  2. The only side effect of Frogger's test is that now his eyes display the temp and speed every time he opens them out on the water
  3. Admiral Byrd (Bob) and I took awhile to check the weather this AM before deciding to give Seneca a try in his newly "reconditioned" Penn Yan boat. We launched from the Chamber a little before 8 or so and fished until 1 PM. A bunch of fish were marked at the 75 ft or so range yesterday by Bob and we had 48 degrees down about 90 ft today with low 70's on the surface so we trolled south with a combination of things(one 5 leader rig, a dipsey with spoon a downrigger and spoon a flasher/fly combo, a leadcore and the weed patches started almost immediately. Shortly after we started the rig rod started thumping and taking out line and it turned out to be a 6-7 lb chubby laker on the 4th spoon down (nail polish special Sutton 44) tossed back and kept trolling south then turned back north just north of Reeders and when the bottom came up a little quicker than expected we nailed a small laker on the dipsey /spoon rod set at about 250. We trolled north against the now 10-15 mph west wind and nothing happening ( thank God for his autopilot though) but when we pulled in the lines in front of Roy's we had another laker on the rig down on the last leader (another nail polished Sutton 22). We were trying to avoid "lakerville" by running up high but no rainbows or landlocks and browns were in the cards for us today. It was mostly a test of Bob's "improvements" to the boat and it all worked great. The grass pockets were pretty annoying especially one huge one that temporarily disabled the trolling motor it was so thick and wrapped up the prop and the fleas were pretty bad too encrusting just about everything we had out and it was clearly a two man operation bringing in the lines. The pics were the highlights of our trip
  4. Congrats Matt and company....you guys were up against some real tough competitors and pulled it off
  5. The problem in Canandaigua was bacterial and viral infections. On Honeoye the blue/green algae may have had some impact on the fish. The large mouths are very over populated there and mave probably "out competed" the smallies because of the excessive grass growth there. Also, the sunnys and gills are very strong there and probably eat a lot of the eggs in the Spring
  6. We had fun anyway Mike....even a less than anticipated day fishing in retirement is better than a good day at work
  7. As above at the backing tie so that you get the most benefit out of the weight.
  8. Surface temps seem to be more useful in the Spring and late Fall when there isn't a pronounced thermocline present. Once the thermocline is established the surface temps (other than looking at temperature inversions or "turnovers" in the lake) are less relevant during the summer. The "down" temps and location of the thermocline in the water column (changes with wind and currents) are the more important factors then. At least that is the way I look at it.
  9. The copper has some weight to it so one thing you may want to consider is getting a rod with a little backbone to it.
  10. There are times when the fleas are so thick that they even gather on the 200 lb downrigger wires and anything vertical already happened this year on Keuka.
  11. Nick yesterday they were even all over the 30 lb flea flicker Mike was using and my 30 lb wire (all along it at intervals). It may pay to check lines frequently to minimize buildup at least.
  12. We only saw about a half a dozen boats out there yesterday Nick and we didn't have hardly any marks and the bait was up high about 50-60 over 170 or so. I don't think we marked over 5 fish while out there. You seeing any better screens?
  13. I run mine on 50 lb Power Pro Spectrum and tighten the release down so it doesn't release and then clear the board on the way in. You do have to be careful though not to slow down too much on the retrieve when the board is near the boat because they have a tendency to dive at that point and are then hard to retrieve but I don't usually run the 44's all that far away from the boat either. If I run chute rigs back I usually run them as balloon rigs to get them away from my other stuff.
  14. Nice laker! Every once in awhile Skinny gives up one of those hogs....I think I remember years ago a 30 lb laker came out of there....they must be really old because the feed there sure isn't rich (e.g. no sawbellies etc.) or plentiful for them.
  15. Signalman and I gave it a shot this morning on his 23.5 ft Penn Yan (great boat to fish out of) and trolled from Afro to chimney then back to the channel only seeing a little bait up towards the top (about 50-60 ft) and very few fish anywhere. The temp was 42 degrees down about 105 ft and we had one apparent king on briefly off a magnum spoon on the downrigger set at 105 over 180 ft. He was on and screaming out the drag for a few times then off. We had 2-3 footers the whole time with what appeared to be a 10-12 mph west wind (projected by the weather folks to be 6 mph) We had 4 downriggers out and two wire dipseys with flies (ran them 150 - 420 while out there) and nothing else was touched but that one hit on the rigger. The fleas were pretty bad on the wires and even the flea flicker on the two downriggers that weren't checked as frequently as usual (because of the rather rough water). We saw a few folks out deep but they worked their way back in after awhile and didn't appear to be doing much. We stayed mostly in the 130-200 ft range. I'm now wondering if the bite is late afternoon or real early AM. We quit about 1 PM. Despite the conditions and results we had a real good time chatting....always just a matter of being out there enjoying things anyway....
  16. X 2 on the "hang in there" Jason it usually gets worse before it gets better so hopefully you'll be headed for better In the meantime enjoy whatever part of the vacation you can.....you'll get there bud.
  17. Yeah I think Hop used to fish with Fred Flintstone at one time
  18. BPSwing I think Fishy Business on Keuka Lake had some Flea Flicker line the last time I was there but I'm not sure what lb test it was.....He is located at 3737 Pepper Road Bluff Point NY (607) 368-2306 or (315) 719-3673 (closed Tuesdays). Could give him a call.
  19. Yes the old motors were made to last not all the plastic and cheapo parts like in today's and simpler was better. I used to service my old 1979 35 Johnson myself but when I take the cover off this Optimax it looks like I'm on another planet. I had the1972 Whaler for 22 years and sold it for $300 more than I had paid for it
  20. Nice going Joe and Nick! Best wishes on the wedding Nick....we'll be thinking of you while we're out fishing this weekend Joe will probably have his boat right outside the reception waiting to take off
