  1. I wish the GLT rods came in something shorter than 8-6 for the copper/leadcore. Would like something shorter since it makes storage in the cuddy easier. Might just have to go with the standard Classics that come in 7 footers.
  2. Does anyone use the Okuma classic pro or GLT that are designed for leadcore?
  3. I've been fishing lake michigan for 3 years now and slowly added gear over time. As a result, I have a hodgepodge of various rods for leadcore. A combination of whuppin' sticks, ugly sticks, and cabelas rods. All of them of course are various lengths and stiffness. This becomes and issue when you are running 3 boards a side on a triple tree since they end up overlapping. So over the winter I would like to get 8 - 10 replacement rods so that they are all the same. I run everything from 2 colors up to 10 colors with Church walleye boards. Does anyone have any recommendations that wont break the bank?
  4. Same spoon as last year did a majority of the damage on Lake Michigan. Even gave a few out to others on the docks and they all said the same thing. The one I ran all the time has teeth marks all up and down the thing....all the way to swivel. Moonshine UV/RV blue flounder pounder.
  5. Only used one year. I took it off the boat to put a Raymarine combo unit on the boat that was compatible with my new autopilot. Its the only reason I'm getting rid of this unit. Priced for a quick sale. Had to pay the ex girlfriend to move out of my own house and I'm short on cash, otherwise I would have saved this for next spring and sold it for more money. Dont you love how that stuff works Purchase with confidence - I have an 8000+ positive comment rating on eBay and over 25 transactions here on this forum. Sells for $500+ new. Condition of the unit is great since packed it away after each trip. No wear at all on it and includes the original box and all parts. The only thing you will need is a new clamshell for the through-hull if you run it that way. Price is $275 shipped to your door.
  6. So what was the best speed on a X4-D this year? I had a real on/off year and couldn't get consistent results to see what the best speed with the new unit was.
  7. I put these on my boat http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005WWIV3O/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 $11 each truck LED lights. They have worked great so far and beat the spreader lights that my buddy spend 150 on. My triple trees sit up further so I mounted them right to the trees. Just got some shorter bolts, drilled a hole in the triple tree, and mounted them right there. Replace the standard nut/lock washer with a locking nut. You can set it to just the right tension where you can still tilt the lights in any direction you want.
  8. Whats the proper procedure for checking the voltage on a fiberglass boat?
  9. The lead cores that are micro lead do dive deeper than standard leadcore.
  10. I only use Suffix 832 advanced leadcore on anything over a 3 color. It only comes in 18lb, but the dracron is much stronger than that. It sinks deeper and takes up less space on the reel. Ive dragged bottom already in 60 feet of water with a 10 color.
  11. Ditto the warranty. The worst case scenario is overheating to do blow head gasket/low compression on a cylinder. Can you provide more details on this "new" motor. Was it just a block or was it a full long block with all of the bolt ons that are all new?
  12. I have an 89 mercruiser 5.7 I idle mine at 600 and never have had a problem. Oil pressure is usually 30+ at idle on 15w-40. Does it only overheat at idle? Are you sure the fins are going the correct way and all going the same direction when the impeller was installed? Has this always been a problem since you've owned the boat or is it something more recent? Was the old impeller shredded at all? A common issue at idle is that the old bits of the old impeller are stuck in the system and blocking low pressure water. If it overheats at idle, but is better at a higher speed, it almost always points to a water flow/pressure problem. Another common problem is the check valves/balls in the hoses - thats if thats the system you have. Pull the the two upper rubber hoses off thermostats housing to check balls. If they are too loose or not seated correctly, they will let water through without it cooling the block. You can tighten the nut on the shaft and check to see if that tightens them up. If they dont tighten up, I think you can stretch the spring and put it back together.
  13. You have to have gps or a chart plotter hooked up to do the patterns. I do a .1 to .13 nm 180 turn. Smoothest turn I've ever seen. If I need to make a sharper turn I do it manually but I'm usually busy netting a fish in the turn
  14. True true - now I only have to be hacked of about how I only get 8 fish in a trip when other guys are going 17 for 22 (who's going to eat all of those fish anyways )
  15. Just an update I dont even touch the wheel to do turns anymore - I either use the turn 180 pattern or the 360 circle. You can set it to turn either direction and the diameter of the turn. Turns perfect with dragging 6 boards without a single tangle. Being able to make a smooth turn, catch a fish or 2 on the turn and then not touch the wheel at all - priceless. The only thing I havent figure out is if i can get the zig-zag working. I always get more fish on turns vs straight trollling. Im not sure if you can set the zig zag pattern in a way that doesnt make it turn too sharp.
  16. Just another plug for the Raymarine Evolution - it tracks better and better each time I take it out. The system seems to learn your boat style. I usually touch the wheel 2 times or so once I leave the boat slip - that with an average of 6 hours of trolling. I dont even touch the wheel to do turns - I either use the turn 180 pattern or the 360 circle. You can set it to turn either direction and the diameter of the turn. Turns perfect with dragging 6 boards without a single tangle.
  17. Ditto on the Evolution. It tends to freak out a bit in 4 footers...but so do all of the rookies on the boat
  18. Its an a77 - a series MFD. I really like it so far. I've still getting use to adjusting it but its pretty easy to set up. Best part is they now give you free charts with the Lighthouse II update. They are pretty detailed charts that are based off of the NOAA vector charts. So no paying $200 for a navionics chip with less detail than the vector charts. I wasnt sold on the chirp/down vision deal so I went with the a77 instead of the a78. I got a screaming good deal on it at $766 + $95 for the ducer. It was a model number (E70165) that I think they are trying to get rid of - its the one without WIFI and without Navionics maps - both of which I didnt need. I think they are going to having wifi on all units. Thats why when you look at pricing online for the A77 its usually $1000 w/o a ducer - its the wifi and charts that drives the price up. Also, the a77 makes it a snap to update the ACU, EV compass, and P70R units. I had to do them one at a time and it did take some time, but its the only way to update these units without sending them in.
  19. Here is my install - it's just tapped in place for now to make sure it's the best place.
  20. I let mine with the Hand Over Time and Rudder Limits as is. If you dont have the rudder sensor installed (not sure if its even possible with a mercruiser) only the Hand Over Time prevents the wheel from getting cranked to its end stop. Im not really even sure how it would even work because how does it even really know when the drive is straight anyways? I think I might have hit the limit once on my first time out when i was in the process of doing turn and turned the knob a little too far all at once and got a blast of wind at the same time. I suppose I could just lower the Hand Over Time setting. Does that also impact how often it corrects back and forth? My corrects like crazy when trolling but it does keep it on a perfect line and it was in 2 to 3 footers.
  21. Do you know if it is hydraulic steering or cable steering? Thats the key difference that will point you towards what autopilot you should choose. Do you troll on just one motor or are you using a kicker?
  22. On a side note - I could have stayed out there 10+ hours if I had the time to. You have no idea how much more relaxing it is to actually just fish rather than fiddle with the wheel the entire time. Wont have to take a 3 hour nap anymore after early fishing before a evening trip.
