  8. Fished Sat out of Oswego and got out before all the big guns came out for the tournament. We started in 150 fow west of the river. I set my second rigger down 65ft and within a minute of being down the rigger popped ,15 min later boated a 17 pound king. Bait was everywhere in close but not the marks. We trolled all the way out to 450fow with only picking up a laker 80 ft down. Not a lot of bait out there. Did mark some good bait from 150-280fow, but again no fish around them. Both fish came off a DW alewive spoon. We trolled back and we didn't pick up another fish. We fished from 6am-11am. went 2-4 with two knock offs. I'm hoping this big blow mid-week will bring some marks in for the weekend... Side note: Came in at 11am not many boats had brought fish back to the docks. However one charter captain did have 8 browns and a laker so the browns are in there to target until the kings show up. Good luck out there! Jimmy
  9. I got my copper set up from Tom Allen. Its a great reel and it all comes ready to go! He really helped explain the knots to use when your copper break. Amazing resource. http://www.atommiktrollingflies.com/ Give him a call and he will get you all set up.
  10. I can be available for the Oswego Pro/AM!
  11. Trying to understand the wind and it's affects on fishing better. Why will a SW wind be better suited for better fishing? Is it because it will push the warmer water out and allow for cold water to settle in providing a better 'climate' for the fish to come in? Out of Oswego we saw A LOT of bait fish out 100-200 fow but no hooks. I know the eastern basin is a different beast but didn't know if the same rule of thumb applied. Thanks for the insight.
  12. Out of Oswego today good amount of bait in 150-230fow not much going on here one skippy king down 40 on chicken wing. Ran out to 450 no bait no marks. Tried the last hour close for browns more marks but no takers.. Heading in.... Cold water in close as well. Good luck out there!
  13. Kevin, Thank you for providing me more information on this topic. I guess most of my information is based on heasay, I should be more informed about the topic before I offer my opinion on a public form. The lake trout population is extremely high on that lake with a lot of cookie cutter sized fish. My hopes is that the lake will be better managed so we can see the rainbow and brown populations continue to thrive. We have been fishing the bass tournament for 24 years. (We call it the bass tournament because it always falls on the weekend bass season opens). Our first 10 years were spent on Otisco lake but we saw a significant decline in trout population on that lake so we switch over to Owasco. My understanding is the walleye population on Otisco exploded which lead to the decline in the trout population. Again I do not have all my facts since I was just a young kid in those years. Kevin, do you have link to Dan Bishops research that I can better educate myself on the issue? @alex1young- it was a pleasure to meet you on Sunday. Congrats on your win and what a beautiful brown! Look forward to seeing you at the tournament next year! Some additional information that might help other anglers- our spoon leads were 30-40ft off the ball which seemed to work the best Also I lost three fish on dispeys running 10 pound test from the dispey to the spoon. I will never again run 10 pound test off a dispey again. Even ran a snubber with the 10 pound test and still has break offs. 20 pound didn't seem to make a difference on the amount of hook ups and didn't have the line break. -Jimmy Page
  14. Just got back from the Owasco Bass Tournament. We couldn't ask for better weather or a better time on the water. We were going in a little blind this year since most of our focus the last few years has been on the big pond. We all took a half day Friday to prefish in order to find out where the the thermocline was set up and see if we could mark some fish. We found the best bait over 130 fow anywhere from 20-120 down. The bait was few and far between but we did mark a good amount in the middle of the lake so we decide to start there Saturday morning. Saturday was a slow start for us we only hit 3 fish in the first 4 hours a little frustrating but being able to put out 9 rods really helped us dial in what they wanted. Our set up included 3 dispeys, 2 riggers, 2 stackers, a copper and a side planner with around an oz of weight. (The side planner was not hit the entire two todays, we are thinking of getting into the lead-core game) Around 11am we starting marking much more bait and it was game on. I can tell you green did not work. It is usually our go to but for us I only moved 3 rods the entire trip with green. Rigger, Stackers, and dispeys all produced. Most fish came from 40ft down to 60ft. Best down speed was 2.0-2.3. We found a good amount of bait at 11am and just worked that area for 3 hours mid-day! We landed 10 fish in those 3 hours and lost another 5-6. We were picking through laker trout after lake trout mainly in the 3-6 pound range which we knew would not hold up so all were released. Then around 12:30 the lower rigger fired and 10 seconds later I saw a beautiful rainbow jumping behind the boat. It was a great fight with her jumping 5-6 times and finally hitting the deck. We boxed her and fished for another 30 min but wanted to get her weighted asap. Took a little break and went back out to the same area. We hit another 10 fish from 4pm-6pm, nothing of size until the stacker released and same story. Another great bow giving us a aerobatic show. Sunday we ran to the same spot and same story plenty of bows, smaller lakers, but nothing of size. All released hit another 15 fish in the morning. Fishing was good but we had to pick up at 9am to get my brother on his flight home. Went back out at 11am and only hit a small laker. It was mainly a spoon bit for us with only 2-3 hits coming off the flasher/fly combo. All in all it was a great weekend lots of fish and we ended up taking 1st and 2nd in the bow division. Great competition out there and congrats to the winners in the other divisions. 11 pound 4 oz pike took home the lunker! It was great to see quality fish coming out of the lake. Several great browns came out, winner I believe was 9 pounds 4 oz. Last year the biggest brown came out of the inlet at 18in. Good to see stopping the walleye stocking is getting our trout to have a chance to grow! Specials Thanks to Jack at the South Shore Marina for putting together a great tournament year in and year out. Can't wait to get back at it next year. Hope the information helps!
  15. Is the race on Saturday or Sunday? Or both? Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  16. Another quick question do you try to match your color of spoon on the main line to the slider or cheater spoon? Or all dependant on conditions and time of year. Ever throw a flasher fly combo on main line then a clean spoon as a slider? It would seem like that would create a mess with a fish on the spoon in that scenario. Thank you again for all your expertise
  17. Thanks guys I appreciate the help. I guess my follow up question is when getting a hit on that slider. I imagine there is quite a bit of slack created from the line difference. Do you jut reel as fast as you can to pick up the slack? Any tips on keeping those fish buttoned up?
  18. Hey Guys, I see a lot of you guys use sliders and cheaters on your riggers. We only have two riggers on our 19ft boat and I usually stack two lines on each rigger when fishing below 40 ft. I usually separate the two depths by 15-20ft to avoid messy situations. I dont get a hell of a lot of hits on those stacked rods but the few fish we get have kept me putting them on. We are switching over to using copper and lead core this year so I cant be stacking since its just my Dad and I on the boat and limited to 6 poles. Sliders: I guess I'm not completely familiar with the set up (I started fishing the big pond after the three rod per person went into effect). I know this was a system created because of the two rod rule. Do you place your rigger down then slide a swivel with a 6ft leader to a spoon and let it freely slide down the line? How can you tell where the line is in the water? Do any of you use a rubber band on the main line to stop the slider from going all the way to the ball? Or do you attach the slider to the cable at your desired depth. Any information would be appreciated. I am going to play with options this weekend. Jimmy
  19. Had perfect weather Sunday with a slight West/NW wind and overcast until 9:30. Headed out of the chute at 6am set up our spread heading north until we found where the river/lake waterline. It was out 70fow. We only picked up a small Atlantic and water temp was 47 and colder. We picked up and headed east until we hit 50 fow and set up again. Water color and temp was much better over there (54 on top and 50 degrees 20-25 ft down. Marked some bait and a few fish on the screen but not much action. Had a couple of hits on the dipsey out 25 ft. Missed the first one and boated a nice 8lb brown, threw him back. Trolled almost to the plant not marking too much out there. The sun came out so we slid out to 60 fow and found a better screen but no takers. Bait was mostly on the bottom. Something hit the dispey hard and was gone before I could get to the rod, broke our 10lb leader line at the dispey. We mostly ran a spoon program and kept changing colors/patterns. 2-4 for the morning. We did see fish coming off the bottom look at our stuff and but no takers. Three hits were on a dark moonshine spoon all on dispeys. No side board hits. We will be back at it again next weekend. Didn't hear great reports when we came in. Did see some boats do really well with Lakers. Good luck out there!
  20. We will be headed out this weekend, hope the fishing picks up. We will post Saturday night of our results good luck out there better than sitting behind this computer. Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  21. Same patterns worked for us on Sat of last week. We noticed when we slid out to 25-35 fow we had more hits. Tiger, monkey puke, and smithwicks took our fish. When we slid out mostly lakers hit. Lakers weren't on the bottom, they were cruising throughout the water column. We went 8/10 mix of lakers, browns, and a mid teen king. Lakers were all 7-8 pound range, browns were smaller. Hope to get out this weekend. Thanks for the report! Sent from my iPhone using Lake Ontario United
  22. Great report! We'll be getting the boat wet for the first time this weekend! (weather permitting)
