Looking for a 80 hp to 115 hp outboard with controls

2 or 4 stroke in good running condition

Henry

I have a 79-115 Mercury inline 6 tower of power that checks out with good compression. But it had a small miss when I first started trolling, but it would smooth out after a while. I had all 3 carbs rebuilt and a tune up, which didn't help. but cost the same, LOL. I put it back in the shop and spent another 288.00 that made it worse. I took it back, and this time he said it was running great. It was a couple of months before I tried it, and it idled great on the trailer with muffs and revved decent, but on the water, as soon as I put it in gear, it started dying. I was in FL fishing the bridge at FT Pierse. So, I used it by starting it and hitting the throttle to get out to our spot. When I got home and took it back, he said it had been too long for him to do anything about it, even though the weather was too bad to test it. But we made the trip to FL on the 1st of Jan and used it for a month to get out maybe 200 yards each way out and back to the ramp.

I ended up getting another boat with a good running motor, just like the one I have, and pulled the motor off and sold my old boat without a motor.

I think the mechanic didn't have any idea what he was doing, but one that know anything about these old Merc motors could repair it in no time. If you might be interested in it, if you want the controls and the power trim, I could maybe ship it to you complete for 1000.00. The old pumps sell for around 200.00 to 250.00, and a good lower unit will be another 350.00 or more. Plus, I'll refund 300.00 If it can't be repaired.

Message me either way, please.

Thanks for responding the80 Hp 3 cyl Merc motor I have on the boat starts every time, trolls fine and just about gets my 17 boat on plane

with the muffs on it revs right up, but when the boats in the water it doesn’t get past 3400 rpm

Parts I replaced

plugs

rebuilt fuel pump

spark distribution box

regulator (voltage was reading high)

new fuel lines

ran it off an external fuel tank

fuel filters

checked high and low speed stator circuits and voltages

Then I took it to Discount Marine in Port Byron, ( Highly Recommended)he had the boat for a week claimed he fixed it $425.00 later and it still runs exactly the same

so at this point I have a boat that starts every time I turn the key

idles and trolls fine just can’t get past 3400rpm

long story short I’m not looking for another motor to fix

Thanks for you reply

I"ve got a '96- 3 cyl. Merc on a 17 footer.. Got to ask, what diameter and pitch prop are you using??

I've run a 17 pitch and could over rev the motor... buddy of mine tried a 21 pitch and couldn't get the rpms up. Stock for my 90hp. is a 19 pitch. Changing from 3 blade to 4 blade can make a difference too.

Just my unprofessional $.02

I was fortunate enough to work with Dave at Propeller Works in Canadaigua and thru his effort to help out a total stranger I was able to try a variety of different pitch props as well as a 4 blade

RPM variance was negligible

the prop on the motor is

13 3/4 x 15 3 blade

i did not mention that the boat jumps up fine on a couple of occasions if in 2 to 3 foot waves I have gotten the boat to plane out by going with the waves that is the only time I have gotten more than 3400 rpm’s out of it

I was a bit miffed by not being able to vary the rpm’s with radical changes in prop pitch

About the only thing I have not done is rebuilding/cleaning the carbs, the so called expert I took the boat too swore that was not my issue

if you know of someone who is experienced in cleaning and rebuilding these carbs I would entertain going that route I have not found too many people who will even work on these old motors and let’s just say the ones I have found did not instill a lot of confidence in me

I appreciate your input

Thanks

Henry
