SUMMARY & FURTHER DETAILS

====================

HEading to Olcott from Cleveland early Tuesday 8/3 through Friday 8/6. This will be our first trip fishing anything besides Erie, we are set up for Steelies here with two downriggers and plenty of rods. I have been reading reports and tips for fishing Kings which is our target. This is my first season using downriggers so still have not set up dodgers / flashers but plan to once we get to the tackle shop in Olcott. So Im looking for any tips on going for Kings, looking at weather im seeing some 10-20 out of the SW for teh next few days, how will this effect the fishing? My rods are currently rigged with braided but Im reading that people are using wire for their dipsy rods, is this how I want to reset and how many feet is good to have on here? Fleas.. something I will be new too, do they jam up rigger wire? Is there a better line/ wire to use to make it easier to clean the lines? Any other help would be greatly appreciated!

If you have braid diver set-ups with line counter reels, you don't need wire this weekend, but if you are looking for future purchases, it is good to have a couple of wire set-ups. For Steelhead, head out deep with 400' being a good starting point. Fish 40-60' down. A good spread with your erie gear would be 6 to 10 colors of leadcore off boards, a pair of dipsys and two downriggers cheated. You will have all you can handle with just those rods. If you want Kings, you will want to drop flasher/flies down on the dipsys to reach 60-80' levels. Wes at the slippery sinker can hook you up with some flasher/fly combos. If it is too rough to get out deep, there are good steelhead numbers 60-80 deep between Olcott and Wilson right now as well. Good luck.

Thanks! We got in today, hung out with Wes and got schooled then hit the water around 4pm until 730.. The winds started to pick up pretty hard but the lake wasnt too bad. We only went 60'-120' and ran the program from the bottom looking for kings at the bottom and then up to around 45'. We had one pull back and landed a small shinook but released. Heading out in the AM before dawn and spending the day on the water. Going to try in close again then head deeper as morning comes up. Thanks!

You might just want to head off shore pending the weather. We normally would do the same start in close looking for kings and then head off shore but lately it hasn't been worth the time. Go straight to 400' or roughly 26/5 line and as Gill T said start your spread. Last Sundy temp was real high not sure if you have a temp gauge but I would start high. 30 and 40 with cheaters and your braid dipseys on a 3 setting at 135 ish. We had over 20 fish on last week. Ever day is different but offshore has been fantastic all year. Kings are out there as well landed a 24# sunday and ever time took a run of one - Flasher flind just a little deeper in temp.

Thanks for the details.. We do not have a working probe right now but so its going kind of blind there. I will take your advice on the run out to 400 if the winds are still up in the AM. We will be on channel 68 "morning wood"
