  1. Nice going on the fish Ed. Rather puzzling difference in the size of different temps on E vs. W sides. must be the wind and current combined to set it up that way. Pretty steep difference. Was hoping to fish Lake O but the wind direction has sucked so may opt for Seneca tomorrow. Are the weeds mostly as you head south? Thinking maybe about a Sampson launch but not decided yet.....
  2. Gambler has the right attitude....and my sentiments exactly too. We have gotten pretty spoiled ans we need a reminder to "smell the roses" once in awhile.
  3. Superhark18 - Just as a "heads up" the fleas and weeds have been pretty bad this season even coating the downrigger cables all the way up. Jigging may end up being the only practical option unless things have changed radically since my last trip Once the thermocline has formed as it has the action is usually "suspended" rather than bottom oriented and jigging becomes a slight bit trickier and more dependent on your fish finders ability to discriminate your jig depth and position of fish and sometimes they want slighlty lighter jigs with more action. In the past I've found that darker jigs seem to be preferred by the bigger lakers in the warmer months for some reason while at other times white has been the most successful. Sometimes you have to drift slowly back and forth over the suspended fish a few times before they will hit.
  4. Not trying to be a smart azz but if these mature kings are out there someplace in numbers WHERE are they.in the lake? The guys on the north shore don't seem to be banging them and not on the south shore either or in the east or west basin (in the numbers in the past anyway the bar etc. I think it unlikely that they are all piled up out in the middle....regardless of temps etc. I will be very surprised if the streams see big runs of matures this year.....but as has been noted the immature fish seem strong so far anyway offering hope for the near future. P.S. I honestly hope I'm wrong on this one.
  5. Just another take on this but I'm wondering if something major happened to a couple of the previous year classes whether weather wise or other stuff such that they are showing up in very poor numbers now. There have been reports all over the place that few if any fish are being marked as in years past. I know this won't be a popular comment but I also wonder about the cumulative effects of fishing pressure all around the lake now that many more folks on both sides of the pond have "dialed in" and are much more effective than in years past because of better understanding of the areas fished, improvements in equipment and technology, and increased effectiveness of the harvesting methods. Although Ontario is a big lake and there are a lot of fish in it....kings are very heavily targeted by many people and this is not an infinite resource folks despite what we all might wish to believe. This is also not meant to be "accusatory" in any way of us sports fishermen, charters etc. just something to think about as a possibility when trying to figure out what is going on out there.....the picture is very different that it was a couple years ago.
  6. Welcome! and best of luck to you guys out there. The folks on this website are second to none as far as generosity of information and fishing knowledge. You'll be a "happy camper" Have a great season. Les
  7. I guess my talk on it after a few times out this season is that the kings of the past just aren't out there period now. I think DEC better get going on increasing the stocking or the next few years will be dismal because whatever happened to the year classes that didn't show in numbers may happen to these juveniles as well..
  8. Ed and another for getting up the courage for reading the instructions
  9. Ah OK I wasn't sure and was going to say one or the other and the "golden" tipped me toward carp they might be homely but they are fighters and are fun
  10. Great report Jay. Glad you had some action.....was it good ole Mr./Ms. Carp at the end?
  11. Great photo Sean I too was unaware that they could have that many cubs at a time....usually a couple. Very cool and Carey did a great job with the photo. Best regards bud.
  12. If you use Gamblers general strategy together with the other info (cowbells and peanut or Spin-n-glow) or the flasher fly approach near bottom it is as close to a guarantee as you will get in fishing.
  13. Using Fish ID is usually less accurate on most finders and often identifies irrelevant objects debris or anything with a detectable signal as fish. On the Lowrance it should be displaying fish as "arches" or if fish are moving "lines". If the fish are at the outer edges of the cone angle they may appear as partial "arches" or lines. When jigging and boat is relatively stationary arches may change to diagonal lines going after your jig. In the pic below there was a significant chop on the water at the extreme top of it shown as turbulence, the massive blob is bait, the "arches at bottom and in top portion are fish. The dark lines going through are downriggers.
  14. Zack and Keith are certainly "go to" guys for those bodies of water Kevin so have your buddy contact them...it will accelerate the learning curve for him. They are indeed tough lakes to consistently fish.
  15. Nice report and results Nautitroller! Good luck with the trip and the rebuild Nick!
  16. If it is light weight it is probably not the one I suggested....probably a stinger as they are usually lighter.
  17. #6 (80 lb test) SPRO swivel with #5 duo lock snap at the terminus and a #8 (50lbtest) for inline connection.
  18. I've used Sea Flee for the past two seasons and it works pretty well but has a lot of stretch to it but again if you run through using ANYTHING with real dense fleas they will get on it to some degree. It is tough to evaluate because the density varies tremendously throughout the lake and the water column. There is no "foolproof" line that will be completely flealess at those densities. The fact that some folks report little or no fleas reflects this fact rather than any one line being "flea proof".
  19. NK's usually have the NK marking at the front (top narrow part) of the spoon....I don't see it in the pic....maybe the angle but it looks more like one of the generic blank spoons that Cabela's used to sell in the magnum size possibly and doctored up with a glow ladder and spray painted.
  20. Looks like Sheila was giving you lessons Dave if she got the fish (or were you being a "gentleman" ?) Nice work! As far as the kings go I'm really starting to believe that Vince Pierleoni's views about the need for more stocking of kings is the correct one. They seem few and far between this year and even fewer than last year and compared with 2012 not even close. I hope DEC is keeping an open mind and looking closely at what is happening out there this year.
  21. I'd like to get involved next year...tow vehicle problems kept me from it this year. a big to all participants...great event and great folks involved in it.
  22. Rod Hogs info is right on the money
  23. I have no idea regarding the actual physical impact of the fleas on fish in the ecosystem....maybe someone else may have data on that (if it exists)?
  24. As above they can coat anything really if the density of them is great enough....leadcore isn't immune to this either nor are even the anti-flea lines (e.g. Flea Flicker and SeaFlee). They help but especially at any connection points (e.g. running fluoro leaders,at swivels and snaps etc.) they will gather fleas if the density is very heavy. The flea density is not a CONSTANT...they vary from place to place in the lake and from depth to depth in the water column and seemingly from day to day sometimes. This is why it is about impossible to evaluate whether one line or method is better than another because the density is always unknown and variable. Here are the main culprits: http://www.nyis.info/index.php?action=invasive_detail&id=35 http://www.caudata.org/daphnia/
