Usually, it will say you have a message. And on the top right of the homepage, there is an envelope that you click on, which will show your recent messages. Then, click on that message, and it will take you to the message.

 

And I think the other image is a bell or something showing information like other posts on threads you posted on. And it will also show that you got a message from whoever.
