I used the new Cannon Mag 10 STX today and was very happy with it. Very smooth running and fast retrieval. The boom really extends out far too. Sent from my SM-T580 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Fishinfreak, I installed the new Mag 10 stx today and the electric plugs were the same as the old style Mag 10. The old DR manual was late 90s so it's possible the previous owner upgraded the DR and battery wiring before I bought the boat in 2014. The slide in base is different and the new low swivel base installed in same holes as previous one. I sure like my Master lock with homemade aluminum T latch I use for the old DR better than the wimpy Cannon lock you buy for $35 for the new style.

Offshore, I like the advice your charter Capt friend gave you. Keep a simple and proven approach and try to find the fish. If you're on them you'll catch them. I fish solo most of the time and it works for me and makes the trip more enjoyable.

I have a pair of Cannon Mag 10s that are nearly 20 years old. One still going strong, the other failed just last weekend. I ordered a new Mag 10 STX and will be installing it today. The nice thing is it looks like the hole pattern for the swivel base is a perfect match from old to new. Definitely some improvements from old to new too. The old one that failed had a cracked spool that caused the spool to turn out of center as the DR operated. That made the motor gear and spool drive gear to have uneven contact and about 1/3 of the teeth on the spool drive gear wore down. Of course it gave up the ghost in the down position. It's fun pulling 90' of cable out of the lake. Thank God I had heavy leather work gloves on the boat. If I have any significant pros or cons soon I'll update this post. Lake ontario Walleyes ?
BreakingBass replied to Dr W's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Somebody mentioned it here and it's not a far drive. Chautauqua Lake is great for walleye. I grew up there and miss it. Beautiful area too for a weekend family trip. -

Good reports, thanks guys. Fishys report is the most encouraging I've seen lately. Love the king Skippy. -
Trolled pretty much north of Hedges in the 200 to 300' area yesterday as shallower water showed nothing a few days before. Marked a few fish deep around 110' over 230' but no takers. Water had a nice 1' chop which calmed down as the sun came out. Then near noon when the wind shifted it started to chop up again. Has anyone else seen anything promising out of IBay in the last week? Thanks, I figured it would. I was just hoping it would be plug and play, but I guess things change over 20 years. Ha, ha. Sent from my SM-T580 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

My old Mag 10 just wore out. I'm looking to replace it with a new Mag 10. Does anyone know if the electrical connector and slide on base mount are the same on the new ones? Thanks. Sent from my SM-T580 using Lake Ontario United mobile app

Thanks for the reality check Earl. I was out in that neck of the woods last Sunday AM and had the same experience. Minus the 2 fish caught. A week ago was trolling shallow near Shipbuilders and the water was so clear I could see every detail of the bottom. Very cool, but no fish. Let's keep posting so when it starts to turn on we all know. -

BreakingBass replied to LegaSea's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I was in that spot yesterday morning and only marked 4 fish in 3 hours. Not a single hit though. Water temp around 49-50. Trolled from 90 to 140. Marks were in the 130 area. Sent from my SM-T580 using Lake Ontario United mobile app -

Hey guys I was out there on Sun the 25th, about Midway between the bay and Hedges. Started in 150' and trolled to 400'. Hooked 4 and boated 1, even hits on spoons and SD/flies. All hits were in the 330 to 360' area with the riggers at 65-75 down. Three were Kings with 2 saying goodbye 10' behind the boat. Nice GoPro video of the fish splashing and a lure flying over my head. The 3rd no show is unknown as he was on the other line as I was bringing a king in. Always a fun event when fishing solo. Lake temps still seem screwy. -

I-Bay Browns Mon 8/19
BreakingBass replied to BreakingBass's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Thanks for all the tips guys. Will definitely try the smaller spoons and dipseys and watch my bottom depth. I like the idea of an evening run for browns because it's easier to reach the shallower water from dockside.
