  1. Have you tried smaller stuff? I run a lot of spoons in the 2.5-3" range. Biggest silver fish I ever caught trolling in Cayuga was on a 2.25" spoon in late June.
  2. Huh never thought about that before, they probably do stop feeding when spawning like the other fish do. Good thought. Might explain why I remember only getting small ones last April (6-10") and none of the big mommas. Anyone get fish with mature lamprey in late April or early May? They are probably getting ready to spawn though it'll be a few weeks before they run the creeks.
  3. Hey great report, sounds like fun! Good to hear not all of them out there have lamprey.
  4. You could look at Sampson S.P. on Seneca. Decent shore fishing at times for pike, very easy access to the lakers right out front, great kayak jigging spot. Assuming the wind behaves, it is a bit exposed. Trails to explore. Swimming area if it's warm enough.
  5. Have fun! If you're looking shallow keep moving around, there will be small scattered groups of fish. You can get few right in a row often, then have to go on the search again. The deep fish will be easier to find but if you can find them shallow in the spring they're usually cruising for a meal and happy to bite. Any bait you see is good to fish under.
  6. To target lakers from a kayak this time of year I'd go out of Dean's Cove or Long Point. And fish from just south of the launch towards the silos on the west side, or north of Long Point on the east. The bottom structure is a little less varied so it's easier to stay in your depth. There are also going to be more fish up there than around Taughannock. You could also try the south end just past the drop off. Avoid the middle of the lake. Most lakers will be deep still, well over 100'. Your best bet is to work shallower flats looking for feeding fish. They could be anywhere from 40' on out. I'd start in 60-80 and expand outwards if I didn't find anything, then start looking in the 120'-150' range if there wasn't anything shallower. Not always easy to find this early, most are still very deep.
  7. They can't be going far, transporting that stuff is expensive. Less than a few miles I would guess and probably less than one. Here in Ithaca the south end canals have badly needed dredging for some time but it keeps getting put off. They don't have anywhere close enough to dump the spoils and the available spots were prohibitively expensive. Last I heard they may finally be getting around to it? It gets dumped and dries for a few years before being used as fill, due to contamination concerns they don't do much else with it.
  8. The official access road is off limits so the best way to get there is from 13A. Between Coy Glen Rd. and the cemetery is a driveway on the opposite side of the road. There is a sign for a limo service that is down the road. Go down there to the end, park, and you have to cross the RR bridge to get to the ladder. edit: FYI I should say this bridge as any other RR bridge is posted. If that's a concern to anyone or it's a nice day and you're up for a walk, the other option is to park on the north side of the Kohl's / Buffalo Wild Wings building and follow the access road (just north) to the inlet.
  9. Here's a few flyers, a regular one and a tear-off for posting on BBs and the like. These are PDFs, if anyone wants a Word document let me know. Edit 3/27: switched versions of the flyer, had a slightly older one up by mistake. MPLP_tearoff_flyer.pdf MPLP_full_flyer.pdf
  10. Hey congrats and too bad at the same time. Always liked hearing that rumble as you went by. Best sounding boat on the lake. Good luck with a new one!
  11. Hey sorry about the fingers but glad you like them! Thanks! I may as was well announce this now. I'm going to be donating $1.00 for every dozen jigs I sell from March 1 through the end of May to the Myers Point Lift Project. If you need a few jigs and feel like supporting the project, well now you can do both at once! Stocks are a little low right now and I won't have painted heads probably until the end of the month, but as soon as the weather allows I'll be pouring and painting up a storm. Thanks for all your support everyone! Alec
  12. Nice! Have fun getting ready. Most of the way is clear enough but the wind after the last snow put a big drift right in front of the barn door. Which is also now frozen shut. One or two melting days to go!
  13. 300' of lawn and field to get it out of the barn and into the driveway... hoping the snow goes before the ground thaws or I'll have to wait a few more weeks. Soon!!
  14. This is from the Seaguar website: They're saying the manufacturing process, basically. Also for very narrow lines like Premier (their thinnest per rated strength) it's difficult to keep the tolerances low, whereas a thicker line rated at the same strength could have more variability in the actual diameter. I've bought some cheap stuff (never again, BPS brand fluoro) where you could run the line through your fingers and it noticably varied in thickness. It was also overall thicker than premium line. A side note, I've had good luck with Seaguar main lines, but tried some Grand Max 5X tippet last year that I hated. Knots popping like crazy and outright line failures.
  15. Hi all, I have been in touch with Rollie and if folks want to make electronic donations, I'll gladly accept them at my PayPal account: [email protected]. Please make sure you check the "I'm sending money to family or friends" box or else PayPal will think it's a business transaction and take a cut. Donating via PayPal is possible even if you don't have a PayPal account and want to give some other way- go to paypal.com, click on "send money", and follow the instructions. I'll then forward the donations to him. Please also email ([email protected]) or PM Rollie with the details (date and amount) so he has a record of what to expect from the electronic/PayPal side of things. Also this is my business account so it may say "Deepwater Lures" at some point instead of my name, no worries, you're in the right spot. This is a great cause and will help those who have problems getting around experience the awesome fishery we have in the Finger Lakes! Anything you all can do to contribute is very welcome and will help make some great memories for disabled veterans and others. Thanks! Alec
  16. I have been using P-Line 100% fluoro for a few years without problems. Strong, no knot problems with a uni or double uni knot to braid. It works as well leaders for trolling and lake trout jigging, but is too stiff for fly fishing leaders.
  17. Nice!! Congratulations Ed! Have fun outfitting her, you should have a good year without having to worry about that dang motor anymore.
  18. This is a very fun event, unfortunately I won't be able to make it this year. Glad you enjoyed it and got something from it! The TU folks do a great job running this, thanks guys. There is a lot for kids to do and see which is awesome. Animal skulls, fly tying, a raffle and more- fun stuff, enjoy! Alec
  19. Thanks a lot for the summary! I too have been on and off with the diaries and one factor is it's a bit of a pain, especially on busy days. I found the best thing (for me, anyway) was to have a voice-recording pen along. Catch a fish, measure it, record on the pen. It was easier than trying to keep track of paper, and I never brought the diary itself along in case of an accident so I was always trying to deal with all these pieces of paper. The voice recorder did make it easier. Making stuff up at the end of the season can't be helpful for the DEC, better to not do it at all! As for all the good questions you mentioned, I think many of them don't have solutions or are expensive to try to answer. Nothing can be done about the fleas or the mussels, they're here to stay. And now the gobies too. The other questions like browns in Canandaigua would probably require a lot of time and effort (money) to figure out. Trying to get the money to the DEC is a great first step I think. They are very understaffed and underfunded as we all know. I also think the 1 rainbow limit is a good experiment- see what happens. Maybe Canandaigua didn't NEED it, but it could change a good fishery into an outstanding one. Having this limit on a lake with a decent rainbow population, alongside the more troubled lakes, can only be a good thing as far as data goes. It can always be changed back in the future.
  20. Try a double uni, go with 7-8 wraps on the braid and 4-5 on mono/fluoro depending on diameter. Haven't had a problem yet.
  21. Wow, thanks PAP. It sounds like something will work out for sleeping. I'm not 100% sure I can be there yet and will have to juggle a few things in July but it's high on the list. Thanks so much for the offer!
  22. If this is okay that's great, I have a mattress that goes in the back of my truck. Don't even bother with tents anymore.
  23. Sounds awesome, definitely interested and have room for 1 in my boat or happy to ride with someone else if it works out. Never caught a walleye (haven't really tried) and would love to start!
  24. Les it was your post that gave me the thought and Frogger was typing at the same time as I was. Group effort, beers for all.
  25. If it's not anadromous then maybe they're looking for something less technical. How about plain old "steelhead". Since they're asking about trout give it a shot.
