  1. Ray - Did you sign it as "Ray K" or with your southern accent; "Buffy Ray" Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. BF – The position of the eye where the towline attaches greatly affects how any board tracks away from the boat. Double skis have a slight tendency to tilt away from the boat a little when moving; hence the outside board is “digging†more as it sits a little deeper in the water than the inner board. By having the outer board more forward than the inner board, the eye is automatically farther back on that outer board and will help tracking I see by your photo that the eye is extreme forward on the inner board. If the upper board were mine I'd take the connecting rods off & plug the holes. I'd then lay one on top of the other such that the outside one is about 4 inches ahead of the inside one then redrill the holes for the connecting rods. I'd then attach the eye directly under the E in "super". If both sets of boards were mine I'd ask myself if I have "two pair of mismatched socks". i.e. Is the left one of the bottom supposed to go with the right one on the top and then the right one on the bottom go with the left one on the top? Good luck, Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. Billfish - Can you reassemble the boards such that the outer board is farther forward than the inner board? Tom B. (LongLine)
  4. Thank you Mr Wahl. You're #500. Erby - You're closer than I am. Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. 488 & counting. Who's going to be #500?? Michigan had over 700 on theirs. http://www.petitiononline.com/3rrolo/petition.html What's your number For those of you who support it, here’s a letter that you can probably copy/paste & send them an email if you’d like. Hardcopy will available at the LOTSA Fishing Expo in a couple weeks. (along with a listing of regional directors snail mail & tel numbers) Dear sir, As a concerned Salmon/Trout fisherman, I feel it is important for the NYSDEC to enact a Special Regulation for the open waters of Lake Ontario for those sportsmen actively trolling for Salmon/Trout that allows anglers to use 3 Rods. The DEC should enact it and then monitor it through its creel surveys to verify its benefits similar to what Michigan has done. The 3-ROD RULE will benefit both the sportsman and New York State, especially in these tough economic times. The number of fishermen on Lake Ontario has trended downward for a number of years. This proposal will increase angler satisfaction with the fishery hence boost the number of return trips that anglers make to the lake which in turn will help local communities. “Catching†is the major factor that an angler weighs in his decision to make return visits to the fishery. Salmon/Trout are widely dispersed throughout the water column for much of the year and as such are difficult to key in on. Allowing the 3rd rod will increase the individual anglers’ “catch potential†during these times. Those fishermen that don’t catch a fish here are the ones that become frustrated and decide to go somewhere else next time or spend their money on other forms of recreation. The Creel Limits and the Lure/Bait/Hook/Point rules control fishery exploitation NOT the number of rods an angler uses. The 3-ROD RULE advocates no change in Creel Limits but does define Lure/Bait/Hook/Point rules and is much more applicable to sport trolling for Salmon/Trout than the current outdated statewide “2 line with or without rod/5 lure/15 points per line†regulations. I feel the regulation should be structured -As a special regulation for Sportfishing on the open waters of Lake Ontario & specifically not on the Bays, rivers or channels. -To stipulate only “Actively trolling for Salmon/Trout†-To allow 3 lines per person and that they must be attached to fishing rods -To limit the number of points on an individual rod and a maximum number of lures/baits on all 3 rods -To limit the number of lures/baits per boat -To stipulate that all hooks must be attached to lures or be baited In conjunction, the regulation should remind Trollers that (1) Foul hooked fish must be immediately released and (2) The legal limit of fish is still in effect. Thank You To make sure it gets to the agenda people, address/send to: [email protected] with subject line: Possible Freshwater Fishing Regulation Changes. Or send to Regulatory Agenda Contact (6 NYCRR Part 10, Sportfishing Regulations) Shaun Keeler, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Division of Fish, Wildlife & Marine Resources, E-mail: [email protected] Tom B. 6. As Ray said there's one in every port. Unfortunately even though you have a 50 cal, he may have an RPG. Boating courses are great as they'll make you aware of the "rules of the road", unfortunately your taking the course won't help that guy who's on a crash course for you. I'd suggest rather than keying on the phrase "who has the right of way", that you always be alert and pursue the philosophy "How can I safely stay away from that ignorant @ss#0LL" before he causes some damage. It's also beneficial to remember that most near shore trollers often scare the fish about 150 yards toward deeper water. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. The only advantage I see to having a glass boat is that I wouldn't have to take a glass of water with me every night I go out to kiss it goodnight. Come on spring Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. Rod - I get the same blue box on another tab. What works is to right click inside the blue box then click on open. That takes you to the video site. Tom B. (LongLine) BTW FJ - Nice
  9. Don’t get over anxious or be in a super hurry to get out there. That’s when stupid things happen. Things like not screwing the riggers on, forgetting to put in the plug, forgetting the thermos (or the beer), trying to launch the boat without taking the rear trailer strap off. (Not that I’m speaking from my own experience…) Remember one thing after you’re safely out there on the water in a well running boat…DON’T put the engine in reverse with planner boards out. (Right Stan?) or Dipseys or riggers out either. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Did you check your security settings? If set too high you'll get a lot of "little x's" & a lot of stuff won't work. LOU is now a "streaming" site & daggone blocking stuff/crap-ola at work won't even let me on. Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. Also a couple yrs ago off the Genny but right in front of the river. They turned on the fog horn & scared the He[[ out of me. Then I remembered they don't blow a horn & got out of there. Calmed down & grabbed the camera. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. Glen Anderson at the Ringwood site did an outstanding job on flies & double snell. Here's link http://ringwoodfcs.proboards40.com/inde ... oard=howto HIH Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. Joe - I'll be there. "anxious" is an understatement. I figure 4 more good snowfalls at most. Ray - I'm more worried about my back than an axe. They clear the parking lot by plowing it into the river. But if you really want to send money, I won't stop you. I have my eyes set on a Government axe - roughly $850. Money order or bank check...okay?! Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. Did a quick scouting trip today - Guess I’ll have to wait a little bit to launch (yeah, 2 freek’ng months) Brr… that looks cold Wonder if they found any bait off Durand Hmm, at least nobody is stuck on the ice Come on Spring, Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Erin - Can you post a picture of the back of your boat? There might be a way to clamp it on. Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. I've had Aluminum, Fiberglass & wood. The glass one made some funny noises as a wave broke & I landed on a sandbar. I'd much rather have a dent in an aluminum boat than in a glass one. Bluefin 18 Ft'r for over 20 years & have never regretted it. Stored in my driveway & towed to the launch. Good width to length ratio. Have been out in 5 ft waves. Very stable. Boat will probably last longer than I will. Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. That is what I like about this board. Guys willing to share their personal experience. Ray - Is that why your pics only show fur on your back?. Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. Axion – Thanx for posting. (Seriously, I mean that) Not many guys have commented why they were against it. There are a great many of us “boat guys†that do not want to see Mother Nature raped by “boat guys†or “shore guys†or by anyone period. (plug-pullers, fly whippers, spinner splunkers, float fluzzies, nor worm dunkers...) There’s more to the 3-ROD RULE than simply allowing 3 rods. There are also constraints. The current statewide Sportfishing rules allow an angler to use 2 lines and on each line he may have up to 5 lures or baits. Hence under the current NYSDEC definition of angling, those 3 guys you speak off on that bass pond or pike stream could legally have up to 30 minnows in the water at one time. Those two other guys with the 5 “rugrats†could legally have up to 70 baits in the water. Under the current rules, those 5 “rugrats†don’t even have to be using rods. Some fishermen are C&R, some are not. I’m 100% C&R but I won’t begrudge any legal angler from keeping his legal Creel Limit. That is what Creel Limits are for. i.e. to control exploitation of the fishery. I’m sure that any C.O. would take in interest in observing that group with the “rugrats†keeping their limit. The petition asks the DEC to try the rule on the open waters of Big-O for those activel trolling for Salmon/Trout. This is meant as a trial. i.e. see how it goes. The results can easily be observed and measured through their well established Boat surveys that they take every year on Big-O. Just as in Michigan, a decision to expand it or not expand it can be made after data has been collected. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. Hey Tom - Consider a rename? How about... Tom B. (LongLine)
  20. That report was written for the NYC Office of Management & Budget...NYC unions, etc. I doubt very much that the authors would have been paid for it if it said anything but what it does. It was obviously pursued as justification to lobby for more money to waste in NYC. Did you know that the yearly pension payout for police & firemen from NYC is greater than the yearly payroll. (yes I know some will say "they put their life on the line everyday"; to which I counter: not nearly as much as do the servicemen in the Middle East....for a hell of a lot less pay/benefits and a lot more danger.) Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. If you haven't already seen it - Interesting read http://rochestercitynewspaper.com/news/ ... hy-in-the/ Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. I think the Bills could use a few replacements. Watch, They'll probably knock New England out of it, then ... if the Jets beat Miami....... Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. Lyte- Sorry I couldn’t answer this yesterday. (Had to move my son's to Albany for an internship) I believe most of the emails get read and then forwarded to Steve Lapan who is the leader of the Lake Ontario Unit. I’ve had replies from Steve(I think Musky too). Last word was that he was going to take it up with the DEC regional fishery managers and with Albany. He stated that if there was some support among them, the DEC would then approach sportfishing groups for their interest. He also said he’d keep me informed. I'm sure the holidays have "slowed" things up. Also, with the current financial crunch, I’m sure some DEC folks are sweating quite a bit just like the rest of us. I think we all realize that if the downward trend in the numbers of fishermen could be reversed that the state wouldn’t need to raise taxes on fishing. Tom B. (LongLine)
  24. As a "major" soloist, 12 Lb mono is fine for almost anything run clean, as long as you inspect the line frequently. I used to use a lot of 8 Lb but had to cut off a lot of little pieces & retie every couple hours or after every fish. Mono stretches & when it gets that "goofy" curl in it, is worthless. Got tired of cleaning the engine well & didn't want to throw the scrap overboard. When fleas show up, got to go bigger. Tom B. (LongLine)
  25. I made 3 sets of wood boards before my current "store bought" boards. If you move the main eyelet towards the rear an inch or two It'll make a big difference in how they track. On another set, I bought 3 pieces of bar stock and clamped them together like an "H". I then molded some lead in the upper part of it, about 3/8" thick. I then cut it to the length of the inboard board, drilled & mounted it with some screws. Back in the days of my single wood board I bent the main line eyelet downward. All of them made a big difference in how they tracked. Tom B. (LongLine)
