you say "Launch now and leave her in" if by that you mean launch for the season and put it in the slip, then IMO you should be fine. The boat will be sitting in marina water that is quite a bit above freezing and that will protect the block from freezing. I'd be more worried about un-winterizing it and leaving it on the trailer in a cold snap. THAT can get the block cold enough to cause damage. If you're still worried, the trouble light in the engine compartment will certainly take care of it. Only issue there is (and it IS an area of concern) it's not a marinized piece of equipment and therefore not spark protected, so if you DO have any fuel leaks and the bulb sparks at all if and when it blows out, the possibility exists of blowing the boat up from the spark igniting gas fumes. the bigger around, solid tube antenna is actually a modification of a Scotty Black Box pickup and is an option for folks like me that have riggers with an autostop bead to shut the rigger off, not needed on your Cannons, the smaller diameter coil antenna works just fine. Like I said I have 300' of coated cable on my probe rigger and was down deeper than 160' last summer without signal loss, so I'd guess that the weaker signal thing is just a rumor (probably perpetrated by those fish hawk people ) Tim

the decision to re-prop should be based primarily on whether you boat can get to the proper recommended rpm range at WOT (Wide Open Throttle), not how slow you can troll down to. If you can reach the proper WOT rpm range with your current prop, you DO NOT want to lower pitch because that will make it possible to over rev the engine (and possibly blow it up). As was suggested above, if you want to troll slower, the cheapest option is a good set of trolling bags (NOT drift socks, they aren't built to withstand the pressures of trolling) I have a set of 28" Amish Outfitter Beefy Bags for my 24' Thompson and with both deployed, they will slow my boat almost to a dead stop at idle (0.3-0.4 mph down speed). You won't need bags that size for your 18' Lund. The other option would be a kicker. Tim

Hi steal, first, you want to replace the entire rigger cable with the coated (it almost sounded like you were thinking of splicing the coated onto the end of your existing, sorry if I misunderstood) You want a minimum of 200' of cable. I have a Depth Raider (same technology just with a digital display) and last season replaced my 6 year old coated cable with a 300' spool of coated. What antenna options are you considering? It kind of depends on what brand rigger you have. I have Scotty riggers and the stock antenna that comes with the DR is big enough diameter that the Scotty autostop beads slide right through. I believe that Big Jon's may have a similar type of autostop setup. I believe Cannons sense when the cable breaks continuity with the water, etc. I've had my DR probe over 160' down and haven't lost signal. Tim

I've caught several sturgeon in the Menominee River in Wisconsin. Biggest I've landed was over 5 feet long and in the 60 lb range took it on a night crawler I was drifting near the bottom in the river for walleye. Hooked some monsters that were 7+ feet and over 100 lbs, but never landed them. That river has a lot of sturgeon and they even have an open season for them there. Tim

Dawn tells me they are doing a ton of renovations to the Newfane Marina this spring and will be able to accommodate some larger boats. I've had a slip there for 5 or 6 years now and have been pretty happy with the marina. There is most likely still a waiting list to get a slip which you have to sign up on at the Newfane Town Clerks Office at the Town Hall, not the marina itself. Slips are $45/foot for a seasonal slip. for dirty water/mudline fishing, it's really hard to beat smithwick rattlin' rogues. They make a lot of noise and are easy for fish to find in the dirty water. Tim
