  1. www.talkeetnafishingguides.com/ abcmotorhomes.com You have the advantage of time. Book your camper early. We used this place back in 2005 and they send me flyers every year around december that offer 40% off if you book in the fall for the following year. They are very close to Anchorage Airport and if you arrive after they close, they leave the camper open for you to sleep in. Also been in business for decades. The talkeetna site gives some good info on flies and run timing. Might be a little different if you head south of Anchorage. I'd suggest a guide for the 1st day, just to beat the learning curve and maximize your time, they'll also know all the regs for that area. We did a drop off to clear creek. Be warned, if they drop you off, they give you a "approximate" time they will pick you back up. My fiance was freaking out when they were 4 hours late picking us up... fresh bear tracks didn't help the situation. Don't pass a gas station without fueling up, there might not be another for a hundred miles or more. Take the bus Through Denali, and book it in advance, they fill up quick. Personal vehicles are only allowed so far into the park, there is an abundance of wildlife beyond where you can drive. Again money well spent. Pick up a recent copy of the Alaskan Milepost. Shows highways and attractions along them. Good tool in planning your trip. Vibrax spinners in orange and green were the hot lures for salmon and pegged beads were the go to for trout. Be very careful if you venture off any beaten path...unlike Gill T, I had a few close encounters with bears. One was in the river near our campground at Talkeetna, another was on the Russian river where a man was attacked the day before. In July, you'll want to take bug spray..
  2. best price I could find was moodeals.com minn kota also has a rebate right now on new ones.
  3. Bought a 9.8 back in 2010 and it's been great. Online outboards has the best price I could find back then. Might want to check out the suzuki too, they have a fuel injected model.
  4. May is generally a good month to fish the west end. Niagra bar to Olcott.
  5. Run my 300 coppers on 40's but they are tight and only have 150 yards 30 power pro backing. I would go to 50's for 300.
  6. Gator posted about a guy on ebay a couple years back had the 40.s for 125, looking back that was 2011. Picked the 30/s up 2 years ago off another ebay guy for around the same price. Got one from wheeling cabelas last saturday for 124.95, damaged box but the reel is spotless/new. be patient, you have a while til spring. You can get them anytime for around 170, but they do pop up now and again cheap. Maybe make the trip to the lotsa show in January, might find a good deal on them there.
  7. I love the high speed retrieves and anyone that's been aboard my boat feels the same about the saltists. Agree 100% with Rick, not sure there's a negative to fast retrieve, especially in the spring when the kings charge the boat...many days I can't reel fast enough even with the high speed. Personal preference I guess. Check the bargain cave at cabelas and watch ebay. I've managed to pick all of my saltists up for less than $130 apiece brand new. Be patient and you will find them reasonable
  8. Just catching up on the thread...congrats to you guys that connected...stay with it Matt...every bow hunter has been there. If you're planning on keeping the lease for a while, I'd suggest a couple small openings planted with fruit trees (5 or 6 in each field/shooting lane and get trees that drop late). Initial investment $100 or so per field, but trees bear fruit for decades and these little plots are irresistible to deer.
  9. The poacher was caught with one in the truck, the other on his garage floor. A little angry about the poaching, but more disappointed that none of my friends got a crack at one of them. Passed a few good shooters waiting for one of the giants...but hey that's a choice we make, right. Chas, keep the faith. We have one with 3 legs around that never shows up until the end of October. Haven't seen him since December, and he showed up last night. No one sees him...anywhere.
  10. Awesome buck DD. I'd be sitting somewhere close to that cam in the AM!
  11. Sorry for your loss, it happens and it sucks when it does... but I wouldn't say it's a negative rage story, more a bad archery experience. No one can say for sure that another type of head would've made much difference, but a couple practice shots would've let you know your sights were off 5", which admittedly was the real issue here. Regular practice is essential throughout the season, even if it's just an arrow or two. I'd also be looking into why your sights were off, loose sight, bent rest etc....just walking to a stand or pulling your bow up can cause things to move or get bent, maybe something got caught on a branch, or bumped on a tree.... also make sure your bow is still in tune, especially if you make the move to fixed blades, they are not as forgiving. Not trying to kick a guy that's down, just trying to help for the future. Also agree with Total Chaos...almost had to contact bone somewhere and nervous animals do react much faster than your arrow. If you lost confidence in the rage, by all means try a fixed blade head, just be sure your bow is on target, tuned, and you have good arrow flight. FYI your story made me take a couple shots in the yard last night before going on stand. All was good, but you just never know. Good luck out there and hopefully you'll get another crack at that buck, if he went 1000 yards without laying down and you weren't pushing him....he's still chasing does.
  12. There's a sea nymph GLS 19.5 on Buffalo Craigslist. I see several of them on Erie and Ontario. Had one for a few years and it was a perfect all around boat, great lakes/river/fish/ski. Relatively inexpensive too.
  13. Haven't been out but checked cams last night. Had 6 different bucks make/hit a scrape under the apple tree my camera's on on 2 nights ago. Things are ready to bust loose!
  14. 7 minute fight, those guys were pretty serious. Great points Gill. Sometimes I'll keep a rope in my stand tied to a branch/log on the ground to rustle leaves. dvdegeorge...how do you like the browning cams? I got 2 strike force's last season and they seem to out perform the others I have (bushnell/scoutguard). Flash/detection range is awesome. Have one on an apple tree in my yard that picks up activity in my driveway 70-80ft away.
  15. I've had better luck in areas with a close buck/doe ratio.
  16. http://vid772.photobucket.com/albums/yy7/jeffsmith111/but_zpsntswxbg4.mp4 http://vid772.photobucket.com/albums/yy7/jeffsmith111/IM000006_zps6nx5ku83.mp4 http://vid772.photobucket.com/albums/yy7/jeffsmith111/9-4623a_zpsicou2geq_1.mp4 I was cleaning up my computer and came across these trail cam videos from the 2009 season. I hunted these bucks all season long. The second one was under my stand in this video while I was at work. After the season I found he was hit by a truck less than a hour after the video was taken, actually got my hands on the rack and we scored him at 137.5". The other 2 were shot by a poacher prior to the season...again, I found out after the season ended. The biggest of the 3 had 19 scoring points and a 25 inch spread. The videos brought back memories of sitting long hours waiting for these guys to walk by while letting others pass....only to find after the season they were already dead. I still try to harvest mature deer, but I kind of got away from targeting specific animals....sometimes we really are chasing ghosts!
  17. I was using the original style head long before rage bought the technology from rocky mountain (sniper) guessing 15 years or so. Taken 20 or so whitetails, several ground hogs, grouse, squirrels and a few rabbits. Never lost an animal because of malfunction. In my opinion the advertising is the main problem with the head....not the design or performance. I don't feel 40+ yard shots are high percentage, ethical shots, nor are shoulder or steep angles shots. BUT you see it all the time on TV. Can these shots be made, sure, but there are way too many variables to make them high percentage, lethal shots, and the average archery hunter has a hard time making those shots on paper, let alone a live animal. Keep your heads sharp...practice as much as you can, aim for the rib cage at 25 yards or less and you will get good results, regardless of the design of your Brodhead. In my small circle of archery friends, the guys that always ask for help tracking don't follow these simple rules. The ones that need help butchering do..

  19. I've found the best practice is to be honest when contacting captains. Tell your friend to let them know he wants to book the trip of a lifetime but wont be tipping because he feels their price is absurd. When he finds the right charter to book they should both be very happy.
  20. Also keep in mind, when you do find active kings it's not uncommon to have multiple fish on at once. How many angry kings can you handle at the same time? 2 are a handful, 3 gets hectic, any more than that is pretty much chaos, at least with only 2 guys on board. If you really want to run the 5th rod, I'd suggest picking up a torpedo weight to match the depth you want to achieve. They work pretty much like a drop weight and you won't have the added cost of a copper/leadcore set up. You can run it on any rod and vary you lead length, short for aggressive fish or longer for negative fish. Also easier to clear out of the way than a long line (copper/lead).
  21. Not sure of that model, but a lot of my friends from ohio love the Excalibur's. I'm sure you'll be happy with it. I'd look for a local shop and handle several models if possible. I personally like to handle things before spending that kind of money. You might find something that just feels better in your hands. Lots of crossbows out there, many are good quality these days. I like the 10 points with the hand crank, but I'm old and tired. I got a turbo II for my fiancé two years ago and she loves it. Easy for her to crank and it'll hit a quarter at 50 yards. Whatever you choose, be very careful not to let your thumb or finger get in the strings way when you shoot. It can be very painful.
  22. There's a chart in a post below for small divers but it's the chart for #1 diver. Can't figure out how to copy it to this post, but scroll down and you'll find it.
