  1. Black releases all the way....I have a couple that have lasted over 30 years so far and many fish on them and are still perfect. For the money they are one of the biggest bargains in the fishing world.
  2. Welcome aboard and best of luck fishing!
  3. You know Jason... this should be a real eye opener to everyone including me in terms of complaining about pricing etc. on lures and even though I've made my own crude home made spoons in the past (without quality control ) the information you've presented here sheds a much different light on things for me and really highlights all the work (and steps) that go into making good lures from"scratch" and it is not the "easy money" deal that some folks may have thought.....very informative. Thanks. I've witnessed the effectiveness of your lures first hand and my hat is off to you for hanging in there with all the frustrations involved in getting your business up and running and the supply factors beyond your control etc. Les
  4. Thanks MIke .....maybe we'll have to try it again next time we're out there together....great flavor assortment and ice cream.
  5. Good info here and Tim's comments (as usual) are right on target. One of our steelies (frequent inhalers of sliders) was caught on a slider with an orange spoon today. P.S. Although "cheaters" and "sliders" are often used to mean the same thing....they used to be referred to separately. Cheaters were leaders used on Seth Green rigs or downriggers in a fixed position (say clipped into a bead chain) and located about 3 to 6 ft above a set of cowbells (previously called flashers) and they could be 12-30 ft long and they were used as something following the attractors and often with a spoon or twin minnow like lure. Sliders are usually fixed or free floating but are usually about a little shorter than the length of the rod being used (say 7-8 ft long).
  6. Historically the Fall (late Sept through early Dec.) have been some of my best months fishing in the Fingers. For one thing all the recreational yahoos are gone , few jet skiis and many folks are hunting so the lakes can be "yours" to play on without the "crowds". Don't miss out on Seneca then either.
  7. After today I'm not sure if there is a pattern but the last couple times it has been a heavier spoon bite for us although we have had a little dipsey flasher/fly action. Two hits today on the copper trolling pretty fast but they didn't stick. At this point it doesn't seem clear that just one thing is working...have to try all of it and experiment.....things can also be quite different in different parts of the lake etc. Combos of white and green are often good to try for flasher (or spinny)/fly and orange spoons work well on the steelies and kings.
  8. (Mark) The lake was just right today Jason....slight chop and slight breeze and although sunny in the AM it turned to haze so we couldn't complain about the weather just the flies
  9. Signalman and I left the launch about 6AM and fished until 1 PM. We started out in 200 ft straight out from the channel and headed due north. We dropped 3 downriggers 2 wires with diapeys/flies and a 350 copper. Spoons on everything but the dipsys. Temp was 43-45 degrees about 100- 115 down. After about an hour and a half we had downrigger release at 115 over 383 ft and out went the drag and we knew who was there stripped out some line and then the usual stuff and Mike landed a 12-15 lb king. Trolled north and a bit west Marking very few fish and no bait pods....couple hours later in about 540 ft the 100 ft.downrigger fires and quickly the steelie on the other end with an orange spoon on slider in his mouth surfaces and does several jumps showing off and it turns out to be a decent steelie. About a couple more hours went by with 2 hits on the copper but they were off before we could even move toward the rod. Then the flasher/fly (white flasher with silver fly) dipsy wire rig starts screaming line and I thought it was a king for sure....more line stripped several times and when finally got it to the net another steelie. LIne was out 300 ft over 587ft. We trolled around and then back toward "base" didn't mark much except in a small area where we got the steelies. We never marked much bait at all and very few fish and the ones marked were at about 540 ft suspended about 90-100 ft. The fleas were pretty bad on the wire and braid and the annoying biting little pkrhead flies were out in force in the sun out there. As usual it was fun BS'ing about various things with Mike as we have known each other since mid teens....fun day on the pond. Thanks Mike. Oh...and did I mention we went for ice cream afterward...eat your heart out Admiral Byrd (working)
  10. WTG Nick and good to see the engine problems appear gone....you've sure paid your dues on that. I'm having a hard time remembering better fishing results at this time of the year on Seneca as many years it has not been this great into August.
  11. Doesn't get any better than that Joe regardless of what is caught....
  12. Nice going Mr. Brown Trout....you sure have them dialed in Ed I 'm thinking yore using scent on your new boat itself or something
  13. Hey buckboard...those original drag washers were pretty crappy weren't they? Mine were totally smooth so no wonder they slipped and you can break them between your finger and thumb....pretty bad....
  14. Al I usually release most fish but when I keep one for the grill I slit the throat with a knife and hold him over the side of the boat or leave the fish in my net in the water to drain and then ice him.
  15. Nice going Justin and great report. Nothing like turning on kids to types of fishing experiences they probably wouldn't have had otherwise A great way to give back to the sport....
  16. The Owners Stinger hooks do and they could be just as good on freshwater fish but it doesn't say how many come in a package in the ad Here is another alternative - http://www.amazon.com/Gamakatsu-Pack-Open-Siwash-Hook/dp/B003P9EIHO/ref=pd_sim_sg_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=105N4QMGF1XCWCSWN2F3
  17. Great report FLX. Good to know things seem to be starting up out there. Nice looking healthy looking bows perseverance paid off
  18. ADK -Glad I bought mine years ago when they were much cheaper but there they are: http://www.amazon.com/Mustad-Classic-Hollow-Salmon-Siwash/dp/B00DT0SSKW/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=14Y0XC9QFHHNXTDJBJZB A good alternative may be: http://www.amazon.com/Owner-Stinger-Siwash-Hooks/dp/B00ECIM0Z4/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_8?ie=UTF8&refRID=08CFDX64J3AT3Y0H4977 Another possible alternative if you can't find Mustad Siwash Salmon Hooks may be these VMC's but I don't think they are hardened stainless (3x or 5x's) http://www.cabelas.com/product/VMCreg-Siwash-Hooks/739723.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3FN%3D0%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dsiwash%2Bhook%26WT.srch%3D1%26WT.tsrc%3DPPC%26rid%3D20%26WT.mc_id%3DMICROSOFT|fis_Terminal%2BTackle_Hooks|USA%26WT.z_mc_id1%3D43700001510178769%26gclid%3DCNDDhdaWnsACFcol4AodQHoAjQ%26gclsrc%3Dds&Ntt=siwash+hook&WTz_l=PPC
  19. Yes I hear ya on the browns. They are few and far between for me at the north end too. A lot of them apparently go down the Seneca River and I'm wondering how many of them live down there instead of in the lake at this point.... I can't believe how long the shelf out where you were fishing has held fish this year they usually are further south at this point in the season but now I'm pretty sure they will stay north for the Fall bite especially those big lakers.
  20. Very nice Alex....looks like the old days there, Always some big lakers in that lake and great when you can get them to hit
  21. Like jigstick said....both ways depending on conditions at the time...have to be careful when rough water if running two at same time or combined with spinny on downriggers at same time (tangles come easy) I nearly always run them close to the ball (e.g.4 ft or so) if run on downriggers
  22. In the running for possible disappearing fish 1. smallie 2. raInbow 3. landlock
  23. WTG Ed! I think from the glasses tied around your neck you may have experienced what has happened more than once to me...glasses in the shirt pocket lean over the side to rig something....bye bye glasses hello squinting to tie my leaders after I'll bet Mama is loving that new ride
