  1. In case you haven't been following. Shipping companies challanged the "ballast dumping" rules that NY added to the EPA regulations for the Great Lakes last year. A NY Court dismissed their challange today. Hopefully this will be a poitive step toward preventing more invassives in Big-O. IE Freighters have to get a permit to dump anything. http://legalnewsline.com/news/221304-ch ... denied8207 Tom B. (LongLine)
  2. Mark Should I tell them Reeljerks sent me? Tom B. (LongLine)
  3. WTG. Food & Fish...you've got fishing partners for life. Tom B (LongLine)
  4. Junk lines refer to stuff that you get from the scrap yard AKA the "junk yard." I.E. metal. They include Wires, lead cores, copper lines. Lots of threads on them. Suggest you do some searches on previous threads. Good luck, Tom B. (LongLine)
  5. Spoons roll over every once in a while so a swivel is a must, somewhere in your line. Easiest to go with is a combination snap-swivel right at the spoon. Some guys will tie a spoon direct or have only a snap but then have a swivel up 6 ft or so from it. If you tie a tight knot like a palomar or clinch on the hole in the spoon, it will damper the action considerably. As far as rings go, some guys fish the lure just as it comes out of the package, others put a split ring on everything. That's really a matter of your experience, how you fish, etc. What I'd suggest is that if you have one of those "hot" color ones and it's not producing for you then put a ring on it and try it. (or vice versa) Good luck, Tom B. (LongLine)
  6. I believe a small boat is better off using boards than inlines, especially if fishing solo. Reason is simply the board can stay out in the water when you have a fish on. Inlines have to be unclipped and you have other things to worry about besides clearing the inline. Tom B. (LongLine)
  7. Tabu - 1st - Welcome to the site. 2nd - 99.5% of Big-O trollers do not use a steel leader. That's more for Northern or Musky fishing. Although you occassionally do get a bite off in the fall, bite-offs are pretty rare most of the year. Snap swivels or just snaps are the norm. Tom B. (LongLine)
  8. Try to locate an industrial supply house in Syracuse, in the yellow pages. (I know they have them there just like they have them in Rochester) The 150 Lb cable is 0.031" diameter. Ask for stainless stranded cable in the 0.020 to 0.025" range. You can also get it through the McMaster catalog. Tom B. (LongLine)
  9. 1st: Is your release above the probe? 2nd: Does the same thing happen no matter which direction you're trolling? 2nd A : Make sure your cable has enough weight on it. If blowback is too great the unit will tip and you won't get a good speed reading. 3rd: What brand of battery are you using? Some batteries don't work worth a cr@p after they get too cold. 4th: Call Moor. Tom B. (LongLine)
  10. Definitely the catch of the weekend. Congratulations. (& to mama too) Tom B. (LongLine)
  11. The only time at the Genny when it's not calmer in the morning is when we are into a "three day blow." These only happen roughly 3 times a year and there always from the west. I.E. constant 3 or 4 footers. Otherwise, from Mid-May through mid-Sept, it's definitely calmer in the morning. The wind usually picks up or shifts (if it's going to) around 10 or so. The summer winds generally calm down around 5-6 PM but then any residual swells need time to smooth out. If you look at a chart, you'll see that Big O aligns with the prevailing westerlys and that Rochester is in a slight cove. I.E. fairly calm water when wind is from the S, SW or west. The only time Rochester really gets hammered is when the wind is directlly out of the N or NE. Tom B. (LongLine)
  12. The kids will remember that trip for the rest of their lives. After you get back & the "I missed you dad"s are over, you know they'll ask you to take them out again. Stay safe. Tom B. (LongLine)
  13. Good day off the Genny. How far back on the riggers? Tom B. (LongLine)
  14. I may be repeating what's already been said but I think there are two main inputs for the patrol group on this issue. Unfortunately it’s the times we now live in. We all want the bad guy caught before he can do any harm. “However, I’m not the terrorist so don’t infringe on my US citizenship freedoms, especially on Saturday morning when I’m fishing.†The second input is from the intelligence dept of the security group charged with border protection. The dept that trains & issues the internal memos to the patrolling groups. Albeit, they probably don’t know the first thing about recreational Fishing, this dept knows that worldwide fishing boats have attacked freighters, speed boats have attacked warships and that blow boats have been caught smuggling aliens & drugs. They know we have a network & that many of us have “rocket launchers†mounted on our boats. They know we sometimes speak in codes. IE “20 down & 80 backâ€; “out 200 on a 2 ½ settingâ€; purple spooks working on 28 lineâ€. They know we frequent the “Blue zone†and that some of us go to Canadian waters & back. The actions of the patrol group is what the general populace sees. They have to balance the inputs & generate appropriate actions. As they gain experience, I’m sure their actions will be “toned down†a bit (in our eyes) and more appropriate for the situation. OJT will teach them how to safely approach a troller. At least they came in from the side. Until the OJT is complete, mistakes will be made & some of us will “pay the price.†Personally, I wouldn’t want their jobs. I’m glad they’re out there and that the word is spreading that they are out there. (Of course, I’m disregarding the notion that some patrolling individuals may be power-hungry ignorant morons that shouldn’t even be school crossing guards. At least until they cause a ruckus on one of my outings.) Tom B. (LongLine)
  15. Dave Obviously what you do is don't hit the spool release. What I do is loosen the drag as far as it'll go then turn the boat in a circle & head the other way. 90% of the time the lure will come loose when you about even with it and you can reel it back in. Remember if you free-up a snag, to cut off a bunch of the line as it's probably all stretched out. Sounds like you have a cutting job to do. Use toe-nail clippers. Tom B. (LongLine)
  16. Happy Birthday 'wacker Tom B. (LongLine)
  17. Great job Linda & Skip. Hope everyone is okay. Tom B. (LongLine)
  18. At about 140 FOW, ran into some Kalifornyah Salmon: (just playing stan) It’s very exciting & just love it when you see this on the screen: Unfortunately that monster wasn’t fast enough as this guy took it: All in all, a great day. 11 for 11 (solo) All fish clean – No lamprey wounds. These did the damage: Not very good with the new camera yet, guess I'll have to practice some more. Tom B. (LongLine)
  19. Launched at the river again, about 5:00. Went solo this time. Went straight out to 120 FOW. Heavy clouds. Very slight ENE wind. Saw temp breaks about 60 & at 90FOW. Put on the purple freebie that JV’s gave me for telling them that Reeljerks sent me. (Don’t feel bad Mark, I won a $25 scratch off ticket so they were all free) and set it down 27 ft & about 40 back. Within a couple minutes I had this guy: (DW SS Bloody Death) Bow: Putted around for about an hour then put an NK28 Purple Spook on the other rigger & dropped it to 34 down, back about 60. Was over 130 FOW when the DW fired. Had it on for about 10 minutes then the spook fired. Landed the first one but treble got stuck in the net so I threw the whole thing between the seats and grabbed the other rod. Luckily he was still there. Got him to the boat but had to tail him. My first decent king double as a soloist in a long time. 16 & just shy of 20#. Took a while for my knees to stop shaking. Did some backtracking & got this little guy: Thinking that maybe the big ones moved a little deeper, I decided to head out a bit. And then… To be continued
  20. You got some "purdy" lakes out there stan. Is that a bull or Mac? (My eyes shot) Tom B. (LongLine)
  21. Ive been using a $10 LED windup flashlight called the "illuminator." Works great. Tom B. (LongLine)
  22. Boards are the last thing I setup. With the port side board out where I want it, I count out my line for the drop back, then I put that rod in a port side rod holder & make sure the boat is going straight. (I use Laurick release.) I then make a slight curve to port so the board drops back towards the wake just a little. IE going slower than the boat. I attach the line/release & the drag of the lure pulls the release right down to the board where I want it. Line from the rod is let out with no tension from the reel & not allowed to touch the water, with rod held high. I don’t use a mast. My board line is the standard stuff and is attached to my window frame. I only go out 40-45 ft though as I don't want any "combat" type problems. Tom B. (LongLine)
  23. Stopped in after work. Bought a few of the SS. Mentioned that RELJERKS sent me & he gave me a freebie. Thanx Mark. Tom B. (LongLine)
