  1. I hope to be out Sunday. I will be on channel 68! Wes
  2. That video on youtube was " wire line test with Capt Bill" science is boring to watch but the results are interesting. Wes
  3. I watched a you tube video on different wire breaking strength. They tested about 5 brands of wire and they were all 30 lb test. They did three test on each wire and then averaged. The brand mentioned had some break at 20 lbs. The brand that I use broke over 30lb for 7 strand and the 19 strand was a little higher. I do not remember all the numbers but it might be worth looking up on you tube. What kind of lures do you run at that speed? Years ago I fast trolled rebel fasttracs but I do not think they make them anymore! Wes
  4. Impressive list. Some of the best anglers in the northeast! I like this format. Should be a blast! Any newbies should join in. A great time to ask questions. You will have people who fish many different ways. I might try some new methods myself! Wes
  5. Looks like that will be in late November the way these temps are! Wes
  6. Bobber, See at weigh in. Have not seen Kade in a long time! Wes
  7. Do they have a lot of room to park our rigs?
  8. I have 150 Merc and 9.9. Honda Blue top and lots of rods. That is what gets me in trouble!
  9. Lets all keep our radios on channel 68. I will be running 600' copper so I need room but I am more than willing to slide deep if we come head to head. Just hail me on the radio. I was fishing last week and had a bad tangle, looked up and I was heading right for another boat. Tried to hail him but no answer. It was my fault and I feel bad. It's o.k. to say hey white Bayliner trophy do you see me? We have all done it I'm sure. Lets have fun and keep it safe. Wes
  10. Mike, Hope all is well. Quality Time is in! Wes
  11. I've got lakers as deep as 250' I do not remember the amount of blowback but what we did was drop the rigger till it touched bottom. I'm thinking it was about 300' of cable out but that was in the spring when we run 10lb test. With flea line on the blow back would be much more. So you would think you would pull monsters out of the deep but all we got were 3 and 4 lbers. Remember the water is always moving and the fish often move with it. You have the right idea of moving until you find fish. I have a tee shirt that says "the secret to fishing is fish where the fish are". I also like to watch the water quality buoy data on Seneca and Owasco. It can give you a rough idea what is going on in Cayuga. Temp breaks and oxygen levels are often key to finding fish but fish do not read the same books we read. We did a grand slam one day with the smallest fish being 6 lbs. The water was 70 deg for all the fish but the laker. THis challenge is what makes it fun! Wes
  12. I'm going to start by saying I have been trolling Cayuga Lake since 1980. In those days my catch was around 40% percent rainbows. We would get smelt by the pails full in the spring with tons of bait for the fish to eat. Introduce Zebra mussels, spiny water fleas, quagga mussels and now gobies and the rainbows have all but gone. If you are in the angler diary program you would see that stocking of Rainbow trout was nearly as high as lake trout but rainbows only made up over the last few years less than 2% of the catch. The last survey they made up 4% so the DEC efforts are improving the Rainbow fishery. The problem I see is that this is at a cost to the Lake Trout. The Lake trout is the native fish to the lake and they do well in the lake for a good reason. Everyone wants glamour fish and for some reason the laker does not get much credit. These fish have been in the lake since the last ice age. For the last 15 years we did not target rainbows and always released them when we could. My point is that we have a wonderful lake trout fishery even with all the invasive. If the fisherman keep screaming for more rainbows and the DEC keeps reducing Laker numbers we will be fishing in a lake with fewer and fewer fish in the boat. The Rainbow numbers are increasing and you should be happy when you get one but don't expect to get them on every trip. Wes
  13. I've seen fish like that . It had eaten a plastic jig and could not pass it. Wes
  14. Nice fish Greenboat! always fun when you double up. Tangles are a pain but part of the game. Are you running the copper down the chute? You might try it on a board. A wild fish might still get you tangled. Wes
  15. Well its good it's not a shorted cell. Often shorted cells happen in the winter when a battery has low charge and it freezes.
  16. Fully charged you should be over 13 volts. When charging it would be over 14 volts. You might have a shorted cell. or bad connection in the battery switch. The best way to check the battery is take it to a shop that has a load tester. Wes
  17. Stab, lift. Should take a half a second. pull net towards you to close bag. Lift handle up and grab net hoop to help support weight. Never lift fish with handle horizontal. It will bend the handle. I would never slow the boat down unless you are getting spooled. Forward momentum helps keep the fish in control ( Some what) You can not second guess yourself. Wait for the right moment and commit. Practice this with any type of fish you go for even small fish. It will become second nature after you net a few thousand fish Wes
  18. I've caught lakers as deep as 250' on the finger lakes. That was not 250' of line out it was drop the rigger until it touched bottom in 250' of water. Over 300' of cable out and we had to slow way down. The funny thing was many of the fish we got were small! Wes
  19. I was out that day as well. We were on the south end. We put up the curtains up and stayed out. I got the brother to your salmon. We got a bunch of small salmon even though I was using bigger spoons. Only one laker. Marked lots of bait. I was hoping to do catch and release that day but the big salmon had a huge lamprey on him. The hole in his side was bad so that fish ended up on the grill! It was a very interesting cloud formation. The best one was around 8:30pm. Wes
  20. The biggest thing with lakers is taking good care of the meat. If you have more ice in your beer cooler than on your fish you are doing it wrong. Keep them as cold as possible and eat them as soon as you can. I never freeze lakers. I tried to gut and gill a few trips ago but the fishing was so good with rods firing none stop I only did half the fish I kept. I try to only keep gill hooked fish so most of them bleed out anyhow. The meat did seem firmer and whiter. I kept a small pail inside my cooler to put the guts in. I like lemon garlic like mentioned cooked on grill with maple or apple wood for smoke. I use the side car of my smoker grill for most of the heat and smoke. Thanks Ed! I will give your method a try! Wes
  21. We should be only stocking native fish. The lake trout do well in the fingers because of deep cold water. If you want walleyes you should scrap the Pacific Salmon program in Lake Ontario and stock Landlocks, Walleye, Whitefish and Lake Trout. These are the fish that filled the lakes before early settlers screwed it all up. Certain fish do well in certain lakes for a reason. The lake Trout have provided a fantastic fishery in the Finger Lakes for many years. Everybody wants Rainbows or walleye. Rainbows need clean silt free streams to spawn and Walleyes need 40' deep water. The bigger finger lakes do not have this. Instead of wasting our money on stocking fish will not do well just leave the Lake Trout alone. If you want Walleyes go to Erie or Oneida.
  22. I have been having good luck with UV purple or white with green dot spinnys. Wes
  23. 250 years worth of outdoormen on Cayuga Take a kid fishing! No cell phones in hand on this trip! Age of crew,93,80,58,and 13. We had a steady pick all morning. I had a hard time getting enough time to eat a sandwich. We boated about 15 lakers many in the 6 to 8lb range. everybody landed fish but most were reeled in by 13 year old Jake. He did a great job and we were teaching him rod control and by the end of the day he was guiding the lakers between all the lines like a pro. We fished 90' to 195' FOW . Most fish were 90'to120' down. only 2 fish on 500' copper. Ben's memorial fly " Quality Time" caught the most and biggest fish. You can get this fly from Iron Duke Trolling Fly's and I always have this fly down in memory of my boy, Iron Duke has many other colors that are as good or better. This fly has purple in it and my spoon and paddles on wire were purple as well. Spread the joy of fishing
  24. North end. Very little sign on fish finder, no bait at all but still found some hungry ones. Wes
