Once again we have had another week filled with strong winds and rain. Many area streams and rivers are high and muddy. Many area lakes are also higher than normal, which has resulted in boating advisories or bans. So, once again there is little new fishing activity to report this week.

Sections of the following area streams and lakes will have been stocked by Saturday, May 7th: Broome County - Arctic Lake, Finch Hollow Site 1 (Overbrook), Greenwood Lake, Little Choconut 2E, Nanticoke 7A, Palmers Pond, Patterson Pond(#1), Oquaga Creek, Chenango Lake, Dudley Creek, Nanticoke Creek, and East Branch Nanticoke Creeks; Cayuga County- North Brook, Fall Creek, Owasco Inlet, and Salmon Creek; Chenango County- Bowman Lake, Jeffrey Pond, Mill Brook Reservoir, Pharsalia Y Pond, Guilford Lake, Genegantslet Creek, and Otselic River; Cortland County- Casterline Pond, Little York Lake, and the Otselic River; Onondaga County- Skaneateles Lake. Fishing For Stream Trout

Wanted!! Angler Diary Cooperators for the Finger Lakes. Our numbers have dropped in recent years and we need new cooperators now more than ever. If you fish Cayuga, Owasco, Skaneateles, or Otisco Lakes and want to learn more about this program click on the link below or contact the Region 7 Fisheries office at (607) 753-3095 ext. 213.

Angler Diary Cooperator Program and Reports

Region 7

Lake Ontario

The near-shore brown trout fishing continues to be very good on those rare days the wind isn't blowing and anglers can actually get out. Trolling with stickbaits near shore along mud-lines (areas of warmer turbid water from tributaries) in 6 to 20 feet of water is producing some nice brown trout, an occasional Atlantic salmon, and some small Chinook and coho salmon. Stickbaits in black &silver and fire tiger, fished off planer boards has been working well.

Oswego River

The river is really up and running at 25,700 cubic feet per second (cfs) as of 5/06. This flow makes the river unfishable.

Salmon River

The river has dropped and is currently at 1,200 cfs as of 5/06. There are still steelhead being caught, mainly drop-backs (fish that have spawned and are heading back to the lake).

Oneida Lake

Due to high water levels, Oswego County Sheriffs have banned ALL boat traffic on Oneida Lake, except for emergency response vehicles. This advisory was put into effect on May 4th. Anglers can still fish from shore.

Cayuga Lake

Tompkins County sheriffs have issued a boating advisory for Cayuga Lake, the Inlet is a No Wake Zone and there is also a NO Wake Zone within 1,000 feet of any Cayuga Lake shoreline.

Skaneateles Lake

The launch ramp has been open and the docks are in place.

Owasco Lake

Anglers fishing the north end are catching some yellow perch on minnows. No information on smelt running.

Otisco Lake

No new fishing activity to report, as few anglers have been out.

Whitney Point Reservoir

The reservoir is very high and muddy due to recent rain events making getting a boat out and fishing extremely difficult.

Sandy Pond

Some yellow perch are being taken on small minnows.

Susquehanna, Chenango, Tioughnioga and Unadilla Rivers

The rivers are all high and muddy making fishing very difficult.

Eastern Region 8

A few sections of the following area streams and lakes will have been stocked by Saturday May 7th: Chemung County- Elbridge Lake, Park Station pond, Cayuta Creek, Wyncoop Creek, Post Creek, Sing Sing Creek, and Newton Creek; Schuyler County-Potomac Pond, Foster Pond, Ballard Pond and Cayuta Creek; Steuben County- Dansville Reservoir, Canaseraga Creek, Bennett Creek, Post Creek, Cohocton River, Canisteo River and Meads Creek; Yates County- Keuka Lake Outlet.

Lake Ontario

Anglers trolling along the mud-lines (where clear lake water meets the warmer/turbid water from tributaries) with stickbaits or spoons fished off planer boards are catching some nice brown trout. Anglers fishing early with orange and black spoons or stickbaits are having better luck. As the sun gets higher the fishing slows down. Anglers casting spoons off the Webster Pier are also getting brown trout.

Sodus Bay

Yellow perch are being taken in bay on small minnows. Black crappies are being taken by the bridge. Bullhead fishing has started and nightcrawlers have been working well.

Seneca Lake

The lake has risen with recent rains and there is debris floating around on the lake so use caution. Many of the launch ramps are under water making launching difficult.

Irondequoit Bay

Yellow perch are being taken on minnows north of the bridge.

Canandaigua Lake

The lake has risen with recent rains and there is debris floating around on the lake so use caution. Yellow perch and black crappies are being caught on the north end with small jigs and minnows fished under floats.

Keuka Lake

The lake has risen with recent rains and there is debris floating around on the lake so use caution. Lake trout are being taken by anglers trolling Spin Dr.'s and flies off downriggers, and with spoons fished off Dipseys and wire. Vertical jigging with plastics in 140 to 180 feet of water is also working well for lake trout.

Waneta and Lamoka Lakes

Bullhead fishing has picked up over the last few days with night crawlers working well. Yellow perch fishing has been spotty, good days and bad days. When fish are hitting, small minnows and jigs are working. Crappie fishing has been slow but should start to pick up with the warmer weather.
