  1. Sold 3/22/12 Sylvan 17ft aluminum canoe for sale. This is a typical aluminum canoe, no rivet issues and no leaks but the typical bumps and bruises that come with being beached or subject to fall windstorms. This is the perfect addition to a camp, cottage, pond or for taking a casual tour up the creek. Asking $300.00. Located in Dunkirk NY. Pictures were taken sitting on the trailer and no, the trailer does not come with it. Thanks for looking
  2. this is not my boat but a 1600 is a 16 ft-further backed up by the fact it only has the 50hp on it.
  3. You can also look around for a regular 12 ft cartop-just have to find the right one because some are very low sided. Also a 12-14 v-bottom boat or pram is not going to weight that much and if you found one with a trailer it can be towed with just about any small vehicle. After you put something on top of a car for a couple trips, experience may tell you that a trailered boat is much more convenient.
  4. Don't know where you live or how far you want to travel. I would keep my eye on craigslist, for example there was a recent posting on the finger lakes link for a 17 superfisherman. Good boat, I had a 98 17 and an 85 18.
  5. The best chance for limited wind and minimizing the chance for blow-off's is the last couple weeks of July and the first two weeks of August. Usually it is so warm there is very little breeze. In addition, you can find areas that are adjacent to bays or creeks for your point of entry or as someone stated above make sure you are close to the finger lakes as a back up. I have been going to Lake Ontario for over 25 years and on most trips there is at least one blow off day. And it doesn't matter if you are trailering a freighter on a day like that.
  6. Going back to the 1970's Trailer Boats did several motor swaps on i/o's usually moving up from a four cylinder to an eight cylinder and keeping the lower unit from the four. Switching out the prop was the solution to the gearing or rpm issues.
  7. Been there every year since it started. There are deals to be had and if you are interested in any of the used equipment, you need to get there first thing-it goes quickly and there has always been a good crowd in the am.
  8. I bought an 86 last year, someone re-did the interior five years ago and the boat sat. Needed the transom done last year. Found a used Mercury 90 four stroke for it last year. Need to repaint it this year and get some canvas work done. These are functional boats-can handle the big lakes but can be used on the small ones and can be towed by anything that can pull 1500 pounds or so.
  9. As you specified no cuddys, my suggestion would be a 19 aluminum fish and ski boat, meaning open bow with full windshield. Those are made by Starcraft, Crestliner, Lund, Sylvan and many more. Outboard powered, is very light to tow and fuel efficient.
  10. When you looked at the inside rim and see it brown you learned way back when not to over do it with the grease gun. I have used both brown and blue grease, there is no need for lithium grease. I inspect bearings by spinning the tires a couple times a year-for the past couple years I have been launching forty or fifty times a year or more and have not had a problem. Being around boat trailers for nearly four decades I have only known of two failures in my immediate family and friends trailers, one with the bearing nut tightened too tight and one just a bearing failure. I have had more bearings fail on my current Trailblazer than on any trailer I have owned.
  11. that must be the reason why some vehicles like roll-off units have not for hire on the side, those that belong to an individual for their own use etc.
  12. I made this attempt in 2004, not tackle specifically but sports equipment and the like. It was in Western New York. You need to invest a lot of money to get your store looking customer friendly and unique. The market is tough and margins aren't that great. Captains Cove has been for sale for over a year and Narby's has had to have been on the market for a number of years(I am thinking close to a decade or more). That would give me pause.   13. My understanding is that it only applies to commercial applications in NYS. The guys I know that have numbers are commercial contractors for example.
  14. in the 20-22 range in the past twenty years, most around here are Crestliners, Lunds, and Starcrafts. There were also Sylvans, Smokercrafts and some Sea Nymphs. And on the rare occasion, Grumman and Princecraft.
  15. Have posted on this before. I have used a regular Mariner 9.9 on a 23 Grady White Gulfstream for the past four years. It is the wide body 9 ft wide one. Have used this on Lake Erie and have never had to use the big motor to keep up. Has pushed it all over the lake in all kinds of water-have also had to use it to come in, in an emergency. Keep in mind the Hydra Sports has a little more weight so it is not riding high and pushed by the wind. You could use your 15 four stroke of the Crestliner with no issues. Years and years ago Trailer Boats did a test on outboards 6-9.9 mounted on brackets there was very little difference in terms of mph on top end speed. I have not been on a boat with a high thrust so I can't comment on it.
  16. For what it is worth I have used a 9.9 Mariner 4-stroke on a 23 Grady White Gulfstream, the wide body(over 9 ft wide) and it has pushed that boat all over Lake Erie in all kinds of wave action-never have had to start the big motor to assist-so I 9.9 HT should work fine.

  18. I never was a vendor there but I can say this even 4 or 5 years ago, shows like this were costly for the vendors to attend and were questionable as to whether you covered costs. The economy for retailers has been tough since 2005, when gas crossed $3.00 per gallon the first time.
  19. Cranking battery will work fine-as described you have nothing which is a significant drain like an electric motor.
