  1. From my experience, it might not be the fleas but if you are handling any kings at all, there is something in their slime that really can irritate and swell an existing cut a bit.
  2. Just read this on my father's latest newsletter and thought is was worth sharing. Hunts for Healing There have been many special charter fishing trips aboard the Fish Doctor on Lake Ontario since 1982 when Carol and I earned our U.S. Coast Guard license and started charter fishing on the big lake, but none more special than a recent trip on June 18. That was the day when four courageous young warriors, wounded in battle in Iraq and Afghanistan fished with us as part of the “Hunts for Healing†http://www.huntsforhealing.com program. These four young men, age 21 to 25 were accompanied by two Hunts for Healing volunteers who mentored the fishing trip on June 18th.. These four warriors were a team, and they were with us to fish, and fish we did. Chris, had been in special ops in Irag, was captured and tortured, but survived. One of the Hunts for Healing mentors told me he had not been “out†in three years. Stoic, unsmiling, he had one tattoo, a small tear below the corner of his left eye. A 7 lb . rainbow, put a hint of a smile on his face. When you’re battling a nice trout, it’s hard to think about anything else. Derrick, out of the hospital for only four months, was only 21 and without doubt one of the toughest human beings I have ever met, missing a leg from a bomb, riddled with wounds, 129 operations later, a comrade named Jim, almost killed by a bomb, held him upright while he battled a nice lake trout. Derrick had been unable to sleep for more than an hour since leaving the hospital. After landing a lake trout, Derrick curled up on a bunk on the Fish Doctor and slept for 3 hours. Then there was 23-year old Josh, handsome, quiet, walking on someone else’s foot, but never complaining, even though he had recently lost his best pal, a golden retriever. Josh left us with the memory of boating a 7 lb. brown and an 8-week old golden puppy on his lap, compliments of Adirondac Goldens. These courageous Americans had never met before the fishing trip, but the comradery that was so evident during their stay was cemented by experiences on the battle field and after. The bond among them only they could understand. I heard not a single whine or complaint the entire trip. The opportunity for Fish Doctor Charters to host their trip was a privilege and a gratifying experience. Hats off to Hunts for Healing , the dedicated volunteers who make the nonprofit organization work, and the companies and folks who donate dollars to the program. Hunts for Healing offers selfless heroes a stepping stone through hunting and fishing to aid in the transition from intensive care units back to the outstretched arms of friends and loved ones. If you would like to sponsor a “Hunts for Healing†event or warrior, as we did go to http://www.huntsforhealing.org/sponsorship (Click to enlarge)
  3. You could always get a set of Wave Wackers for it too. http://www.wavewackers.com/
  4. Kids each caught their first walleyes. Really nice evening ride to cap off a great day.
  5. 24 North Coast or 24 Shamrock Grandslam. Just about impossible to find a freshwater one though. 25 Carolina Classic too.
  6. One on a rigger parked at about 15 feet and dritfed one for about 5 minutes on a bottom bouncer. Will work those a bit more the next time we give it a try.
  7. Cool pond Landshark. I live in Apulia Station and gave Deruyter a try yesterday PM. Made one quick troll to get the lay of the land and let the kids catch a few sunnies. Marked some nice fish though. On the harnesses, do you guys use natural blade colors or bright colors? I was surprised at how clear the water was.
  8. Looking for a spool of the 135# cable that came with the SNT units. I know a lot of guys didn't run it because it was lighter and I was hoping someone might have a spool around that they could sell.
  9. Fixed her up with the ol' belt sander Troutman. I did put the end caps on the back end of the track Jack. I have had a couple knobs come loose as well when trailering. By the way, anyone in the market for manual downriggers, there is none better than the current Big Jon model. (In my opinion of course) They are built on the Brute chassis and are seriously heavy duty. I purchased from the site sponsor Lord of the Riggers and his prices just can't be beat. Hopefully Big Jon will start buuilding their planer masts with the same spool mechanism as the manual riggers. Other item i went with on the setup was the Garmin 540S combo fishfinder/gps. Preloaded with charts and seems to be a really sweet unit. I have always had Garmin fishfinders and am really impressed with this one too.
  10. Check out the Brown Trout Tourney thread on the pictures page Gray.
  11. I just outfitted my boat with Traxtech stuff and am really impressed with all of it. I did buy a Bert's planer board mast and was not entirely impressed. When the pipe that the mast slides into was welded to the base, the base got warped and wouldn't even come close to sliding into the track. Could not have been checked before it left the factory. Either that or the traxtech track is much more beefier than the Bert's. Bought some Bert's plastic knnobs too and the plastic strips out on the threaded part really easy.
  12. Check out the laker on this link. 38.25# http://www.newzjunky.com/catch.htm
  13. We picked up this rig this Spring Andy. Everything brand new and got to rig it up the way I wanted. Having some fun fishing some different lakes this year. Didn't make sense to buy another 28 footer - when we get the big water bug we will just hop onto the Fish Doctor.
  14. Few pics from last weekend BT tourney. We had plenty of bites but could only land three. Emily tried to defend her title with a 9 pounder but came up a tad short.

  16. Greg, I have a couple of Berkely Blazers with new guides on them that I could part with. I had re-wrapped like 10 of those Power rigger rods for a guy a while back and I think they are pretty comparable, action wise, at least.
  17. Try disconnecting the power leads and use a set of jumper cables direct to the battery. If that doesn't work then look at the solenoid, etc.
  18. Wire line knot here. I've had cables break on Klinchers before. Never had the wire line knot break - ever. Fish Doctor has been using the knot for a number of years now too. Never an issue. I say save your money.
  19. I've got a couple you can have. Just pay for the shipping.
  20. Couple of Big Jon riggers for parts, one has auto stop pulley. Three extra motors. On complete Garmin mounting station w/ base, power cable and transducer. Fits Garmin 160, 240 fishfinders and GPS 125 and 185 combos. Free or best offer! Would rather you picked up somewher between Tully and Watertown.
  21. V4 Crossflow Powerhead. Splines on the cam shaft are stripped. Everything else okay with it. Evinrude Lower Unit with stripped splines on the upper drive shaft. These came off of a 1987 1.6L Sea Drive. Located a couple miles off of 81 at the Tully exit.
  22. Check out the reports page on the Fish Doctor site. Just saw some great info for spring fishing there that will help us all.
  23. There is no movement between the copper and the Spro swivel. That knot will last the life of your copper setup. We're talking decades here. The mono knot and backing knot should get retied once in a while. The backing knot we use now is a loop type knot that we tie with the actual loop a couple feet long so you have a length of doubled backing to hook your release to. Works really well. I'll see if I can find a picture of the loop know we use. The shrink tube over the swivel will add to the overall diameter and would make it tougher to get through most Okuma level winds. Shrink tube on the end of the haywire twist is not a bad idea at all. Just my $.02.
