  1. Like most everybody else, I had two strokes. Then I finally upgraded to a 16.5' Alumacraft, tiller control with a 40 hp, EFI, 4 stroke Yamaha. Best upgrade I ever made. I've had no problems with the weight back there but, then again, I never ran a 2 stroke on that particular boat either. I do like the 4 stroke though & would never go back to a 2 stroke. The boat goes so fast that I don't even need to open it up all the way (goes ~28 mph, not wide open.) Have you thought about (don't laugh) taking a 50# bag of potatoes with you, put it as far back as you can & make a test run? Out of the hole will be different but you'll know what the extra weight feels like for steering & wave action. Or take two AGM batteries on board (about 45# each) & give the extra weight a try. The 4's are reliable, start on a dime & haven't had any problems. The only issue is that they need to warm up otherwise they run like sh&t. Do about 3-4 min warm-up.
  2. Sorry 'bout that. While I was typing my response, I thought it would be more helpful if I could give you a few spots to dip up north. I'd rather tell you where you can dip instead of telling you where you can't, but I don't dip up that way & wouldn't even know where to start. Anyway, best of luck to you. Hope you get some emeralds & hope you get a lot of fish with them. Going for perch??
  3. here's the link off the DEC website that shows a map of the corridor that you can net & use live or frozen baitfish, unless they're certified. If certified, they can be used anywhere. http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/fish_marine_pdf/lecorridor.pdf There are also three transportation corridors: 1. Upper Niagara Rive/Lake Erie 2. Lower Niagara/lake Ontario/St. Lawrence 3. Hudson River here's the description for the Upper NR & LE "Upper Niagara River/Lake Erie Overland Transportation Corridor shall mean the geographical area associated with the New York portion of Lake Erie and the Upper Niagara River west of and including a line starting at I-90 at the Pennsylvania border, then continuing east to its intersection with I-290, then continuing north along I-290 to its intersection with State Route 62, then continuing west to its intersection with I-190, then north to its intersection with the Lower Niagara River. Baitfish collected from the New York portion of the Upper Niagara River/Lake Erie water body may be transported within this corridor." The rules change (I think) if you use salted minnows but here's the DEC's link for use of baitfish. So, if you net in the lower or LO you can use in the lower & L.O. http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/47282.html Hope that helps.
  4. Small Boat Harbor should still be open for a launch (I know they were last year) but you might want to check that first since the new outfit took over. Also, if you're fishing the Upper, watch where the Canadian border is. It doesn't go down the middle of the River.
  5. The way I see it, a person will never go broke by being generous. You'll always have enough $$. The ones who pinch every penny & try to nickel & dime everybody, will never have enough.
  6. Rich...thanks for the link. Sorry I addressed it to someone else. Must have been thinking of having a Killians & the keyboard & brain weren't cooperating. I glanced thru the article & am always amazed at how every base has to be covered. That's one of the things that makes it interesting; all the different aspects that come into play.
  7. Whaler1: that's a dammmmm nice boat your dad has. Please tell him that (but I thik he already knows) KilliansRed: do you have a link or was it a mag article on the restoration program? Can you post? I'm very interested & enjoy reading/researching any and all articles on restoration of native species. That seems the trend & direction of many environmental movements these days. thanks.
  8. At the place I used to work (before retiring) we did a lot of soda blasting. Basically, just dry baking soda powder that got shot out under pressure. Very effective for paint & gunk removal without damaging the base metal. It does get slightly alkaline when wet so you have to be careful that you don't corrode any material.

  10. AWESOME!! I gotta book it for next year. You guys are killin' me. I'm here at the Glen now & have been sampling the grpes & barley the last couple of days. We always drive on 23 between the Glen & H-Port while my wife watches me drool when we pass over the canal. A big CONGRATS to everyone. The Muskies Inc guys are a great bunch. ...and especially a big congratulations to you Nalod for taking the top prize. Much deserved.
  11. That lab looks like it would have enjoyed a few more ducks! Still sounds like a great time. Hopefully next time.
  12. Perch fishing in L Erie has been either "you're ON" or you're coming home with about six. The schools have been very small and move around a lot. Last few years have been just the opposite. 40 boats or so anchored in one spot & everyone is getting what they want. What I never liked or cared for was watching people throw fish back in because they're 7" or 8" long. Coming up from 65', those fish are awfully bloated.
  13. Absolutely, gents. I won't hesitate to use a guide when I've never fished a particular lake or area. That's when I usually call on one. I found that not only do they try to get you on fish, they'll also tell you about the area you're fishing, describe its ecology, and usually end up showing me some new fishing technique that's unique to that area. Otherwise, I'm just flopping around out there not knowing what I'm doing. I get a HECK of a lot more than fish out of all of them that I used. And they've all been recommended by word of mouth. Thanks much for the contact.
  14. Can you send me his contact info (name, phone)? Never fished Otisco & would like to give him a try.
  15. That's cheap, Jimski. With what I have in gear, fish are running me about $8,000/lb (but worth every penny). You can't be perch & chips, that's for sure!
  16. Chas...I do all of my walleye fishing in L Erie & go to Ontarion for the steelies & salmon. The ones down here have all been on the skinny side with hardly any fat at all in them. Caught a couple of 27 inchers that barely made 6-3/4 lbs. Last year, lots of fat. I just thought it was flukey that they were skinny but I listened to a Lake Erie DEC biologist (works out of the Dunkirk unit) last month giving a presentation on the walleye telemetry study going on & he got on the topic that the average weight of the walleyes that they netted for sampling is about one to two lb. less than previous years, and they don't know why, yet. I talked to some people who think it's the invasive spiny fleas. The spines stick inside the difestive systems of smaller fish & those in turn get eaten by the larger fish. That's just people talking so I'll wait for a scientific study on that one. Oh, btw, those are some nice looking 'eyes you're holding. A big Congrats!!
  17. The years I see a lot of fat in the walleyes have been some of the coldest. This past year I'm not seeing a lot of fat at all. My predict is a mild winter. the 'eyes don't tell lies.
  18. for the last three years I headed way over to Seattle, WA to an event called "Hops & Props." It's sponsored by the Museum of Fllight as one of their major fundraisers. Last year they had over 70 different breweries, each having from two to six beers to sample. They allow limited attendance so you're not waiting 20 minutes for a five minute sample. Get as many samples as you want...almost all craft beers. It's right on the floor of the museum &, if I can find it, I have a pic of myself sampling a beer at the nose gear of an SR-71 spyplane. Below is a scan of the program and you'll notice that guests are instructed to "refrain from touching or setting your beer or plates down on any aircraft. A drink ring on the wing of a WWI fighter doesn't look good. Tickets go for sale on line in the Fall & sell out in about two weeks. Now, that's a craft beer lover's dream!! Hope to see you there next year! I made a .pdf scan of the brochure...How do I attach it to this thread?
