  1. Stan..... Its all good brother...Wasn't bent in the least. Just really never heard of that term. Just like you I learn every time I go out. For the past 30 years Ive tried different baits, techniques, and presentations. Some worked, some did not. My way of thinking is how do you know it won't work if you didn't try it? Sometimes thinking out of the box can come up with a technique that will get you totally dialed in while the other boats are washing lures. My point is try new stuff......It sure sounds like you may be a pioneer in Salmonoid fishing in your parts. Way to go my man......
  2. Good luck Stan, Hope you guys get into em......
  3. Never heard of a dipsey referred to as a junk rig. I just call them fish catching implements. There are more days than not that a dipsey will outproduce a downrigger. I'll stick to what works for me.........
  4. Stan, The Scotty pinch pad rigger releases are the nuts. I like them and the blacks. Ive had some false releases on the blacks before, but not so many that I would be nervous. Thanks again about the lures. We are starting to get into some heavy duty musky weather here...Possibly snow on Tuesday......Between waterfowl, Deer, and Muskies, my fall is going to be jammed packed.....Tight lines.....
  5. Brian, Rochester had one way before the Oak and Sodus.....Typical of the area, the interest was low. I fished it for the last three years it was held. The number of participants was less and less every year till it eventually died.............We''l see what happens I guess.
  6. Stan That is what we called a deep dive down and out. What you do is set the dipsey on 0...So it dives straight down. Let it back about 80 ft or so. Then set out your down rigger to the 100 ft mark. That dipsey and bait should be down around 130ft give or take. Troll about 2.2 or 2.4. Don't use your wire line..LOL.. Make sure its on a mono rod..... Where we fish the water can be very clear. Then I might take a smaller dipsey set it on the farthest setting so it really goes away from the boat. I let it back about 30 ft then hook it up to my rigger. I usually run the rigger about 10ft above where I'm marking fish. Alot of times the vibration in the water from the cables or the rigger ball will scare the fish. This set up is called a "Down and Out". Some guys use size 0 dipseys. I tend to go with the quarter sized big john diver disks. Never did get those Siscos.....Good luck with that extreme depth trolling.
  7. Stan you can take a dipsey. Run it on a zero setting. Let it out 80 ft or so and then clip it onto the rigger. Send that sucker down to around 110 ft and your in the ballpark........ Its one hell of a release when a fish hits..LOl...Good luck
  8. Stan, That copper stuff is going to drive you crazy bro.....Like I said I own a couple of copper set ups, but mu bread and butter rigs are the 10 color lead cores. Good luck in the tournament............Matt
  9. I have a pretty good knowledge of dipsey rods. This year I broke one of my favorite St. Croix dipsey rods (10 ft M/H) I called St. Croix and gave them the model #. The guy said "Holy cow we stopped making that rod 14 years ago." There is something to be said about the St. Croix rods. Anyway I used some 10 m/h Uglies for a while and I really didn't like them. I have since went to the Okuma 10ft M/H dipsey rods(Not the wire rods, just the plain ole dipsey rods) The action on the Okumas was pretty much the same as the St. Croixs. I like a little more limber rod on my wire set ups, and the Okumas fit the bill. I am totally satisfied with them.....
  10. Yea Jerry......We did some big numbers this year. A lot of fin clipped fish. That was nice to see. I'll be at the Oct. meeting with bells on brother......
  11. The reason that those chickens float is because their air bladders expand on the way up from the depths. I wouldn't consider myself an avid chicken chaser, but on occasion, I'll drop the bells and nuts to the bottom in 100. When I release them, I gently squeeze the fish's stomach and you can hear the fish burping. I then hold the fish by the tail and place him overboard. When I feel the fish kicking his tail, I shove him straight down in the water and 99% of the time the fish swims on his own back to the deep. I seldom get floaters. The key is getting that air bladder deflated....Hope this helps......Matt
  12. Rick...I can catch kings too.....Just like catching those brown spotted beauties.......
  13. I went from a 19 Thompson I/o to a 31 twin screw Baha....I had some fast learning to do. After you get the hang of it, it is extemely easy to control when docking.
  14. One of the many outstanding Irondequoit Bay anglers
  15. Moto the 2nd place guys were not there.......You might have to keep calling or emailing to find out what the deal is.
  16. Blue....Thats what happens. Especially this time of year when guys are fishing close to shore. Come to Rochester and you'll witness some combat trolling at its finest. It sucks that it happened to you. Some people have no sense of responsibility. There is a guy in Roch that has cut me off(I had a fish on both times), forced me into shallow water..." Sorry just trying to get to my waypoint." a real for himself kind of guy....I know how he is now, and I avoid him whenever possible. Just today I had a smaller boat cut right behind me. I anticipated his move and brought in my 10 color before he cut me off. ....I feel your pain.
  17. Steve....I used Ira Jones this year....He is the man!
  18. Absolutely Skeiner...... I'll have a new bunch for next year. Going to order 8 new ones for next year and retire my Great Lakes systems..... They were awesome rods and I'd hate to bust one of them since they don't make them anymore. I busted one of my St. Croix dipsey rods. I called them up with the model # and the guys said they hadn't made that rod in 14 years.....he was right, thats how long I had my St. Croix's.
  19. I took the class with ScottB and he was exactly right...poor organization. I was on top of my license and "cut a couple of corners" to save time, but I didn't even get my License till the first week of July. Are you kidding me? As far as the class......Good Luck! Its pretty tough....I think I failed every practice test we had before the final. Oh yea did I mention math? You better get your algebra on! The Rules of the road is the most important. Study that because you can only miss 3 out of the 30 questions in this section. The chart plotting is tough too. They will tell you that you won't be ready for the exam till the night before. They are exactly right. Oh yea the two guys who teach the Rochester class are total Sailboaters. In our class, Legacy , me, and ScottB sat in the back of class saying " Screw the jibs and tacking...can I just run some downriggers and dipseys?"
  20. Moto thats the same fish......If you hold a stout fish like I did in the first pic, it really shows off the belly. Up and down tends to make it look longer....The first pic is after the fish sat in a cooler for 4 hours
  21. This could be HUGE...Rochester...Huuuugggge!
  22. Just bought some rigger and dipsey rods and I can say I was pleasantly suprised. The rigger rods have a lot of play in them and you can really get them doubled over on a downrigger, yet they have the backbone to handle big fish. The dipsey(Not the wire made ones with the roller guide) are awesome. Reminds me of the old St. Croix rods I used to use for wire. The 10ft m/h action is sweet. I heated and removed the tip and put on a twilly....all set......Ive always been a Diawa man...Heartlands and 47LC's , but these rods are impressing me more and more......
