  1. I donated a half day walleye trip for a fund raising auction to support a cancer patient. It was a slow morning but we scratched out 5 bass and a walleye and it was a beautiful cool morning on the river. we had a fish cut off at leader, another straighten a snap swivel and I lost another one after a couple throbs.. Not sure what that was about but it might have been a good morning if not for some errors. The river seems to be in a bit of transition after the full moon. Hoping things pick up soon.
  2. Roughrider, You're right about the versatility of a smaller trailable boat. I've fished from the Niagra river to Lisbon on the St Lawrence, many Lake Ontario ports, Bay of Quinte, and several Indian river lakes. I've also hit lakers in Seneca and Cayuga and bass and pike on Conesus. I also use it to hunt ducks all over. Want to try the Hudson for stripers some spring. I feel very blessed to be retired and healthy enough to enjoy many days in the outdoors. I'm always up for a new adventure and have a wonderful supportive wife.
  3. Ran north and set up around 7:30 in 125 fow. Some bait and fish down 60-80. Could get them to fire but did get a skippy on a cheater spoon. Set up cowbells and slowed troll and caught a small laker. Figured if I wasn't catching fish I might as well not catch kings so speed up and set up more FF. About noon dipsy rod screams and ended up being an 18.4 king on FF 3 setting out 240. That was it for the day and we left at 2:00. The lake was flat but there was a very strong current . Sun was hot with no cover and o wind.
  4. Justin, I'm going to give it a try tomorrow but unfortunately Wed and Thurs.are bad for me. Give me a call and we can set something up.
  5. Justin, You're welcome to meet me at Mexico or Henderson sometime and give the salmon a try.Lake trout action is good now but salmon is still somewhat spotty. Let me know if you want to join me. I like to fish 3 people on the Lake so you could either bring a buddy or I'll bring someone. I may run down tomorrow or later in the week. A couple more weeks and the salmon action should be more consistent.
  6. Sounds like one and all had a great time on Otisco. Perhaps we could try one on the St. Lawrence sometime. Plenty of state campgrounds that are available and plenty of fish with decent numbers and size if they choose to cooperate. Unfortunately that's one variable that can't be controlled.
  7. Hit the river about 4:30 and fished till 8:00. Only had 3 hits and caught a smallmouth, a short walleye and one about 5 lbs. Seems like the full moon bite i experienced last week has slowed or perhaps I need to be out there from 2;00-6:00. I'm thinking of running to Mexico tomorrow and try the trout and salmon..
  8. Black makes 2 style of releases. Mine clip between swivel at the end of the cable and ball. I've never had an issue unless they have twisted before being lowered into the water. I always snap the rod to release the line before bringing the ball up.
  9. Not sure how dock fishing would be as I'm always in my Lund. I have caught walleyes from shore off the wall at Keewadan State Park.
  10. trapper I'm headed to Canada to fish salmon on Sat. and won't be fishing Sunday. The night bite has been solid for me and I seldom ever see another boat. However, it does wear you out.
  11. I took a friend from church and stationed at Fort Drum out very early this morning on the river (3:00 am) We caught 4 and lost 2 more and were off the river by 6:00 He then picked up his daughter and we fished Butterfield Lake for bass but only caught 3 so hit another lake for panfish and caught a nice bunch, I think it's now nap time!
  12. I actually run 10-12 lb. Big Game mono on line counters when using boards with long leads running crank and stick baits when fishing big open water like Quinte in the fall or Lake Ontario in the spring. I use a swivel and about 3-4' of flouro leader or no leader. I also use a snap for the ease of quickly changing lures I use the same rigs running spoons and sticks for shallow spring browns on the lake but use snap swivels on spoons. On the river I use spinning reels on long rods when longlining cranks. I run 20lb. fireline or power pro and 20 lb. flouro leader due to zebra mussels. I often use split shot ahead of the swivel not only to get deeper but to keep weeds and water fleas off the lure. Longlining works for me in depth inside 35 ' The river is very different with constantly changing current, and structure that often limit you to short trolls using shorter line lengths. That's one reason I often use very heavy bottom bouncers, heavy braid, 25 Lb. flouro leader and stout gear in deeper water where I sometimes troll in 40 fow or deeper with current. (Not a fun or easy way to fish but it can be effective)
  13. I couldn't agree with sk8man more. Some days it just isn't going to happen. Fortunately with experience those days become less frequent and we know Justin has experience.
  14. Didn't plan on fishing this morning but when I woke at 4:30 and it wasn't raining I hit the river. Caught one short and two nice eyes and had another big one drop off just before I could net it. Fish were all on the bottom in 30-35 fow.
  15. Great JT and eating wise they rival walleyes.
  16. Wind always makes things tough. River bite is finally cranking.
  17. You have to be passionate about fishing to get up at 1:30 am to hit the river. It was a gorgeous moonlit night and the walleyes were very cooperative, Three were around 27".
  18. I have done better on Bombers and Thundersticks than Rapalas. More of a rolling action in the current and I use about a 10-12 oz bottom bouncer. Boat traffic in the evening is why i prefer fishing early morning or late at night when no one is out.
  19. Fished off the north shore with Canadian friend Kelly Page and caught 3 kings, a laker, and a steelhead. Ran about 15 miles off shore and all kings came on FF. 140-200 fow 65-90 down. Thanks Kelly, Ian,and Ron for another great day!
  20. I had a similar experience up on The St Lawrence minus the browns. Caught 2 smallies but many were rolling on the surface.
  21. Bigger kid bigger fish today!
  22. I saw some nice gills off a dock a few days ago and took my neighbor kids (age 4 and 2) over tonight .They had a ball and caught 28 and a bonus bass. They watched me fillet them up and took home a couple meals of nice fillets. David ask his mom if we could do it again tomorrow before bed. I think I'm building some future fisher persons.
