    Late spawn

One of the reasons I don't fish for walleye through the ice, they already put a hurting on them during the winter. Especially during the derbys in the winter. All the more reason to make a slight change to the winter. I know a lot of guys that will fish them hard in the winter and keep a lot of big fish. Good for them but at some point it is really going to put a hurting on them. Not to mention the poachers that take fish out of season or in the streams while breeding.
  2. Nice guys! Great video, have you thought about vertical trees for your planer poles? I saw you had to put rods under others in order to fight the fish at the back of the boat. Vertical holders would help a lot with that.
  3. I will add CHIRP on my unit is only good to 600 fow so I would guess it does not have the high band. The raymarine high band is good to 10,000 fow supposedly. For me that wasn't necessary so I went with the 600'. I have fished out to 200 fow and couldn't believe the detail the CHIRP shows vs traditional sonar. It almost makes me mad seeing all the fish under the boat and not catching any.
  4. Yes that is correct but it is much higher than the traditional sonar units. Mine is a fixed range where the OP was referencing changing the ranges. I know some units allow you to change the operating ranges to give better clarity at different depths but a lot of the FF units that have CHIRP built in are generally low and medium range and automatically adjust the freq range based on depth. I can say Raymarine units need a separate module to or the high end FF allow changing the range. Anything around $1000 is going to be hit or miss dependent on brand. My Raymarine mid band is 75-130 and high is up to 250 (sorry for the typo above). My current setup didn't interfere with my older Humminbird that ran a 200/83 ducer, side by side they both had a clear screen. I will say that after getting the CHIRP there was no need for the other unit.
  5. Most definitely the 12lbs. eye my FIL and I caught in 2008 had a 12" white fish down in its belly. Probably would have been 13lbs. if we didn't pull it out. FWIW I could fit my fist down its mouth.
  6. That or perch, 2nd weekend in march I caught an 8lbs. and 6lbs. eye on Sat. Both spit 8" perch in the livewell.
  7. Baystar is the compression fittings Sea-Star uses pre installed crimp on fittings You might need to use adapters or look on the following sites for the exact part you need. I have purchased through both, be sure you are ordering what you need because their return policy sucks. https://www.pexuniverse.com/brass-fittings https://www.supplyhouse.com/Brass-Fittings-164000

    Late spawn

I don't think it really needs to be that much later but 2 weeks would guaranteed they would be done. I also think that they should limit the ice fishing as well. Something like 2 per day or add a slot size.
  9. Which hydraulic unit, most hardware stores should carry any fittings needed.
  10. My FIL has been out in the bay and has about given up hope. He said there has been tons of bait with large marks all over the bait. My guess is they are already out of the bay or engorged and no need to feed. Either way it is going to make fishing hard this weekend. I'm guessing there will be a ton of boat traffic too. Oh well hope to see you all out there. Tight lines and Bent poles!
  11. The freq. for CHIRP is around 350kHz so if he runs Chirp it shouldn't interfere with any traditional sonar freq.
  12. Nice unit but I would make sure you can actually choose the CHIRP frequencies. I have the A68 by raymarine love it but can not change the CHIRP freq. unless I buy a standalone CHIRP Module. The module alone is the price of your unit so I doubt the unit you are looking at will allow you to change the freq. I don't know for certain so take it with a grain of salt. I would look through the entire owners manual even call Garmin to verify. My unit has CHIRP downvision built into it but I am not able to tweak it other than the return strength and similar settings. If I were to buy the module I could adjust the frequencies and all sorts of other things.

    Late spawn

Opening weekend I had some spewing Milt all over the boat. I think it was a late spawn for sure. I caught a few females but no eggs.
  14. Welcome. Add tackle slow, search the "Tackle and Techniques" section for "fixed cheaters" and "sliding cheaters". You can run your riggers with 2 poles per each rigger or run cheaters. I prefer cheaters so I can run more rods other places.
  15. A PM goes a long way too, Rich is a good guy (not the only one on here) and might help you out.
  16. Well it is really dependant on the temps, If we get a good south wind the colder water will push in closer to shore. That will bring the fish in shallower. You could target browns out in front of Maxwell, look to see how Yankee Troller is doing on the browns. Usually his reports are spot on and give a good amount of info. I would also look into the archives at this time of year 1 year ago and see what they were catching them on. I know i had good luck 2 years ago on Bloody death dreamweavers and Silver stingers with green ice ladder (can't remember the name). Really you will need to try different colors until you get a hit then replicate as much as you can until it stops working then change it up again.
  17. I would check the reports section, from what I have heard they are already getting Kings in Oswego so I would imagine you might get into some out of Sodus. I always caught fish out of Sodus not sure what the hot lure is right now but it's hard to go wrong with spoons on riggers. I would also run a sliding cheater and maybe hook up with some Steelhead up high (if you're targeting Salmon).
  18. Cayuga from Newark is a haul Seneca Lake would be closer as would Canandaigua Lake. If you're wanting to out onto Ontario I would launch out of Sodus and it's about 25 minutes from Newark even less if you're North of Newark. I used to live in Newark and fished out of Sodus a lot.
  19. I think I saw you guys, Aluminum boat around 17'? I think we were zig zagging around each other. Were you over by the point at the end of the island?
  20. I was out in the bay 2 weeks ago and the amount of bait that showed up after it warmed up was insane. Opening weekend and the following were good weekends for me. The opening weekend was the most productive for me. The bait has moved in turning off the fishing once the bait starts to disperse it will be better fishing. I'll be up for memorial day weekend and hope to get after them a little, I'll give a report if there is anything to report on.
  21. Looking forward to seeing all the good times! Good luck!
  22. Don't they make a unit that converts the entire steering to hydraulic and eliminates the need for the power assist? I'm pretty sure it is close to the same price and then also removes the need of the power steering pump on the motor. Jigstick, are you still keeping the power assist or completely going hydraulic? Here is a link: http://www.seastarsolutions.com/products/hydraulic-new/sterndrive-steering-new/
  23. Really anything you can afford is better than nothing. What exactly are you looking for? GPS/FF combo? dedicated FF? Primary species you will be fishing for?
  24. This is the route I would go. I'm sure you wanted to hear something different as this is already an expensive sport. I have been around boats, tractors, lots of motors and nothing about rebuilding a motor is cheap especially if you aren't doing the work yourself. I'm not saying you shouldn't rebuild the motor but the most cost effective option is for you to buy new or used and not repair that motor. Name brand motors might only last as long (highly unlikely) but the parts availability for the name brand motors are plentiful driving down the cost of parts.
