  1. It's pretty much a tradition with us to get our own. Get those waders/hipboots on, get into those knee-deep or shallower small runs and lift out those leaves. Pick through them carefully. Seems where the leaves pile up against rocks is always a good area. I think that you're not supposed to harvest them from trout inhabited waters, never really checked the regs for that. It's best to pick a warm day. Oakies are sometimes the best bait (perch), tough on the hook and many times one oakie will account for many fish. The leaves do not have to be oak. CRANE FLY LARVA is really what an oakie is. Good luck in your hunt. BTW not a lot of bait shops will stock them, so gettin' your own is always a good bet.
  2. You might want to search www.iceshanty.com
  3. We usually go for them in december after shotgun season when I already have venison in the freezer. Usually try to pick a warm day as the wife always goes and usually finds more than I do. We've had years when the creeks freeze early and you really want to avoid heavy ice if you can. Went out early once, maybe mid november, and didn't find too many. Usually take a 5 gal bucket, fill with leaves from the creek and count as we add grubs. Take enough leaves to feed them through the winter, in the basement. Always have grubs with us on the ice.
  4. BG, I found it on page 8 under "20 class brown". Correction- it weighed just under 20, 7 hours later. Funny how they get heavier with time!
  5. BG, if you search through the "pictures" section, I posted a 20 class brown about 2 years ago. It was caught by my son about mid september. Looks very close to the same length/girth. It weighed 20-21 on the water and 20 eight hours later at home. Hangs on the wall now. BTW,it was a male, which really surprised us.
  6. AMEN. Well said, Ray.
  7. Hey Eric, I have a few pics of HP when we were trollin' opposite east/west. I'll try to get them to you. I'd be grateful if you send that pic. We still want to get up a few more times before I'll be huntin' ducks in the NE zone early october.
  8. Hey Hook, whaddayamean my sabre ain't as pretty as Eric's? LOL! Mine's 2 foot shorter, a few years older and doesn't have that nice kicker pocket, it is blue. Maybe we can have a sabre parade/salmon drive this weekend. "DAYBREAK" on CH10.
  9. Great pics Eric. That's a great dad/son pic that will last a lifetime. Best we could do this derby was 27.5. Maybe next year. BTW we did put some good kings in the boat with the Maniac HP money fly.
  10. Congrats on a pair of Oak beauties. I believe those are the only salmon on the board from the Oak (?).
  11. Semper, check out myfishfinder.com. I think a lot of guys jig for lakers on Keuka. Nice perch, if you can find them. A real pretty lake.
  12. Elmer, go to the attheoak site for a good description of MUP. There's a ton of good info there.
  13. Don (chowbell), we fished the Oak fri 3-8pm. Started at the 24.5N per Earl "Bag Lady" 's advice. Hooked up quickly with a pair of steelies and my wife battled a mature king, only to be lost at the net, guess who was net man. We later ran to the 32N x15W, did a 22# King and some more steel, including a 13# steelhead taken by the missus. Get r done, NBK's, chrome e-chip with hammer were a few of the lures we ran. Riggers at 50 thru 70, wires out 150 to 210 (2 setting). Marked a lot of bait between 30-31N lines. Be back at it this weekend weather depending, got a nice 5 day hookup. DAYBREAK on CH10.
  14. Happy B-DAY ERIC, maybe we'll sing to you at the Oak tomorrow! (CH 10.) I think a 41# King would be appropriate. "Wish I wish, catch a BIG FISH".
  15. Great video Carl. Love to see kids on fish! I might get the grandkids onboard this season and have to think about a holder to the side of doghouse at transom.
  16. I would also check/replace the condensor.
  17. Thanks for the site MB.
  18. Anyone paint their blanks with glow paint? I have a few blanks I'd like to do. Where is a good source for white, green and blue glow paint? Thanks
  19. Ray, I can't say about Dunkirk but we did OK last fri night out of Sturgeon Point. Took a bunch of males to 4#. I thought the spawn was over but it looked like the spawn took place on the deck of the boat! I think it's still a night bite in shallow but soon we'll be out to the depths. Weather doesn't look too good for this weekend. I really don't want to play in 3 footers at 1am. But maybe the forecast is wrong.
  20. Here's the deal: I want to add a 2nd transducer to my port transom near the existing 'ducer. I want to mount to the port side of outdrive as some day a kicker will be going to the starboard. Anyone that runs twin ducers ever have a problem mounting them close together, same side? How much distance should be between? I will only be running one at a time as one will be back up, so frequencies are not an issue. Is it possible that running too close together could cause turbulence/bubbles? The old Raytheon V800 is going to have the company of a new DS600X. BTW, the install is for a Crestliner Sabre with an approx 8' beam. Thanks.
  21. SALUTE!!!!
  22. Thanks Mick.
  23. Thanks for the update Mick. I've run up as far as Captn's Cove in the past, early in the spring and had a heck of a time in the mud! It gets pretty shallow if you're not familiar with the bottom. I usually slip at Wiley's and don't get any further upstream that that. Do they put channel marker buoys in during the season?
  24. Anyone know if the launch dock(s) are in at either the state launch(west) or county launch(east) at the Oak? How 'bout the launch dock at the seabreeze at I-Bay? Browns or perch this weekend dependent on launch sites.
  25. Green water is good if it's there. Stitchin' the mudline is good advice too. I've heard it said that the muddy water is only a few feet deep then it clears below the mud? Anyone ever run a camera under that muddy H2O and bust that myth? I guess it all would depend on the conditions.
