I don't target steelhead but catch them best when I put spoons and flasher flys in 50 to 60 degrees. This time of the year that would be off shore. Latest DEC fishing report for lake Ontario- "Target staging kings at first light in around 100 feet of water with gear run in bottom half of water column, and slide deeper to 150-250 feet of water as day progresses. Trollers are also running well offshore for more stable waters of 400 feet plus for a solid mix of king salmon and steelhead". Run lures in top 100 feet. Trollers are catching brown trout in the nearshore zone at depths around 50-70 feet on medium spoons run near the bottom. Catch numbers improve the further you head east.
