  1. Powder Mills hatchery is a privately owned hatchery. It is not interested in making money. It is mostly interested in letting children enjoy the outdoors. Our king stocking emergencies are not their emergencies. Powder Mills is mostly the goodwill enterprise of one Rochester industrialist and his philantropy is towards keeping an old hatchery alive and keeping kids happy, so including this hatchery in stocking kings (which is mostly done for people who can afford to troll) is not what they are interested in. A few years ago I tried to raise their interest towards stocking I-creek with atlantics and the they did not even bother answering my requests.
  2. Powder mills and Caledonia are both VHS free and the DEC wants to keep it that way. In order for them to stock kings they would have to get VHS free fry. Altmar is infected. The alternative is west coast fry. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  3. This may be completely different, but did you go over the lower unit and gear to make sure there is nothing wrong on that end? It can also be that one bank or maybe even one cylinder is not firing because of bad wiring between distributor and plug. And then there is the coil which may seem fine when tested cold, but may be defective when it is hot.
  4. I wonder what would happen if we mixed fresh caught eggs and sperm in buckets and let it go in or near gravel beds like for instance Irondeqoit creek. If we only have 10 people do 2 buckets each we should have tens of thousands fertilized eggs in the creeks. That should add a few hundred salmon that could start a logarithm that ends up in the tens of thousands and beyond.
  5. What is sounds like is timing. As you increase speed, the timing should advance just a bit. It is a very easy check which you can easily do yourself, Check your timing at 700,1500,2000,and 3500 and see if it is according to the book. if it does not advance after 3000 than you should advanve your timing possibly at 700 ( if you have electronic ignition and check with a shunt) . With electronic ignition the advance is more than with points so bear that in mind.
  6. That is part of a king setup.
  7. Forget about kings, they fizzled out this year. Go for Cohos, they are about to start staging in roughly 150 to 200 FOW. The ones that I have caught so far are healthy and carry no lamprey scars.
  8. . It beats getting fired by a certain duck and then having to spit the lure and dieSent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  9. These are the older type of Big Jon downriggers with the 4 foot extensions and the springs. They have Roemer releases. These riggers are in good shape. I will put some 6 or 8 pound downrigger balls to go along and a happy troll trolling plate in fair shape. ( it has a small crack). This should be a great setup for walleye fishing The price is $150 for the whole package. Postage is possible but probably expensive given the shape and weight of the package. Pickup in Rochester or New Haven/ Mexico point is a better idea.
  10. That must be the biggest striper ever caught in Lake Ontario
  11. You know I just had to do it. It does feel a bit strange to haul a boat about 200 miles while the Genny river launch is less than six miles from my house. A point which my son mentioned a few times while we were traveling. Anyway, that 35 pounder is still in the water waiting to have it out with us, so weather permitting we should try to hook into her this Sunday. We should leave the dock around five so we won't get stuck in a traffic jam at the mouth.
  12. Maybe they they don't want Gambler to win the big prize every year.
  13. We were close to the trench. we caught everything on seasick wobbler spoons and cut bait. The big hit that got away was on 400 copper pulling a Yozuri 6 inch stick bait made for tuna fishing. I just tried it out,but it was one hit and nothing for the rest of the day on that one
  14. Not being able to fish from "Just Horsin Around" this Saturday,I decided to bring my own rig,"Dutch Treat" to the Little Salmon River launch. It was an adventure. We left Rochester around 3.30 in the AM and after the compulsary stop at the Dunkins Donuts in Oswego we arrived at the Launch around 5.30 AM. I have never seen that many fishing rigs in so many shapes and colors so full of excited fishermen at such an ungodly hour. The river held a steady stream of boats going out to the lake while the launch witnessed a very busy double launching of almost exclusely well disciplined fast launches into the river. We launched along with another hundred boats and by 5.45 we were on the lake where there were lights of fishing boats as far as the eye could see. Once out,we headed north into deep water in front of the northern dunes where we figured it would be quiet, but even there 13 miles north of port there was combat fishing, so we trolled farther north leaving all the other boats behind. As for the fishing. No we did not get the 35 pounder that we had so carefully prepared for,we did not even get a 20 pounder, but we ended up with 3 salmon in the high teens and 3 steel head in the six pound range. When we came back around 1pm most people were still out trying for the big one so it was easy to get the boat out. All in all a nice ,albeit choppy, day on the lake. Cornelis.
  15. Because they can
  16. Another boat you should look at is the Steiger Craft Chesapeake with bracket. It is a 23 footer (without the bracket) and has a nice pilot house and a decent cuddy. Although it is fiber glass, it is still towable. If I win the LOC derby I will order one.
  17. They are called: Starcraft 221 Bracket
  18. The boat itself is a 22 footer, but the extension adds another good 3 foot (including engine). There is decent sleeping room in the cuddy ,but it is not a Marriot hotel. Here is another one in action.
  19. That is a 2007 Starcraft Islander
  20. That is fantastic news!! Let's hope that little kicker will be back on your rig before the salmon season is over!
  21. The Beverage Baron in Penn Yan sells live alewives, locally known as sawbellies
  22. The OMC and the Mercruiser 3 liters are both GM blocks, but the manifold and other parts are a bit different. The Mercruiser is thought to be the better engine it is still built today. There are many good second hand Mercruiser 140 3 liter engines with all the improvements that were made over the years. I am not sure that the gear cases are the same, but the mercruiser gear cases are widely available. Anyway if that old beast of yours was in salt water, then you should not waste money on it ,because the possible damage that was done to the manifold and block will come back to bite you in the behind.
  23. Exactly. Most commercial people using this engine use the SPL model. In this case SPL means "Keep It Simple" so it can't break down.
  24. That's the book,not the engine.
  25. The last electric shift 125 johnson outboards were made in 1972. Also the HP rating was taken at the drive shaft, not the propeller, which effectively leaves you with around 110 horse at the propeller. It is a very well built trustworthy engine.
