  1. Caught this male spawning brown last night just after dark on a glow/orange Yeck 3/4 oz. casting spoon. He has a significantly humped back... is that normal?? JAM
  2. I didn't get better during the afternoon. My dad and I trolled off the pier from 25 to 50 FOW from 1 til 4 and had just one rip on a chartruese e-chip/ chartreuse/black fly on the 7 color leadcore in about 30 FOW. Lots of marks, but all tightlips. JAM
  3. I was driving across the Driving Park bridge at noontime today and a kid was carrying two pretty good sized matures and a fishing pole. They are definitely running up to the falls... JAM
  4. I use Monster cable LCD TV cleaner. It works great. http://www.target.com/gp/search/601-692 ... %20cleaner JAM
  5. Fishinman, He would be in 2nd in the youth salmon division, if they keep track of anything below 1st. (Not sure how the youth division works.) I called the LOC office and they said to go ahead and weigh it even though it doesn't come close to getting on the overall board (29.04 entry point at the moment. Wow -- some bigguns this fall!) What a great thrill we had today in 3-4 footers out there. My 84 year old dad was driving the boat as my son battled the fish while I helped him wind the pole through the other lines out there, and eventually to the net. The fish came off the port rigger and crossed all the lines before we pulled it out of the water on the starboard side. Thanks for the come back... JAM
  6. We fished Braddocks this morning and boated one small rainbow and this 25 lb. King, reeled in by my 11 year old son. It hit a white crushed glow 11" Hot Spot flasher and Mirage G-fly off the 100 foot rigger over 135 FOW. We weighed it in at Mitchels a couple hours later as a youth entry for the LOC. The temps were still completely whacked out... JAM
  7. They have add a lines at Captains Cove at Oak Orchard.
  8. Upgrady, Nice report! Great job out there. Thanks for the comeback on the radio regarding the down temp. When I went to put the new battery in my probe, I had some trouble getting the contacts to connect. I gave a little extra push and pop, splash, the only fresh 9v I had on board went straight to the bottom! Anyway, fished the marks from 120 to 160 off Braddocks with my dad for a couple hours and went 2 for 3, with the 'big one' busting my dipsy leader and taking an e-chip/a-tom-mik fly with him... Talk about a day of technical difficulties. It was just about perfect weather out there, so dad and I had a nice day anyway. Thanks again for the help. JAM
  9. Nice fish. What did it come on? How big? Where? Great pic. Nice lookin rig. JAM
  10. Captain Carl, I just saw your info on the Moonshine Lures Pro Staff page, and it all makes sense to me now. So you're a full time Biology teacher with a major passion for fishing! Way cool! Thanks for the great posts. I'm really into the science and physics of what's going on out there in the lake. Now if we could just figure out that temperature/wind/thermocline dynamic we'd be all set! Good luck out there. JAM
  11. Great reply CBish. I was guessing right regarding which was which as I've caught both, but had no idea why. This helps considerably! THANKS! JAM
  12. I'm guessing this has been discussed, but can't find a thread... What's the difference between the two? Are there domestic rainbows in Lake Ontario, or just steelhead? thanks! JAM
  13. I couldn't get out on the boat tonite, so I decided to tape up a couple lures with a new pattern to try next time out. Just for kicks, I took the NK28 version of my new pattern out to the pier to throw a few casts to see how it looked when I pulled it through the water. Well, lo and behold, this 35+ inch Northern inhaled it, and put up a fight which included 3 long runs and two above surface head shakes. The tape is bright green and copper flake. The eyes (front and back) are yellow prism. The NK28 spoon is silver with a gold cup. Hope it works as well on the Kings and Steelies... JAM Here's the fish and the bloodied up lure:
  14. The lodic is that the spoon represents a wounded baitfish and isn't necessarily swimming "forward" as it wobbles. Salmonids like to eat their prey head first, so the idea is that the eye at the hook end of the spoon gets the fish to hit the business end and produces more hook ups... Sounds good? Anyone got data on swivel end vs. hook end eyes? Some manufacturers only put the eyes on the hook end (Pro King, etc.).
  15. I understand you've ordered the Green Crinkle - a good choice. When you get the go ahead for "one more", I might suggest the #T100 Skein Machine. A couple weeks ago, I ran it behind a crushed glow/green e-chip and had a good fish on it within a few minutes of putting it out on the wire dipsey, four times in a row... Including a 12# Steelie, a 16# Laker, and two kings, one at 14#. It was ON FIRE and unbelieveable how fast it was generating the bites across different species. JAM
  16. Frank, Most of our action was on the dipsies, setting 2.5 with 205 feet out. I started at 180 out and nothing fired till I went deeper. Try changing to 2.5 setting and going out 200+. My couple of low rigger hits were 85 down, with a down temp of 41-43, out over 180 FOW. I think there were a few smaller steelies up higher, but our good fish all came at the low end of the usual temp zone. JAM
  17. Saturday morning, I took out my Dad and two of his buddies (none registered in the LOC derby) and we had a fantastic trip. I caught a 12+ lb. Steelie, Dad got a 16+ lb. Laker, and Bruce got a nice teen King. The Steelie and the Laker would have made the leaderboard for sure... Of course, Friday afternoon my wife (who is registered) and I went out and boated one small Steelie... figures. We caught all these pictured fish in 160 to 190 FOW on the wire 205 ft back with the green glow e-chip and Skein machine A-TOM-MIK fly. We went 9 for 11 overall, with most of the fish on flasher/flys, and a couple on spoons (NK28 O's alewife, NK Mag green glow, black silver hologram) WHAT A MORNING! JAM
  18. Thanks for the pic and the great advice! Good luck in the ProAms. Jammer
  19. Thanks Billy! Any chance you could post a pic of the setup? BTW - I miss Fairhaven. My folks sold their place at the very south end of the bay a couple years ago. I've been here out of Braddocks since. Congrats on the LOC fish. Nice job.
  20. I have been running a 12 lb Cannonball below my recently added Moor Subtroll probe and feel that the excessive blowback is giving me much lower than true downspeed, as the probe is angling down as I go faster. My indicated downspeed has never ever been equal to or greater than my GPS speed. I know this is just wrong. (Sometimes the down speed indicated actually drops a lot as I hit the gas to speed up and the cables swing back.) So--- I got a 15 lb chrome shark weight which I'm hoping will help a lot. Questions: 1. Since the shark has only one eye, what is the best way to rig the release? 2. How does the chome attactor of the shark affect best distance to the flasher fly? (I usually use a Spin Dr. on my lower probe rigger.) Any other tips I should know regarding using the chrome shark or to get less of the blowback speed impact on my Subtroll? Thanks! JAM
  21. Oh, I see. Kinda like when you have a slider fixed with a rubber band a few feet above the release. I thought maybe it was kinda like "fupped". Thanks Ray. JAM
  22. I've seen this term a few times lately and don't have a clue what it means... "mupped"?? Can someone explain? thanks! JAM
  23. Thanks guys. Billy, great knot site. BTW, love those brown pictures from inside Fairhaven Bay. My folks lived at the very very south end of the bay for 20 years. We (with my dad) mostly fished the edge of the weeds in the bay for northerns and the lake for smallies. Nice to see the browns come in. Now, I'm running out of Braddocks and am just two years into fishing for trout and salmon. Needless to say, I am obsessed. Really appreciate the great tips you and the others on the board have provided! JAM
  24. A few more leadcore questions: What is the best length/type of leader? If you spool up 200 yds of leadcore, does it keep dropping 4-5 ft per color past 10 colors? What's the best knot for the connection of the core to the leader? thanks! JAM
