I hear ya. I feel like I got hit by a truck this morning/ afternoon. I used to be able to fish until 2 or 3 in the morning, wake up at 6am and go like he**, but at 42 even a done at midnight trip is beating the snot out of me. I even missed a great morning for turkey hunting today and didn't even care......something's not right
  7. I worked the east shoreline pretty good in my kayak last night until about 11 pm with only 1 walleye on I think. It shook the hook after I had it on for about a minute. It hit my lure as soon as it hit the water and I never got much of a hook set on it. Took some drag and pulled me towards it while shaking its head before the line went slack. I did land 3 nice smallmouths while trolling before sunset though. The lake was very calm but did see some alewife action on the surface and didn't hear much action happening from the fishermen on shore. Water was 52- 53 degrees everywhere I fished. A nice but quiet night on Otisco, an all too familiar scene for me here.
  8. About to hit my honey hole in a little while in the yak for the night, can't wait!
  9. I heard of a guy catch a limit of eyes jigging at the narrows a couple seasons ago next to a crappie fisherman I talked to
  10. that's impressive. I have never landed or seen a walleye caught through the ice there but have also only tried maybe a dozen times for eyes since I was usually after browns or tigers.
  11. I have caught them casting and jigging them back tipped with a small scented trout rubber worm I typically use for steelhead.
  12. It definitely isn't a "numbers" lake and in the last 20+ years I have been fishing here I have only landed a limit of eyes in one day a handful of times but have had a couple memorable nights where I have landed 6 or more large eyes but that is rarely the case. A typical night of casting for me might be one walleye if I'm lucky and have been blanked more times here than any other lake I fish regularly but the quality and proximity are what keep me coming back.
  13. I used to like fish formula but since I usually have sambucca in my flask during ice fishing season I have rubbed a little of it on my lure and it seemed to work the few times I didn't have my scent with me. Lakers and rainbows love the stuff, they must have Italian roots.....
  14. I'm not crazy about bass fishing but I do love catching smallmouths when I get into them. If it weren't for those bronzebacks my walleye opener would have been almost fishless but the bass kept the net wet all night long with a 5# smallie as well.
  15. I kayak fish Lake "O" often and my advice on the big lakes is to Always wear a pfd, make yourself very visible to other boaters with a flag or bright clothing and check wind reports before heading out there, especially if paddling off-shore beyond 1/2 mile. Once the wind picks up it can be difficult to paddle back to shore with big waves or winds.
  16. Here are some pics from the night. I forgot about the 1 largemouth as well in front of Lader Creek. The smallie I'm holding had to have been close to 5#. We dropped a sad total of 5 fish between the 3 of us and 1 straightened out my friends treble hook.
  17. We hit otisco last night and hit an 'eye on the first cast. A 24"er. Smallmouths kept us busy after that until I caught a short eye, smallest and only non legal walleye I have ever caught out of Otisco at 16". I was using large husky jerks and friends were using xraps and all caught fish. Headed back in at 3 am. Great night for fishing but of course the fish only bit during each brief shower then shut off whenever it calmed down.
  18. Thanks, I almost beat it with a 29" I caught trolling in my kayak last summer off Stony Point but was still nothing like that noodle rod fight! I had to climb down a safety ladder for a gill grab since we didn't have a net. My hand went through the gill and into it's mouth and gashed a finger on a tooth. The entire thing was an experience I will never forget.
  19. I am a firm believer in scents and my friends will agree since they don't own them. I am almost always the first to catch a walleye and after the 2nd my tube makes its way around the boat. Use it ice fishing too.
  20. Really weird that this question came up today since it was 13 years ago today when I landed my first trophy walleye which happened to be while casting for browns off the long pier coming out of little sodus. I had 3 boats watching me land it with my 10 1/2' noodle rod with 6 lb test and a 3/8 oz little cleo. They all offered me all the fish on their boats for this sow. Just happened to be on opening day of walleye season. You could say it was a pretty lucky day for me haha
  21. For what it is worth since I have never fished for walleye in the bay, I asked Brendan at Screwy Louie's last year about it and he said the walleyes are in there early in the spring and then move out into the lake.
  22. It's all about which boxer shorts I wear. Doesn't that work for everybody? Once I caught on to it I always wear one of my lucky ones.
