Fat Trout replied to freespirit1's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
Before 1996 the salmon river (main hatchery river) would go down to 50 cubic feet per second of flow....or less during the summer. During salmon season they would yo-yo it from 1500 cubic feet down to 100....power generation thinking, not actual river management. Fish would get stranded in the extreme. In spring / summer fry would get stranded and/or overheated. In 1996 after some agreements with then Niagra Mohawk (now Brookfield Power). they made adjustments to the equipment to allow for minimum summer base flows of 185cfs in the summer + 3 or 4 weekends where they would bump the river up for kayakers & other users (provided there was enough water in the reservoir). In addition they had "in season" agreement for 285CFS minimum. The yo-yo'ing cut back significantly (compared to prior). The (somewhat) stabilized system allowed for actual natural reproduction....granted, good years vs bad years depending on actual weather conditions but at least there was a chance where before the summer heat and piss trickle nuked whatever managed to survive and hatch. I fish the river a fair amount...a few years ago we were getting salmon returns that could be compared as hatchery or natural due to a fin clipping program they did for a few years. I think around 4 years ago it was a really good year but the amazing thing was the endless # of salmon that came in from mid august through mid sept. to the river were 90% unclipped. Seemed like the early fish were the naturals to some degree. Either way, it made the "natural" fish very noticable vs the hatchery fish. -

Unfortunately 5-8 million didn't happen in the 90's in NY. You compared against the 1.8 for NY now so thats what I assume you mean. I fished then, would have been nice. 2.7 million in 1995. cut down to just over a million in 1996 after Michigan's first crash. brought back up later in the 1990's but not exceeding 2 million. Base water flows in 1996 started the natural reproduction now estimated at a number equal to 50% of the stocking total. -

With the exception of the fact that the Salmon river is where the hatchery is (drawing the late summer / fall kings)......Mexico Bay has always been and will always be a crap shoot with a lot of head scratching on where the fish are. Some springs, the wheel of fortune that are the lake currents deliver a bunch of bait and fish with it in the spring. Otherwise yeah I give it to the western ports for consistency. -

The end of the side compartment can be pulled out. Behind that are a couple of pieces of styrofoam that can be pulled out. At that point you can reach back. You'll probably need someone to help from the top while your reaching in. There are wires on the driver side but you can reach in and keep them out of the way. Its a **** I'm not gonna lie....but its doable. Just be prepared for some cursing.

Well your in luck. I have the same boat and put rails on the back. Mine are Cisco but same thing really. My rails are way shorter than yours....24" I think. I also have them mounted further back. Far enough back that most or all of the rail is behind where the side compartment door is. Looking at your picture and your rail setup....thats your problem I think. You have long rails and the downrigger is in the area where the compartment door is. that makes the whole thing less stable right there. Attached is a pick I had on my phone. You can see the downriggers and a rod holder just behind the downriggers. I've run them with 12 and 16# balls like you see there with no flex issues. I also have large fender washers underneath. I'll bet you can still have the long rails. Just put the riggers toward the very back and not up the side. I hope this helps.

I've been fishing out of Mexico for a Looong time. It has always been spotty compared to the rest of the lake. Some years better than others. Reasons are various and many already mentioned. Primary thing it has going for it is the salmon river and staging fish coming into the bay. -
Cannon Mag 10's started acting up?
Fat Trout replied to lakertaker97's topic in Open Lake Discussion
I don't know how you are connected to your battery. But check for corrosion at any ring terminals on the battery. A little sandpaper might fix you up. Also on the quick connects between downrigger and power source (assuming you have those 2 prong connections). Could be a loose terminal too. Had that with my truck once. made things haywire. -
Its too bat that a lot of people don't understand that If you're running > 300 behind your boat there is a responsibility that is on you too as an operator. Pick your conditions for running the big stuff and understand the risks.

where are the salmon
Fat Trout replied to Jose's topic in New York Fishing Reports - Lake Ontario (South Shore)
I just have to respectfully add that that the "cooler take" recreational and charter is taking from a smaller percentage which are those fish who passed all of the predation and other issues and became viable to catch and keep. Not 70,000 out of millions but something smaller. I remember a thread on here a few months back, perhaps last fall where there was a pounding focus on tributary impact with browns. Lake guys pointing out the trib impact. These numbers are what keep us guessing. Be it browns, kings, steelies or lakers, dead fish don't get caught again. I think everyone can agree on that -

Yeah I hear you but we all know only a fraction become adults. Fishing the salmon river I'm fishing the primary return stream. There just aren't millions of salmon going up that sucker.....not even a half mil....I can assure you of that. Jeeze last year they were having a hard time getting the 2K hens they needed at the hachery to fill quota. Just to clarify too...I really wasn't trying to make it a charter comment. Only that there are a lot of perspectives. Your math helps too but as you're saying, where the heck are they going. -

I wouldn't go to idiotic. There are just different perspectives and some folks are only part of one side so they only see that one side. We all just need to understand there is a lot to understand about what goes on. His comment comes in as sort of the same tributary fishing vs lake fishing sort of comment. I fish both the lake and river and have done so for a long time. I always love the tributary guys who bust balls about keeping trout from a stream.......(lake guys too who point at the tributary guys). I've told river guys....You should see what leaves in white coolers daily from the boats without even a second look. I've also told them that is can be hard as hell to sucessfully release a fish from a large boat especially in the summer. There are also scenes of complete and total destruction in streams when browns / steelies go into some smaller tribs. I've seen things I choose to forget. Its a put and take fishery....bottom line. And yes cooler loads of fish do add up. This spring was pretty awesome as I understand from Rochester & west for kings. I read here or somewhere that someone knew someone who chartered who had put 700 kings in the box.....700!!!! and that was by like June or so. Cut that in half for the bullcrap factor and thats still a lot of fish. For the average lake user (be it ignorant or educated to the lake), hear large numbers like that from one boat and know that there are lots of lake users (Rec. and Charter) from Niagara to Henderson and it doesn't take a math wizard to start to formulate some potential catch numbers (and opinions). I'll add that I kept hearing about how good the 2 year class was and know a lot of guys were finishing out their trips searching for those while the lockjaw matures were hard to come by. I have to admit I started to wonder how next years class will really be if it started out great but got pounded. I guess we'll see. Just saying. -

I fish the lower river (DSR) quite a few days Sept /October. I guess it was 3-4 years ago or so when tons and I mean TONS of fish came in early. At the same time we knew about the fin clipping project so we could tell hatchery from natural. From 3rd week in August straight through 3rd week in September 90% of the fish that came through were unclipped (ie natural). They were the early fish. At the last week of Sept and into first week of Oct....here came the hatchery fish, nearly all had the adopise fin clip. As far as the reservoir. There are 2...upper and lower. The upper is in Redfield and the lower is just north of Altmar. The upper has the bigger volume larger surface area but as a whole is relatively shallow. They feed from the upper to the lower Res and the river is fed from the dam at the lower res. The lower res is relatively small. Neither is capable of a cold water bottom feed they just warm up too much based on lack of overall depth / volume. There has definitely been a larger presence of early fish in the last 10 years. Those of us who fish the river (and I've been doing that for 30 years) see these early birds as the natural fish (confirmed pretty well by the clipping project which is now over). These are the ones you see dead up through the river when the water is warm. They started the base flows in the summer (@ 185CFS) back in 1996. Its taken a while but the natural reproduction has picked up steam. It varies of course.....but 3 years ago (if I remember right) It was shocking how many fish came in early....just crazy. every day was loads of fish...for a month and none of them were clipped. -
What was it last year? I have not fished it in a while as I go out solo a lot in recent years or have guys that come up once. As I recall back in the old ESLO days it was $40. I looked this year to see if they happened to change the rule against fishing without a partner / witness, I saw the $40 and didn't think twice. BTW I fish the Lake Winnepesaukee derby.....they charge $40 and the prizes are not nearly as good. Granted we do pretty well

Cortland Flea Flicker is good BUT.......
Fat Trout replied to henrybud's topic in Open Lake Discussion
For what its worth. All lines can twist if your not using quality swivels and at times multiple swivels or even bead chains when the lures or flashers call for it. Flea flicker is more noticeable because it has an oval shap so you can litterally see twist when it occurs. I use 30# flea flicker....no problem at all. Also, When I do have an issue (such as twist caused by a tangle or lure that twists more than the swivel can handle)....with ANY line, you can untwist by cutting the lure and any swivels off and dragging behind the boat while trolling or at a little speed. straightens it right out and works like a charm. I cringe and laugh when I hear people toss line because of twist so i thought I'd share that tip if it is helpful to anyone. -

new line counter reels
Fat Trout replied to Fat Trout's topic in Classifieds - Buy, Sell, Trade or Rent
Im in Northern NJ (07821) but have a camp in the Mexico / Pulaski NY area that I go to every other weekend or so. -
I have the following linecounter reels for sale, new unused. Pics attached. Qty (2) Cabelas Depthmaster Gold linecounter (DMG-45). New In box, spare handle etc. Capacities: 20/580yds 25/430yds 30/330yds. $90/ea + postage which looks to be about $6-7 ea. depending on where its going. Qty (2) Roddy Hunter 191 Linecounter Capacities 18/460yds 20/335 yds 25/275yds These are spooled with what looks like 20lb. $35/ea + postage I got these as prizes but honestly have enough gear of this size. I also have (2) Cabelas 9' dipsy rods that I got with the DMG's. DM-DD-90M 9' 12-30#. If someone wants the (2) DMG reels I'll sell the rods to go with them for $5 ea.+ postage. Otherwise I'll just keep the rods as its just not worth it to try to sell / ship cheap rods. The DMG's look really nice but I never heard of the Roddy Hunters before & they are obviously low end. They came on a fiberglass downrigger combo rods that isn't worth postage to ship it. I'm just gonna keep those too and beat 'em up. PM me or email @ [email protected]. Give me a zip and I'll check on postage. Kevin
